There are five essential types of Dragon-Rider pairs. They are match, complement, supplement, growth, and opposite.
Match: Dragon and Rider are extremely similar. They relate to each other's likes and dislikes. There is a lot of understanding and support of self in these pairs. Dysfunctional pairs may occur when a difference of opinion occurs amongst such similar personalities or due to frustration from constantly being around another personality so similar.
Complement: Combining the strengths and weaknesses of the Rider and dragon make a complete and strong pair. They are capable of assisting each other in their weak spots and find the differences between them refreshing. Dysfunctional pairs spite the weakness of the other or are irritated by the few differences between them.
Supplement: Rider and dragon assist each other's weak points but can't cover everything. There are simply things that together they do not have the skills to do. They have some entirely separate traits that the other may not show interest in. This is accepted in healthy pairs. In dysfunctional pairs they cannot understand the other's point of view and are angry or disheartened because of this. They may also express frustration regarding the things they cannot do.
Growth: In these pairs the dragon and Rider are quite different. These differences will cause growth of character and maturity in healthy pairs. They may not always see eye to eye but if they can work together they can accomplish a good deal. These pairs often don't understand the thought process or motives of the other. Communication is essential in these pairs. Dysfunctional pairs can become distant or hostile toward each other.
Opposite: Dragon and Rider have very opposite manners. In healthy pairs this can encourage understanding and acceptance between two different views of life. However, it causes frustration and hurt in dysfunctional pairs who cannot reconcile their differences.
