"Things are going as well as can be expected, but treatments are going to take a while, as they told you." Kyuuki's feathery voice was trying to be reassuring as she spoke to the Jr. Weyrwoman. "Do you need something from her? I can, um, ask after the current round is done."
"No." Hedara's response was immediate and firm, making the lifewing rider flinch in response. The Icerider was standing tall with her arms crossed, looking slightly down on the old woman. Her clothes were practical but neat and her hair was tied back again. Her eyes looked back behind the lifewing rider for a moment before speaking again. "I just wanted to know what the progress was. I can leave now." She turned to go, but paused when a pale hand touched her shoulder. She turned back to look at Kyuuki, who always looked like a little white bird about to fly away. In her mind anyway.
"I wonder if you would like me to come and give you reports each day. It would save you a walk. Then I could tell you what days she's feeling good enough for guests." Her hand flew back as she spoke, making her look skittish again. Hedara looked at the white haired woman thoroughly for a moment. She had somewhat gotten to know the lifewing riders and healers that were helping Sanshe, but this one had often been around, though not at the center. It was rather odd in her mind. She didn't have anything against Kyuuki, as she seemed competent and was helping with Sanshe, but she wondered if she was coming off poorly.
"I am happy for the exercise. Do not trouble yourself." Hedara's words were a touch dismissive, something she seemed to do often.
A quiet 'tsk' resounded in Hedara's head, and it was the only preamble Temperanth gave before giving advice. She's a little nervous. Remember to be polite, it always makes you come off better.
Hedara took a breath, looking a little tired. She thought she WAS being polite. "However if you are annoyed by my constant interruptions then I suppose..." A louder 'TSK' pierced her head and she cleared her throat. "What I mean is, you and the rest of the healers have been quite kind. I do not wish to bother you much, so whichever arrangement is least imposing." There was no interruption in her head so it seemed as though her dragoness was pleased with that phrasing.
Kyuuki stared at Hedara for a time then broke into a warm smile. The older woman looked much more confident when she smiled. "Well, if you don't mind then I can come by to keep you informed. It will, um, be a while before real progress but I will try to be thorough. Uh, that is if you need it."
"That will be fine. I shall expect you tomorrow then." Hedara watched Kyuuki nod quickly, then turned to go. Hedara was not used to those like Kyuuki, since most often she dealt with those who were just as stubborn as northerners were expected to be. She knew that Ice Stone Weyr had been built with transfers from Rainbow Mists Weyr, but from the old woman's appearance she would not have guessed she had been a southern born folk. She dismissed idle thoughts and proceeded back to the Weyr Bowl, being interrupted by a firelizard appearing before her. The green flitter chirped to announce its presence, and hovered in front of Hedara for a moment. "There you are Ivy. Come." The woman started up again, the green giving a croon before following her. The flitter was always happy around Hedara, and very friendly. It certainly was a sharp contrast to the Jr. Weyrwoman.
Eventually Hedara found herself at the WeyrBowl, and she paused. Ivy took the stop in stride, orbiting the blond woman easily with a few happy chirps. Hedara looked at the dragons coming in an out of the Bowl critically. This was not her real destination but as of late she had found herself stopping to watch the mood of the riders here. Emotions had been building up here, and it was falling on her for the time being. Therefore it was her responsibility to get a feel for how things were in the Weyr. It was important with the 'unnatural pairs' argument coming up more and more. Temperanth agreed of course, though tried to encourage more of getting in the midst of things. If one did not get more involved, how could they really know what was going on? Still for the time being, the Icerider watch the dragons move in and out, and hoped for Sanshe's quick recovery.

Guyaky chirped twice as he landed on Tamaruk’s shoulder. Absently, the thin boy reached up and rubbed the Aurora flitt’s head. He was standing, or rather, hiding, in a sheltered alcove on one side of the WeyrBowl. He quickly glanced down at Sinok, in a nervous habit of making sure that the black sled-canine was still present, before raising his eyes slightly to look, through the screen made by his ear-lobe length black hair, across the Bowl once more. He always loved coming here, to watch the dragons landing and taking off into the sky; it was a constant reminder that he was no longer living at the Hold, although he was still frequently quick to vanish if someone approached.
A flicker of something green at the far side of the Bowl caught his attention and he looked over at it. His gaze landed on a tall woma… lady, who was standing at the far side of the Bowl with a Green flitt flying in circles around her head. Her blonde hair was pulled back and quite long, which was all he noticed before immediately looking down and drawing back somewhat, so that he was half hidden by the shadows.

Hedara continued looking at those coming in and out of the Weyrbowl, her eyes scanning critically. As such she did not notice Ivy pausing from her orbits to peer at the side of the weyrbowl. The green flitter often took the chance to peer at those wandering about the Bowl, and once in a while used the time to get a better look at some of the people of the Weyr. For the time being, the green was looking at a lad who was doing his best to keep out of the way. A canine and Aurora Firelizard were hanging about him and this fact seemed to interest Ivy. The green flew over lazily, unnoticed by Hedara. The blond woman was watching a dream rider and a blue rider in something of a heated conversation, and was trying to make out what it was about. It looked as though whatever passionate conversation they were in was not against the other, but more of a sharing of opinions that they felt strongly about. Hedara had a fair guess as to what the subject was. However, she continued watching, just in case.
Ivy continued on her trajectory, not worried about hers noticing where she had gone. She glided over to the boy and hovered before him, a few feet away. The green firelizard looked at him more closely, tilting her head and such but not moving closer. She looked at the Aurora and black canine as well, intensely curious about them. She spent some time looking at all of them before letting out a series of happy chirps, and gliding forward. Once she had gotten a little closer she stopped and crooned, hovering a foot in front of them. Ivy loved people, and it was fairly obvious that her actions were a way of introduction. The green flitter did this a fair amount, sometimes while Hedara was around and sometimes not. Still, Ivy tended to be well behaved so most didn't get annoyed with her.

Guyaky nudged His, watching the strange green approach through one slowly orbiting, blue-green eye. He was essentially relaxed, for His had been seen here without trouble, making it a safe spot as far as the young Aurora was concerned.
Tamaruk reached up to rub Guyaky’s head, but then a series of chirps sounded from in front of him, only a few feet away, and he flinched back, pulling his shoulders up as though to shield, his hand tightening down on Guyaky. A split second later, he realized that the chirps were a greeting, and after a couple deep breaths, he flicked his gaze forward to see the flitt come to a stop about a foot in front of him, crooning. Glancing around quickly to make sure that no one was watching, Tamaruk slowly raised his hand, extending it palm upwards towards the friendly Green.
“Wonder what your name is,” Tamaruk said quietly, subconsciously echoing the meaning of Guyaky’s greeting chirp. He smiled as the words left his mouth, for he could hear the swishing noise that meant that Sinok had started wagging his tail, obviously having decided, like the young boy who was His, that there was little enough danger to be had here.

Ivy tilted her head when the boy gave a quick reaction to her chirps. He recovered quickly though, so the green assumed that he had been startled. She hovered closer when his hand was offered to her and she got close enough to rub her head against his palm. As she did so she crooned softly, very content. She stopped after a few seconds, and regarded the Aurora firelizard. Ivy chirped a greeting to him, and then rubbed against the boy's palm with her head again. They way she did so seemed to indicate that she was telling the Aurora that he had a very nice master. She didn't stop to continue with that though, as the wagging tail of the black canine caught her eye. She moved in front of the canine and chirped pleasantly. Ivy loved nearly everyone, and it was fairly obvious she was a green flitter solely on personality. After her greeting to the canine personally she moved to try and balance on the canine's head, though she ended up just rubbing her head against his fur. These were such nice people.
Hedara continued watching the pair of riders as they talked. The conversation seemed to change subjects, for one reason or another, and both riders were more casual. The Jr. Weyrwoman watched for a little longer to see if the detour in conversation was temporary, but that did not appear to be the case. With a slight nod to herself Hedara gave another look over the Weyr Bowl, and only then did she look slightly up. Ivy had gone off somewhere. She looked around the immediate area, not spying the green in a corner or such near her. The thought occurred to her that she could just leave Ivy to whatever it was that she had run off to do, but she rejected it quickly. As much as it did not appear the case, Hedara liked it when the green was around her. The woman's face didn't change from the straight look she had during her time hanging out at the Weyr Bowl, even as she thought. Instead her eyes betrayed that she was thinking, then changed to a searching gaze. She checked the Weyr Bowl again, finally spotting the green moving about in a out of the way corner. Hedara started walking that direction to retrieve the firelizard, though she continued looking at the other riders proceed in and out as she did so. It looked like things were tense at times, yet others it was just like there was nothing anyone was worried about. It was just so hard to tell.

Sinok tried to lick the Green flitt as she hovered in front of him, but missed, owing to the fact that she was trying to land on his head. He wasn’t perturbed by the attempt, for Guyaky often perched there, and the rubbing action on his head was good.
Tamaruk smiled as the flitt rubbed her head against his hand. When she moved to try and say hello to Sinok, nearly getting licked, he couldn’t stop the smile broadening into a grin. The muscles of his face still felt weird when he did so; he’d smiled only a handful of times in eleven turns, and had grinned even less, and almost all of those times were in the two months since he’d arrived at the Weyr. The sound of steadily approaching footsteps quickly ended his smile. The sound of those footsteps, the pattern of their cadence against the ground, told Tamaruk many things about the approaching person, not least of which was that he or she was someone used to authority. He started to pull away from the opening of his hiding place, feeling Guyaky slip into hiding along his back, but before he could take more than a step the approaching person reached him.
Tamaruk risked a quick glance upward, though he kept his eyes beneath the level of the newcomer’s mid-torso. Swallowing, he knelt, pushing Sinok back as he did so. It was the same lady he’d seen earlier on the far side of the WeyrBowl. She must be looking for the Green flitt, he thought, his back and shoulders tightening as he pulled in on himself. He didn’t speak, for speaking without being spoken to first was, as he knew from the Hold, a very serious behavioral breach, but he couldn’t stop the shudder that ran down his back. I wasn't doing anything! his thoughts cried, but that was, he knew well, no real defense.

When the boy stepped back it caught both the attention of Ivy and Hedara. The firelizard flew closer to the boy and chirped, tilting her head. Why was he frightened? Was he playing? The firelizard's eyes indicated she was anxious, until she heard the foot falls stop behind her. Ivy turned to look and chirped loudly with excitement. Hedara stopped in front of the party, crossing her arms as she came to a rest. The green shot to the rider, circling in quick loops around her before hovering in front of the woman's face. Hedara extended her hand casually, which the green seemed to immediately pounce on. Quicker then the blink of an eye, Ivy was wrapped around the woman's arm, much like her namesake. A croon could be heard from the happy flitter, eliciting a cocked eyebrow from Hedara.
"Not so tight Ivy." Hedara's voice was a flat statement, but she seemed to have the hint of a smile in her eyes, even if her mouth didn't move. The green crooned again and seemed to loosen up, but remained around the woman's arm. Hedara nodded to herself, before turning her gaze to the trio in the alcove. She did not quite to what to make of this, as he didn't seem to be playing a game here. It looked like he expected trouble, and that made Hedara suspicious. She reviewed the canine for a moment, not taking notice of the Aurora flitter from his hiding place. Odd. She took a quick look around the area, not seeing anyone who she could presume he was with. After completing her survey she trained her gaze back to the boy himself and spoke clearly, "What are you doing there?"

Tamaruk remained so still that he might as well have been carved from the same stone as the hallway. Sinok whined briefly, but Tamaruk ignored it, even as he had ignored the flitt’s last friendly approach; the lady had not given permission for him to move. He hoped that the lady, having found her flitt, would be satisfied with his display of subservience and withdraw, but when she returned her gaze to him, he knew that was not to be.
“I… I was just watching the dragons, Lady,” he said, hardly more than whispering, in answer to the lady’s question. She hadn’t said anything about catching him socializing with her flitt, so he cautiously decided to try preemptively explaining what happened.
“I didn’t know the flitt was yours,” he continued diffidently, hoping she wouldn't object to his boldness in continuing to speak. “She came up to me while I was watching, and Harper Gi… er, the Harper said that you should be friendly when a flitt decides to come over.” He caught himself before he revealed Gillian’s name, not wanting to get the Harper in trouble if the lady disagreed. Having finished, he remained where he was, still kneeling, with his head ducked and his eyes down.

Hedara watched the boy speak and frowned slightly at his quiet tone. His voice was just on the range of conversational volume, but she disliked when people were too quiet in responses. She was about to speak but as he continued speaking she waited. When he spoke about Ivy, she raised her eye brow again and looked thoughtful. That was what he was worried about? That she was going to be mad that he was friendly toward her firelizard? She took a fresh look at him, trying to figure out who he was. She was guessing that he was new around the Weyr, since he wasn't familiar with the flitter's habits. She could well be wrong but it seemed that way to her. From his appearance he could be southern born, so perhaps he was a candidate from the south? He could be a child of one of the riders that transferred here, but she could not say. Her hazel eyes were locked on the boy as she thought, but she shook her head, chasing assumptions away as she started to speak.
"Remember to speak up when I ask you a question. Answers are no good given when I cannot hear them." She rested the arm Ivy was clinging to on her other arm, holding her elbow to steady it. The green had enough room to wriggle away if she pleased this way. "However, if it is greeting Ivy that has you worried here, be at ease. I would not begrudge her nature, nor you for being kind. I would advise that you not look so suspicious, though. One could construe that you were up to trouble. Staying out of the way is one thing, but this is another. Take care that you remember this." Hedara's words could be construed as intimidating, since her face was looking down on him and she looked a touch arrogant. She honestly didn't mean it, it was just how she looked most times.
"In any event, I wish to know, are you new to Ice Stone?" Hedara looked a little more formal at that, it seemed she did it unconsciously as well. The Jr. Weyrwoman had a presence that would override her less formal clothing. Sanshe had mentioned how she liked that about her. Hedara would not have said much else but a restless feeling in the back of her head made Hedara look down and to the right. Temperanth?
Are you meeting a candidate? I am in the mood to be about. The Ice dragoness stretched from her position, having been relaxing after her nap. She had been up for a while, obviously, but finally felt like doing something. I can be there in a minute.
I do not know if he is a candidate. Hedara looked up again and asked, "Are you a candidate here?" She had hardly got the words out of her mouth when Temperanth scoffed.
It matters little. I shall be there in a little bit. I want to stretch my wings and where ever you are is my destination. Getting you to meet someone new is just a bonus. Hedara frowned a little but loosed up quickly. It wasn't worth troubling herself over. The Ice lazily got up and started to glide to the Weyrbowl, but wouldn't be there for a minute or so.

Tamaruk winced slightly at the tone of the lady's first words. He pulled in on himself, his shoulders coming up and forward, at least as much as was possible, given that he was still kneeling. Then the lady said that she wasn't upset about his interacting with her flitt. His eyes widened in surprise, and a cautious hope stirred in his breast.
Please, he thought, just this once, let me not get in trouble. He wasn't feeling hopeful enough, however, to stand up. Then the lady asked him a question, replacing hope with a desperate fear; what if his answer wasn't the right one? For a heart-stopping moment he hung suspended between possibilities, then memories surfaced, reminding him of the consequences of remaining silent when directly questioned.
"Ye... Umm... I mean... Uh... I don't know if you'd say I'm new here or not, Lady. I got here about two months ago." He tried to speak louder, but with each word he said he became increasingly convinced that someone would show up and get mad at him for making so much noise. Towards the end of his answer, he was rushing through the words, so that he ended short of breath and forcing himself not to gasp for air. He quickly glanced up as he finished, trying to assess whether he'd done the right thing in answering as he had.

Hedara tried not to frown as she watched his reactions. Too skittish. She tried not to let that get to her, and simply tried to organize her thoughts. It wasn't hard, she fell naturally to that kind of thing. She gave a spare glance at Ivy while he spoke, who had turned her head to the boy as he spoke. The green loved anyone she met once, and seemed to be a good listener at times. Not that she understood words but she was good with seeing how people felt. Hedara could tell the flitter was curious about the boy's state. Why was he so spooked? The rider turned her gaze back on him then paused for a moment while she looked him over again.
"It is new enough. Tell me, were you searched for the hatching, or did you arrive afterward?" Her words had taken a slightly more relaxed feel to them, but not by much. She was under the assumption that the boy was a candidate that had missed the hatching, or something like that. Not that she would have recognized a candidate from the hatching if he hadn't impressed.
Tell me, did you ever get this lad's name? Temperanth was drawing near but had not reached the Bowl. It always seemed like the dragoness was right next to Hedara, even when it was not true. Hedara didn't say anything immediately, a bit of curiosity seeping into their bond. Temperanth was quick to pick up on its meaning. I wish to introduce myself personally. Hedara understood quickly. The Ice was fairly forward with people, not often resorting to playing telephone by way of Hedara. The woman often wondered if it was because she didn't feel that Hedara would convey the message properly, but as far as she could tell it wasn't. It didn't stop her from thinking that way though.
"Ah, I forgot to ask, what to you call yourself?" A brief pause between sentences occurred, though not enough for the Ice to get in another 'tsk'. "I am Hedara Lune."

Tamaruk swallowed his sudden curiosity and confusion. What was it with these people here, that they seemed determined to ask about things that, he’d been told extremely frequently, did not matter. For all that confusion, he still spoke quickly, unwilling to offend the lady with insolence.
“Tamaruk, Lady,” he answered, still keeping his eyes pretty much fixed on the ground, though he dared a quick glance up through his rough-cut bangs.

Hedara noted the name, getting a look at him so she remembered. She had never had a particular compulsion to know everyone's name before impressing Temperanth. After she did, she found that practically speaking, being good with names and faces could make things much, much more convenient. It took Temperanth to remind her of that sometimes. She didn't really know if knowing this particular boy was going to be that important, but if he was a candidate, then who knew how much she would care about it later. Best be safe.
Temperanth finally make it to the Weyrbowl, taking a arc to slowly get to the point where she wanted to land. The Ice Queen stood for a moment, looking to some of the other dragons in the Bowl first. It seemed like they were continuing with their own affairs, so she casually walked over to Hedara. She paused for a moment, a familiar green blur taking leave of the Jr Weyrwoman's arm in a rush and speeding right to the Ice's snout. Temperanth extended her head slightly, touching noses with Ivy, before the flitter flew to the dragoness' back and curled up there, crooning. Ivy really did love everybody. Temperanth had figured that a flitter might do hers well, and she couldn't have asked better then the little green. The dragoness continued forward as Hedara naturally took a step to the side and glanced up at Temperanth.
"His name is Tamaruk." Hedara said simply, stating a fact as clear as day.
I see. Temperanth turned her head to the boy, taking in his appearance. It was only a moment though, after which she addressed him directly. Greetings Tamaruk. I am Temperanth and I wish to extend a belated welcome to our Weyr. Unlike Hedara's general tone of practicality and efficiency, Temperanth sounded much more like a friendly face. The Ice was much more peaceful then her rider.

A dragon, a real dragon, the first he had seen so closely. She was beautiful, even more so up close than at a distance, with her thickly dappled snout fading quickly into a icy blue as he looked up towards her eyes. He felt himself looking up, knew that he was only too likely to get in trouble for doing so, but that knowledge had no effect; his actions seemed as those of another, for here stood a Queen dragon, and she was talking to him! Suddenly aware that he had not yet replied to Temperanth, Tamaruk started to bow, which, since he was still kneeling, caused him to fall flat on his face.
Guyaky was flung part out of his hiding spot when His fell. Seeing the large-cousin ice-queen looking at him and His, he chirped apologetically.
Tamaruk turned his head slightly when Guyaky’s weight shifted off his back. Seeing Guyaky’s head, turned towards Temperanth, he stiffed. Please, please, please don’t try and take him, he thought, momentarily forgetting that no one, in two months at the Weyr, had so much as blinked at Guyaky’s presence.
“Thank you for your welcome,” Tamaruk said, trying to imitate the tone of voice that travelers had used when welcomed to the Hold by adults. As he finished, he pushed himself upright to stand in front of Temperanth, though his shoulders were still pulled forward protectively. He was careful to stand so that his back was not turned towards Lady Hedara, as doing so would have been hugely disrespectful; after all, it was a bad idea to even seem to be disrespectful to those with power.
Sinok took a couple steps forward, stopping next to Tamaruk with his shoulder pressed to the boy’s leg.
Guyaky flew forward slightly, and trilled a greeting to the small-green-maybe-friend who rode on large-cousin ice-queen’s back, though with a cautious eye towards the female-like-His-but-larger. After all, most of those creatures were dangerous, hurting His and trying to separate him from His. This one didn’t seem bad though, so Guyaky cautiously trilled a greeting to her as well.
Tamaruk froze, his eyes snapping up to where Guyaky hovered. He didn’t understand, why was Guyaky making noise, calling attention to himself.
Sensing that His was distressed, Guyaky carefully landed on His’s shoulder, crooning. He continued to do so, rubbing his head against His’s cheek, when His reached up to tap him on the head.

Hedara and Temperanth looked startled when the boy fell on his face. They were not really used to such reaction to the Ice dragoness. The pair was oddly in sync when after the initial shock they took a step forward, looking at Tamaruk and the Aurora that was flung from his hiding place.
"Are you alright?"
Not hurt are you?
The pair were still watching when the Aurora chirped apologetically and Tamaruk stiffed up. Hedara was somewhat becoming frustrated trying to read Tamaruk. It was hard for her sometimes and it really got to here. She apparently needed more practice understanding people. Temperanth on the other hand didn't have his reactions from before, at least directly, to use for the boy. Still from her first impression she caught his fear rather quickly.
Whatever has worried you, fear not. We would be a most unfit pair for leadership if we let a member of our Weyr be unprotected. Especially with Hedara and I standing next to them. Hedara banished her frustration immediately and nodded once. It was certainly one of the reasons she was worried about his falling on his face. How horrible would it be if someone she was talking to got hurt on her watch? She wouldn't stand for it. Sure, it wasn't like she hadn't stopped a fight or something but still.
Tamaruk seemed to recover relatively quickly though and gave a well mannered response. The pair relaxed somewhat, seeming to be much more at ease once he stood up. Hedara took a breath and glanced about, very much seriously inspecting the Weyr Bowl again. There was always other riders about but she didn't have time to talk to them all, just time see how the riders were feeling in general. She didn't look long, and returned her attention back as his flitter began to move.
Ivy chirped a response to the Aurora flitter. She was marvelously content talking to the other firelizard. More friends made her day. She liked her days normally, it was easy to please her after all.
Hedara raised her eyebrow when the flitter greeted her, though it quickly changed into a small smirk. She didn't like all firelizards, kinda like how she didn't necessarily like all dragons but in general she liked Auroras in both. It was fairly easy to figure out why.
"Hello little one. Protecting yours well?" She knew the answer of course.
