Welcome
First off, welcome to Rainbow Mists Weyr! We are a role playing community that's been together since 2004 and we're excited to welcome new people into our writing family! Please feel free to message anyone, especially staff, if you have any questions about joining. Make sure to say hello once you've settled in.
Finally, as admin here, I want to add an additional welcome to new folks reading this message! I'm so excited you're here and can't wait to meet you and see what kinds of crazy adventures we can get into!
Below is a simple, comprehensive guide to filling out the character application form and how the first few steps of becoming a member work. Read on!
Step 1: Joining Rainbow Mists Weyr
Just sign up for an account with our Proboard! We are an account per player site so you only need one. Use the name you'd like to be called as your display name.
Step 2: Getting your character ready
To create your character, we will be using the form below. It is the form for a new Candidate character. If you wish to bring in a different type of character, please find the appropriate form in the list of Character Application Forms.
Certain traits and pets cost marks, our site currency. You get 100 marks just for your first character when you join. You can read more about earning and spending marks in the Mark Accounts board.
When your application is complete, please post it on the Character Application board.
Below is a detailed guide, that goes step by step through each field.

Dragon Preferences:
First, the name. The majority of Pernese have a first name and a surname. Rider honorifics are encouraged to have consonants after the apostrophe. Second, please no common Terran (Earth) names, such as Susan or Johnathan. Surnames are taken from the father's family, and orphaned children take a common last name that varies by location.
Age is important as it must consider what Rank the character has and where they are in their life. A 12 Turn old is not going to be a full fledged Rider, nor is a 35 Turn old going to be a Candidate. Candidates are accepted at an age no lower than 13 Turns and may stand until they are 23 Turns old. For Hall rank ages, see the Rank section.
A Turnday is the day of your character's birth listed in TTTT.MM.DD format or MM.DD of TTTT Turn format. The Pernese calendar has thirteen months with twenty eight days each and two extra days at the end of the Turn for Turnover festivities. The Turn of birth is calculated as follows.
1. Assume they've already had their Turnday for the Turn and use that as their age
2. Subtract their age from step one from the current Turn
3. The resulting number is their birth Turn
You are not required to, but may, list your character's sexuality.
Our site has two Weyrs in vastly different settings where your character may be role played. Rainbow Mists Weyr is in a jungle valley in the Southern Continent and Ice Stone Weyr is in the icy, snowy plains and crags of the far reaches of the Northern Continent.
A character's Rank lists their position in the Weyr, Hold or Hall where they reside. Since this is a Candidate form we're working on, your character's rank is either Dragon Candidate, LifeWing Candidate, or Wher Candidate. Other characters with young dragons, LifeWings or whers are referred to as weyrlings, fledglings and wherlings respectively. When their dragon, LifeWing or wher is fully grown they are referred to as Dragon Rider, LifeWing Rider, or Wher Handler. Characters within the Hold/Hall system often have a craft title as their rank. Apprentices are between ages 12 to 18, Journeymen and women are ages 18+ to approximately 30, and older crafters may reach the rank of Master.
Family members must be at least listed briefly: Names, age and occupation for each. The friends section is for close NPC friends and friends they've made in the role play so far.
Pets include firelizards, domesticated felines and canines, and trained shoulder birds. Runners are not permitted at Weyrs, but can be listed as previously owned pets. Please list a name and coloration for each pet and include them in your character's history.
Appearance is often the shortest part of a character's bio, and that's just fine. Please make sure to tell us your character's eye and hair color, skin tone, height, build (slim, stocky, broad, chubby, etc.), and any other relevant information. Their usual clothing description, if you want to include one, belongs in this section (you can mention certain colors or styles they like to wear). No lists.
Personality is the part of your application where you get to describe your character's general demeanor, personality traits, exceptions, likes, and/or dislikes (and why, where appropriate. Most of the "why" should be reasoned through their history, if it is not in the personality section). A good paragraph here is nice. No lists please.
History is typically the longest part of a character's biography. Make sure to include where they grew up and with whom, any major childhood events or dreams. We're working on a Candidate, so their Search should be included in this section. The more you fit here the better! Be creative. (If you would like your character to be related to a Lord Holder, or someone of high rank, you will need an outstanding character bio and marks to pay for it. Most often your character should be related to an existing NPC of Rank. If you have any questions, ask the staff for more details on getting your character to be a relative of a Ranking NPC.)
Dragon Preferences are for Candidate and to-be Candidate characters only. It is a place to list approximately three colors of dragon you would like your character to Impress. You are not guaranteed any of these colors by listing them. You may also break this section into "My Preferences" and "My Character's Preferences" if, for example, you personally would most like your Candidate to Impress a Blue, but in character, he most wants a Bronze. You may also select "No Preference". Lists permitted.
The Adoption question determines what happens to your character in the event you are gone from the role play with no word about your absence for over three months. If you select "Yes" then your character will be put up for adoption. This means that they could be later role played by another member of the role play. If you select "No" your character will, in most cases, be transferred to Waterfall Valley Weyr to gently ease them out of the story line, at which point they may be reintroduced into the role play upon your return. If a character is adopted during your absence, the adopter has all rights to the character and is not obligated to give control of the character back to you. You may change your adoption preference at any time by indicating it on your character's information page. If your character is an important character of Rank or vital to a plot, they may be shifted into the Foster Character system, where they will be role played by staff in important situations where they are needed until they can be moved to Waterfall Valley Weyr or adopted out to another role player.
Step 3: Getting your character approved
You're almost done! Now you just have to wait for your character to be approved. This is a good time to introduce yourself to the community if you haven't already. Once your application is read, a staff member will post on your application thread to let you know if you need to make any revisions. Just revise and resubmit (post on your thread so the staff know you've changed things). This last part is very quick and your character should be approved by the next time a staff member is online.

Step 5: Have Fun!
Now that your character is complete and ready to go here's a quick list of ideas for settings at Rainbow Mists Weyr.
The Beach: A warm area, cooling to breezy comfortable temperatures at night. Swimming is a favored activity here, though the occasional flitt egg Clutch is found. Some people just like to go for walks here, and perhaps walk for a bit to spend a day at Cliff-Side Sea Hold.
The Paths around the Jungle: A simple dirt path surrounded by a multitude of tropical trees. An ideal place for chatting, don't you think?
The Candidate Barracks Entrance: Before the tunnels wind away to private quarters, there is a large cave area in which a few friends or strangers can talk. Five chairs are provided.
A Waterfall Pool: The sound of falling water, the misty air, the swirling pool. What better place to take a bath or dip your feet in the water? Dragons are also washed in these pools at times.
The Higher Rock Paths: There are paths leading up the rockier hills onto flat areas where one can over look the valley. There are two, unconnected top areas, and they make rather nice vistas, though not comfortable seats.
The Kitchens: Food, gossip, and people in a generally good mood. You can almost always find someone here.
The Weyr Bowl: Dragons and Riders bustle through this place like it's Main Street. Perhaps someone will stop a moment to talk to you.
The Halls Throughout the Weyr: Where else is better to run into someone new? (Perhaps a bit too literally)
Your Assigned Barrack: Meet your roommates; fun, right?
