Pets: None
Appearance: Emmeline has the looks of a proper Fairgold lady, and would look so lovely all the time if she’d just put in a little more effort. At least according to aunt Coralee’s constant scolding. She’s got hair that gives her surname a run for its marks, though the name originates from her Rider ancestry: overall it’s a shining yellow blonde with just a touch of a wave. Her eyes can blend into her light appearance if not accenting with something dark, the pale grey green color hiding behind the mess of yellow hair and fair complexion. She’s got a stride that hints at confidence to go along with her 5’4” stature, though her put together step too often falters. A point of embarrassment for her and her absorbed aunt.

Personality: Emmeline has learned well the rules that society plays by and chooses her battles, though perhaps not always wisely. She is a master of holding her tongue, as one learns when a touchy aunt often holds a tugging hair comb growing up. She knows how to make conversation, balance the group, and contribute just the right amount in lessons. She’s worked out the social savvy demanded of her by the family. While she appreciates the ways it helps her navigate life, she resents that she’s been raised to her aunt and grandmother’s ideals of “a Fairgold lady” without much say in the matter. The obligations her mother’s side of the family have piled on her are unwelcome, but Emmeline puts on a good face and takes out her personal grievances in finding other freedoms from her overbearing aunt.
Emmeline enjoys knowing and has a knack for holding onto information and figuring out the rest of a story even if it’s not all presented at once. Not to mention, lessons is one of the few places the judging eye of her aunt is not welcome. Emmeline is fairly handy with pencil and paper and has her drawings proudly hanging at her dad’s (her aunt wouldn’t tolerate such casual displays as hanging up a few scattered papers). She values the substantial relationships she has and is very close with her father. She enjoys being a spoiled daddy’s girl and glows with the attention offered.
Emmeline always makes good on her word and finds more self-admiration in that quality she chose for herself than the others she was “forced” to have. She finds herself in possession of her aunt’s nasty habit of not giving people the benefit of the doubt, though she’ll still put on a good face in their company. She would rather avoid their ire, if there’s any to be had. Emmeline will overvalue looks and critically over-analyze others’ words, drawing negative meanings when there were none to begin with. If she’s decided she doesn’t like you, there’s very little to be done about it. The best way to end up on that list is to have something she doesn’t. The little green monster of jealousy lurks behind her light green eyes, ready to alight on those who draw better, dress better, or luxuriate in the freedoms of not being related to the Fairgold family.
History:
The Fairgold family line claims they are descended from first Weyrwoman of Telgar. It is a distinct honor and grants the family a place in the social eye, Aunt Coralee makes sure of that like her mother Leora did before her. Fairgold women always Impress. Always. Reputation everything.
So when Portia Fairgold didn’t live up to expectations she was in for a rather bitter adulthood. Or rather, she might have been if she didn’t detach entirely. Her family frowned on her relationship with some leatherworker in the lower caverns. She was still a Candidate and could not endanger the family reputation by getting pregnant and missing her chance to Impress. But the teenage Portia did have a son, Reed, and did Impress afterward to a Green. Though that did get her sister and mother to quiet down for a time, their relationship never really healed. And though she went back to Price the leatherworker after weyrlinghood, two Turns later, things couldn’t go back to the way they were. The couple stayed together long enough for Emmeline to be born, but things fell apart soon after that. Feeling isolated from family on all sides, Portia withdrew into her relationship with her Green. The two became passive and disinterested in the world, entering a deep depression.
Someone needed to take care of little Emmeline. So Coralee appointed herself to make sure that this little Fairgold lady grew up right. So while Emmeline was a crèche babe in so much as they fed her and cleaned her sticky face, she had some portion of a family in her aunt, and some portion in the days she spent with her dad. She knows and likes her brother, though he’s a bit the quiet sort for her. While she doesn’t believe she can know what’s going on in that silent head of his, she likes Reed well enough.
Emmeline grew up in the Weyr, learning its ins and outs with the other weyrbrats. Of course her aunt had an opinion on each and every friend she made, steering the child towards the proper young ones and away from those deemed “too wild.” Emmeline learned all there was to known and soaked up learning and lessons offered by anyone who fit the category of “Not Aunt Coralee.” She’s been in Candidate lessons on and off, retaking them to know her peers and the incoming Candidates and avoid her aunt. At the still young age of seventeen, she’s been standing for some Turns but still has many left. She’s not worried about the whole Rider thing, it’ll sort itself out. At least for now, with a good many Turns of buffer left.

Name: Rioth
Color: Pink
Personality: Rioth is a lovely Pink with the ability to see the big picture. She is not content to think about what will do her good, and she is often found deep in thought about her wing, her Weyr, and all of Pern. She doesn’t shy from problems, and she is secure enough in herself to be aware of problems she can’t solve without ignoring them or being driven to despair. Most of her physical abilities rest squarely in the range of average for her color. This does mean she tends to neglect those things that other can do just as well in favor of what her real strengths are. A kind or stern word, she will learn to use both. She isn’t afraid to listen either. For Rioth, it’s all about balance.
