Metanath moved to his rider’s side as soon as Noila followed her mother away, but remained standing. There was work to be done and they had idled too long. Work was good. Work would uncomplicated things.
I’m returning to the docks, N’kio. See you soon. With a final, backwards glance to Saphireth, Metanath unfolded his wings and leapt into the sky.
“I should get back to the Weyr,” came Elora’s voice, quieter than normal.
N’kio nodded, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. “Yes, yeah, whatever you need to do.”
As much as he wanted her around, he, too, wanted his space from her. He needed to throw himself into his work and focus, because everything else was wrong – well, no. He didn’t regret seeing his girls, or even Isbel, but he regretted how they met Elora. It was too sudden, and she hadn't signed on for children and an old flame. Truth be told, he wasn’t even sure how much of a relationship he had with Elora. The rules of the Weyr no longer applied, but now it seemed like it didn’t have to. The whole situation had gotten out of hand very fast, and now they both struggled to catch up.
“Elora, I…” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Before you go, I just want to say – I would like things to work…with us. But I know you probably want to think about things. Just…come back sometime and talk with me? Or I can come up to the Weyr, if you’re not doing anything a certain day, that is, then maybe…”
He felt he was talking too much, so he trailed off his sentence. After all, there wasn’t anything else he could say to make things better. Not now, or for a while to come.
N’kio shifted on his feet. “I should return to my work. Just…don’t stay away too long, dragon-girl. You’ll be missed.”
