(3075)04.03 late morning
Yuki decided to check on the eggs after checking on her daughter. Yuki and Yura played together for a while before the child had to return to the creche for her nap. Yuki watched her daughter sleep for a short while before heading toward the kitchens. She hadn't eaten much that morning, having wanted to get to Yura as early as she could. She was hungry now, and decided to look for leftovers from breakfast.
She had grabbed a piece of bread when she heard a rattling by the hearth. She turned, excited, and saw one of the smaller eggs begin to shake. Her eyes widened, and her face broke into a smile.
Ayleneth, the flit eggs are Hatching! That was all the Aurora dragoness needed before broadcasting the announcement to the people who had indicated their interest. Yuki was already on her knees, excitedly awaiting the flitlets that would Hatch from the eggs. It was going to be a very colorful Hatching, that much she was sure of. The smallest one was rocking, and there was a crack up one of the bigger ones already! The two Gold eggs hadn't moved at all yet, but that was alright. Not many of the others had begun to move either.
The gentle voice shimmered through his mind, and D'rian raised his head briefly from his work on his newest project. Whistling softly, he called Cypress over, trilling lightly to the beast, then sending him on ahead to keep an eye on what was going on with the clutch. He then gently set the project into cold water, hearing it hiss as he dropped it. In his mind, he felt Cypress' excitement as the Brown resisted the urge to flutter around Yuki's head, merely settling to the hearth.
His would be along shortly! was the impression he gave to the AuroraRider.
Lan yawned. It was way too late for him. Ethilask was put away, Syne likewise had been seen to. Not that they had made it easy today. The pair were getting along okay with each other now, and that meant that the guarding aspect would become easier. However, Elthilask really didn’t want to let him go. That had been…tiring. The tall man plodded along to the kitchens looking fairly out of it. He really should be sleeping now. Unfortunately he hadn’t gotten a meal in a while and now he was hungry. Tired though he was, he knew he would be completely lost if he didn’t grab a bite. He did not want to be up at midday with an urge to snack. Best get the uninterrupted sleep.
He snuck in to grab a meal, taking his sweet time moving. It was too bright for him right now. He sighed and sucked it up, straightening up and going about getting his meal. It took about this time to note that there was some commotion. Huh, what was all that about. With a roll in his mouth he went to investigate, mildly curious. He did enjoy a little dinner theatre.
Cyan, get to the kitchens. Zigbrieth sat in the Bowl, nose now pointing toward the kitchen. He had heard something about this particular event now transpiring in the Weyr, and had designs on getting his rider involved. He had a few reasons for doing so, mostly to get his more go with the flow rider into the heart of things. As she was currently not doing anything he thought would get her ahead, he felt quite sure about nudging her in the right direction.
“Now?” Cyanee looked down at the knots she was tying and frowned a little. She was sitting not to far away, as she usually did. Zigbrieth turned around and huffed at her making her get up and pocket the mess of knots. She was pretty good at it, so she supposed she would go along with whatever it was that the Blue wanted. Even if she didn’t really want to be inside while he was out here…
Go, go. It’s starting to get busy, you will help.
“Okay.” Cyan walked over and gave him a pat before heading toward the kitchen, with the same pang of regret she usually got leaving Zigbrieth out of her sight. She breathed in and went into the kitchen taking a good look around. People were rushing about for food, and it sounding like there was a flitter hatching, if the humming was correct. She took a step back as a boy with dark hair rushed by with a bowl of meat. “Can I help?” The boy turned and handed her the bowl pointing toward the hearth.
“Take that there for the hatching. I am getting more ready, so come back in a second if you would.” He turned back after she took it and stared at him for a moment. He looked oddly familiar, like she had seen him before, but couldn’t place it. Either way she went to hand out meat, not noticing the boy much further.
Barlow continued to cut up meat, well used to helping out wherever he was needed. Usually after the initial period of chaos, things calmed down so he could duck out and get back to lessons. He never minded filling his free time though. He’d make sure everything was organized, then be off, no one having to note that he was here, but for the fact things had gone easily.

Yuki turned and smiled at the Brown flit who appeared from behind her, gently picking him up. "We don't want you getting caught up in whatever might happen, do we now?" she asked him, setting him on her shoulder. "You should stay there until Yours comes for you." She turned to the eggs then, the smallest of which had begun rocking vigerously now. Her eyes widened as a crack appeared around the widest portion of the egg, and the top half of the shell fell clean off. Inside it was curled a tiny White with a rather feminine body shape. She yawned and peeked over the edge of the egg half she'd curld up in, looking at the few people who had managed to gather in time to see her emerge from her shell. She chirped once, then let out a startled cry as the egg half tipped over, sending her slipping across the hearth for a short while before she righted herself. She was startled still, but managed to look at the people around her with interest, if a little unease.
The larger one with the crack was rocking now. Unlike its White sister, this one seemed happy to take its time getting out. It was almost like the inhabitant of the egg was purposely making the spectators wait.
Another egg began rocking, only slightly. Another of the smaller eggs, but the flitlet inside it didn't seem to want to come out. Almost as if it was, perhaps, afraid of the world outside the snug little shell it'd gotten used to.
The sound of wingbeats came from outside, as well as a whirl of dust that had a couple of those nearer the door grumbling good-naturedly. Moments later, a large young male came striding in the door, followed by a dark skinned female with two flits on her shoulders and one darting ahead of her. Both were easily recognizable, the man for his dragoness as well as his build, the young woman for her ability with fire-lizards and her missing eye.
Neither spoke as they came over, Cypress trilling to the young man and nuzzling Yuki before returning to his shoulder, settling down and watching intently. D'rian smiled to the rider of his dragon's mother and inclined his head slightly, then settled to watch curiously. He'd seen a couple of flit Hatchings of course, but it still amazed him how similar the little ones were to dragon Hatchlings, and how different. In his mind he could sense Rayneth watching as well, and he told her about the little White, about the shaking egg, and about the rest of the clutch, including the two golden hued eggs.
Laria called back her blue-purple male with a light chirruping noise, then settled slightly off from the others, Theia shifting to keep an eye on both their surroundings and the clutch, chirping excitedly to her Mine, who smiled and stroked the Aurora's nose. On her other shoulder Gus was watching curiously, his gray hide gleaming softly from a recent oiling, and Tanzanite was now seated on one of her knees, shifting from foot to foot, his purple side taking over in his excitement.
Lan stood near the back, tall enough to see what was going on even though more people filed in. Well now, it looked like some firelizards were hatching. He was in time to see a little White one break free, which made him smile a touch between bites of food. He’d not seen this sort of thing before, so he continued to watch as he took a bite of food. There sure were a lot of eggs too, so he could keep on watching until he was full and tired enough to get to bed. He noted how active it was in the more proper hours. Felt weird to be up now, but he didn’t mind it much. For now he kept his eyes on the moving eggs and the wary White.
Cyan bounced over to the people around the hearth and began offering meat to folks as they entered. She went to the woman with the flits, the two Aurora riders, and offered to the man in the back, though he merely continued eating his food. Maybe he just didn’t notice her. Still she went to grab more meat before pausing to look at the eggs. She smiled, looking a little more genuine then he had recently. Such a cute flitter. However she went back to get more meat from the boy that was helping out.
Barlow filled up the bowl with more meat, rather efficiently and handed it back to the Blue Weyrling. He watched as she went away, judging how much they would need for a clutch that sized. Two Queen eggs he judged, they tended to eat well. Perhaps some more to be on the safe side. If not just for them, then perhaps some of the people gathered with firelizards already would be interested in feeding them now. Best be safe. He continued working, trying to judge when it would be best to stop. He merely noted the White as a marker that soon he would have to have all the meat ready, no one really wanted to be caught without meat when firelizards were clamoring for food. He’d make sure no one was short.
The little White saw the one cutting the meat and looked at him. He was so far away though... She chirped hungrily, eyes on him. She turned toward the boy with the bread, eyes locked on the bread for a moment before scanning the others gathered there. Suddenly, one of the other eggs near her began to move, startling the skittish little creature. The egg broke quickly once it had started rocking, and a pale Pink emerged. Not out of the range of a normal Pink, the girl was just a bit on the small side. She spread her wings slowly, as if testing them, and then started to hum with the flits around her. The Pink child saw the girl giving away the round things that smelled good, and she chirped at the girl, her humming interrupted by the hunger gnawing at her belly.
The White had turned her attention back to the people nearby, and she turned again toward Lan, slowly making her way toward him. She crooned at him, aiming for food. She was hungry, she was. And he was big. He could protect her, be her friend.
Yuki smiled at the two female flitlets, taking a bowl of meat from the Blue Weyrlingrider with a nod. Just then, one of the Queen eggs began to shake slightly. There was a light scraping sound from within the egg, but only for a moment, as if the little flitlet within had already tired itself out. Unless she was just waiting for her Clutchsiblings to emerge before she revealed herself. The egg that was taking its time began to crack, as did one of the others. Things were beginning to move quickly now. Only time would tell the different colors in this Clutch.
Laria smiled at the Weyrling and took the offered meat, thanking her quietly before settling again, lightly tapping Tanzanite's nose when he tried to grab a scrap. "Not for you," she said mildly, and he cheeped in apology, then turned his head as the Pink Hatched, causing the White to skitter off.
D'rian also took the offered meat, then returned to watching the clutch curiously, his head cocked ever so faintly. This meant it was resting against Cypress's back, but the Brown didn't seem to mind, in fact seemed to be used to the movement, for he didn't move or even grumble about it. As the Pink came into the world and the White scampered off towards the Wherhandler, the Aurora Weyrling's lips twitched, then he looked back to see one of the Queen eggs shaking slightly, before it settled again, while the other shaking egg finally started cracking. He relayed the information to Rayneth, sensing her curiosity about what hues this clutch might hold. It was not a Northern one, he reminded her, so no Auroras or Ices would be present. They didn't appear this far South, remember? Her disappointment that they couldn't get a little her was palpable, but she got over it quickly.
Lan continued to watch, munching his food without thinking too much about it. The White was having a good long look around, which he supposed was good and well. A Pink appeared, and he observed her humming along with the older firelizards. He hadn’t observed the person handing out food, not even noting she was on her way back with more. He was just watching everything, and trying not to yawn. This wasn’t boring at all, he was quite interested, just felt like he should eat quick and get to bed. The sound of crooning brought his attention down to the White firelizard, but he stared blankly for a moment before quite getting it. Oh, she wanted food. He blinked a few more times. Right, food. He half wanted to look around for meat slurry, but that wasn’t right. The Weyrling returned though and offered some of the meat in the bowl with a smile, so he nodded briefly and took a handful. The rest of his roll disappeared into his mouth, a plate of food on a nearby chair. He bent down, balancing on his toes as he extended a bit of meat toward the creature. She was tiny! He was half afraid that breathing on her too hard would be detrimental. Still, she seemed to take to him all right, so he didn’t think too much beyond getting her food.
Cyanee smiled as she watched the tall man feed the firelizard. Good thing she still had some meat here. She continued to meander around, double checking to see if there was enough to go around. She spotted the Pink that had hatched and smiled wide. How cute! She wondered idly what exactly Zigbrieth would think of firelizards. He certainly had been quick in getting her here, but not for the flitters. Or that’s what it seemed like. She pondered the Blue’s motives for a moment, but didn’t think too long. Things were exciting enough that prolonged thought would have her miss something, and she didn’t want that as long as the larger eggs were rocking. She wanted to see what was inside them, the same as everyone else.
Barlow rested the knife to the side of the station and viewed the pile of meat critically. Seemed appropriate for the clutch at hand. A quick look back at the festivities showed that things were getting interesting, and that the Weyrling helper was being distracted by the hatching and checking on the meat distribution. He didn’t fault her he supposed. Figuring she would be back sooner or later he started to clean up, making sure the knife got cleaned and put away and that his hands were well and thoroughly clean. He was going to be learning some dragonhealing after this, best be clean. After that chores. Barlow got a lovely little warm feeling in his chest thinking about that. He did so love to be busy. For now he took a critical eye to the meat sitting on the counter. He would wait here a bit, make sure the girl picked up the rest of it. Otherwise he’d remind her.
The White flitlet ate the pieces of meat offered to her, then nuzzled Lan's hand. Yes. This one was good. After eating her fill, she curled up to sleep. She would have fun with this one. And, just like that, the bond was forged.
The Pink turned her attention to the man who had been cutting the meat. She leapt like a feline onto a nearby chair, and from there onto the counter. She nuzzled his hand, her eyes swirling with hunger. Would this one feed her?
One of the other small eggs was cracking, and slowly it fell apart. The tiny boy was primarily Grey, but his wingtips and tail tip were Black. The Grey indifference conflicted with the urges of the Black as he looked at the surrounding spectators. Not very many of them, really. How could he be sure any of them were good enough?
Lan watched the tiny flitter eat up and then curl up and fall asleep. He didn’t get stop the yawn that welled up and looked down at her again. She seemed to have the right idea. He gently scooped her up, letting her sleep in his arms. He wasn’t really sure about leaving her on the ground. He looked back toward the other eggs and then back at the little White flit. He had no idea what to do about naming it though. He reached over to grab more food and think it all over, oblivious to anyone who might be noting how he looked kinda like a half asleep father rocking their child to sleep. Lucky he didn’t either.
Barlow watched mildly, seeing that Cyanee wasn’t quite getting back. Maybe another moment or two. He looked down when a small flirelizard hide hit his hand, and he looked down calmly. A Pink was looking up at him, speaking loudly with her eyes. A tight lipped smirk flickered onto Barlow’s face and he briefly let his hand escape from the Pink. It returned in half a moment though, with meat for the little creature. He didn’t really think about doing it, but just figured the firelizard wanted food. She reminded him a little bit of a feline. He wondered about that.
Cyanee continued to walk around, watching the Pink flitter scamper off. That was just adorable. She flipped back to look at the eggs and spotted another egg hatching. Oh, a little gray! She peered at him and noted his wings were a little black on the edges. That was pretty cool. He looked adorable as well. She smiled a bit more, and slipped around to see if anyone else had appeared to try for the firelizards. She wondered for a minute if she should try to drag Cr’wean in here. As she thought about it she got a pretty good picture of her brother getting into a grumpy mood starting he didn’t need another mouth to feed. This made her chuckle a little bit. That was her brother after all.
Laria and D'rian both grinned as the Pink scampered off. Little one knew what she wanted, something both of them could appreciate. The appearance of the little Gray-Black had D'rian cocking his head slightly, but Laria wasn't interested in the little male. She was more looking for a larger flitter to keep her two boys in line right now. Not a Queen, she wasn't ready for THAT responsibility yet, but maybe a Bronze or brown, she thought.
D'rian wasn't even considering WHAT he'd like, just that he'd like a playmate for Cypress. The brown got bored just sitting and watching him all day after all, and he couldn't wrestle with Rayneth. She was far too large after all. Humming himself, unknowingly doing so with the pattern of the adult flitters present, he continued to watch and wait.
The Pink munched the meat, then yawned like a feline. Her eyes shimmered with thanks as she nuzzled him again. With that, she leaned back on her haunches and launched herself into the air, landing on Barlow's shoulder with a slight scrambling of claws to keep from falling back to the floor. She did scratch him up a bit, but the injuries were minor, not even bleeding. She began to hum softly, a song that she had just made up on the spot, but one that sounded surprisingly good for a newly Hatched flitlet.
The Queen egg began shaking again, and out came a silvery muzzle that vanished in an instant. Scraping could be heard within, and the Grey-Black, interested now, went over to investigate. The Queen egg burst open, causing the Grey-Black to stop short. The Queen within was indeed Silver, but her legs were Pink. She heard the boy humming and turned toward him. She made her way to him, humming along with him, though just slightly off-pitch.
Another egg began to crack. This one's tail was exposed first, and the egg rolled over, sending the tail into the air. The Flitlet within began squeaking in surprise, struggling to get its tail inside so it could right itself within the egg.
The attention of both went to the Queen egg as that muzzle appeared for just a tantalizing moment and the scrabble of claws was heard. Cypress and Laria's trio all chirred, encouraging the young Queen to show herself, and when she did, D'rian grinned in amused delight. She wasn't QUITE fully Silver. That little bit of pink on her tiny paws was just adorable! As she righted herself and came towards him, D'rian blinked in surprise, and Cypress nipped his ear. Must not keep her waiting! was the impression D'rian got off of him, and he chuckled softly and offered her the meat he held, renewing his humming along with her.
Laria smiled as the little Queen went to the AuroraWeyrling. He now had two female minds, both of them potential Clutchers, to contend with, she thought, then turned her attention down to the clutch again, watching and smiling more as the new flitter didn't QUITE make it out of its egg before it ended up rolling over.
Annae watched her two blue firelizards play on her cot as she prepared to go down to the Kitchens to get something to eat. She'd just finished another of her chores and was now hungry. Emri and Hrin, her two Blue firelizards, were flying at each other and dodging, and diving, and every other antic a firelizard could do in the air or on the ground. She rolled her eyes at their antics and left her room.
Her stomach growled and bunched up. It wanted food. She winced at the pain in annoyance. She arrived in the Kitchens, just in time to see a large Queen firelizard egg hatch, revealing a Silver-Pink firelizard. She gasped and food was forgotten for a moment as she moved over to the firelizard hatching that was taking place, and from the looks of it, it was just barely started. She looked around but didn't see anyone she knew.
Emri and Hrin popped in from between with a croon of delight and joy at seeing a firelizard hatching.
Annae grinned as her two blues came and landed on her shoulders. Emri on her left and Hrin on her right. She moved a bit closer to the hatching and wondered if any of the babies would consider her worthy. Even with her current two firelizards. She stopped a drudge that passed by and asked for a tray of bread and cheese and some juice. Then she turned back and watched the babies and eggs.
