Afternoon
Outside the staff offices
“R’le!” R’le stopped stiff, then turned around, eyeing the man who called him.
“Didja need something V’lan?” V’lan strode up, slow but confident.
Both men faced each other for a moment. R’le seemed to lean, loose and relaxed, though perhaps a bit more purposeful than usual. V’lan had the natural stance of an orator, not stiff exactly but strongly upright.
It wasn’t that they disliked each other but they hadn’t found a rhythm to working together yet.
“May I ask where you are going?” R’le could tell V’lan was trying to be nice about it but it wasn’t like he hadn’t already tried to play hooky. He did do that.
“Checking up on D’gan’s wing’s practice. Ya wanna come with?” V’lan deliberately considered. He had a hard time with R’le. He understood the man, a bit. He was however, the kind of person that would have never made it anywhere near leadership at Igen.
“No, however I would appreciate a debriefing later.”
“Sure. If that’s all-“
“May I ask a personal question?”
Silence lingered a moment.
“If ya like.”
“What do you think of Rilora?” R’le stared at V’lan a moment before letting a chuckle escape. V’lan raised a polite eyebrow.
“She’s a good friend and I think she’s a great Weyrwoman. It’s been that way for a while. Why, someone say I think different?” R’le grinned, but his gaze was locked on V’lan. The man seemed to detect it but deemed it more important to ignore.
“No, I was merely curious.” V’lan gave a brief nod to R’le before he said, “I will leave you to it.” With that the Weyrleader was off.
R’le watched him go before reaching into his bag and pulling out some of the sappy chew he kept on hand for Burn. He chewed on it himself while pondering V’lan. What exactly was he trying to figure out. He thought about it a while before a light bulb clicked on and R’le grinned. Well now. He wondered if he could say anything about it to anyone, and judged probably not. It was too bad though. He woulda liked to. Still even he wasn’t about to stick his foot in the mess the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader now found themselves.
Still, he woulda liked to tell someone the Weyrleader was crushing on Rilora, true, false or speculation.
