Cait
Cyan was sitting on a chair in Cr’wean’s room, looking intensely worried. She had her hands in her lap and was looking down at them, listening while her brother talked. She rubbed her thumb against the scar on her palm, but otherwise not moving. Eventually he stopped talking. She didn’t talk for a long time. Finally she managed to ask a single question.
“But why?”
“How on Pern should I know? That kid is trouble, I tell you. You’d think I turned into a shelling celebrity around here, because suddenly everyone knows I’m the brother of his leash! Now what, they gonna try to drag you around to keep him in a cell? Burn that!” Cyan flinched a little but continued to look at her hands. She could hear him, but she was lost in her own thoughts. Most of his yelling about how she shouldn’t step within a hundred paces of Kel was not absorbed.
“But he was sorry, he didn’t want to hurt…people.” It wasn’t a lie, it just didn’t explicitly say that the person he was sorry about hurting was her. Cr’wean wasn’t about to let that go though.
“Cyanee, people are not always as nice as you hope that they are. I thought…” He stared down at her palm. “I thought you figured that out.” He simmered in a quiet sort of fury. Cyan furrowed her brow. She could theoretically understand, but this sort of thing didn’t get through to her. Not to where it counted. But she wanted… she felt like she was going to cry. Why were things like this? She stood up, swallowing as she did so. She didn’t cry, but her eyes were threatening it.
“I’m going.” She turned but her brother reached out.
“Where?”
“Outside.” His hand fell away and she walked out, getting some air. She needed wide open spaces. What with her throat constricting, she didn’t need anything else to feel like a cage.
---
Zigbrieth nosed his rider, ruffling her hair a bit. Cyan leaned into it but didn’t say anything. She didn’t know what to do. She knew what she wanted to do, but didn’t even know if she could. Zigbrieth just let her be, trying to comfort her in little ways. For once there was something more important than the schedule. She hadn’t cried. Maybe just too overwhelmed to do so, but she hadn’t. They had found a nice spot, someplace that the open sky over head and a nice breeze could calm her nerves. But her thoughts were not dispersed by the wind, or spread out into the clouds. They kept spinning and whirling, all centered around one question. The same question as always. Soon enough she stood up.
This is stupid. Tactful as always.
“I know.” She started walking.
I will tell him, you know, if you get into trouble. Cyan smiled sadly.
“I know.”
She went to the lower caverns, down to where rumor had it, there was a bonus occupant. Someplace that the Wher handlers reigned. Where the small Blue rider got nervous for just being there, much less all the rest on her plate. Breathe. Breathe. Her fingers laced together in front of her, but she couldn’t stop them from moving. She had to find that woman. The one that was in charge. Because as much as her brother had yelled, it hadn’t gotten into her thick skull. So she had to see Kel.
