Ayren Weyr, hidden amongst the mountains, distances itself more and more from the rest of Pern. Desperately trying to keep its secrets to itself. Afraid of what the other Weyrs may think, Ayren lives the way it's always done: alone and buried beneath the snow.
But the fast approaching Pass brings about another fear: Threadfall is due soon, and Ayren has too few riders and weyrfolk. So, for the first time in nearly 800 turns, Ayren is forced to open up, and request transfers from the rest of Pern. With outsiders coming in, everyone knows it's going to be hard for their dragons to remain secret much longer.
