“Your drink Ma’am.” Shri looked up and nodded once as the glass was placed before her and she started to sip on it. Sweet enough. A bit tart but the sweet fruit was enough that she could drink this stuff all day. And might have too. Her gaze was straight forward, but it was patched with that of her fair.
A vision of suspicion flickered through, showing humans loads goods onto a boat. It was difficult to separate what she actually saw with Dea’s harsh opinions of all humans. Shri shouldn’t automatically assume they were smuggling something. She took a long sip of juice, and relaxed from the tension she didn’t even know she had with Analis’ calm observation. Some money was changing hands. It looked all very official, but she was a merchant. She knew how money changing hands was second nature, for fair or foul purpose.
Selt send a very clear picture from inside a crate. How he was in there? Shri had long since stopped questioning it. He was the smallest of her crew after all. Looked like a bunch of cloth. Neatly packed, so she didn’t question it too hard. She just let the firelizard go back to what he did best, analyzing everything.
“Reek!” Shri’s eyes focused on the table in front of her, and stared at the firelizard sitting in front of her. Red firelizard, just a hint of dust and rust with a texture to his hide. A living terror combination, Crimson and Brick together at last. His wings were flared out, his vocalization of delight paired with the terrible sight of juice dripping from his mouth.
Shri moved her hand, and he ducked to the right, where her other hand was waiting. On deft flick left the firelizard smarting, crying as Shri pulled the juice back. She needed to train Panero better. He recovered quickly, whining sweetly for forgiveness. Not likely brat. She knew why she had caved into caring for Dea’s difficult son. Same reason why she hadn’t let Dea or Selt’s eggs get sold. She didn’t trust anyone else to do it right.
Shri snapped her finger and Panero looked at her stubbornly. “Now Panero.” He pouted once more before taking off. She frowned. She wasn’t going to let him be the reason she didn’t get any closer to what was going on.
She had been doing this for a while. She had zero leads for what had happened at the weyr. However, she knew that someone knew something, and money talked. Now, she might not run in darker circles, but she knew that you make a name for yourself providing services and eventually they get noticed. Dea’s disastrous clutch might have come in handy for that. Sell some firelizard eggs for the right price to the right person and she could hear something. She just wanted to know who to act for.
So she was on the tail of possible smuggling operations. Not ideal, but she could easily make friends with those sort of people. If they were really smugglers. Shri sighed and chugged the rest of her juice. Bleh, flitter spit.
Maybe she would have better luck being a criminal tomorrow.
