Rainbow Mists Weyr
It has been over half a century since Rainbow Mists Weyr was founded, but the backing of Waterfall Valley Weyr has made them a large player on the world stage. Rainbow Mists has been rather unconventional and it means that there is more than personal pride that drives Benden to try to take the center stage. Amidst all of this political tension Rilora, a young Goldrider, has become the Sr. Weyrwoman in the wake of the long lived leadership of Weyrwoman Isodae. Since Isodae stepped down, Rilora will have to learn to stand on her own for Rainbow Mists Weyr, and for herself. More recently, tension has been growing between RMW and Igen, and the breakdown of these relationships could have disastrous consequences.
Political troubles are not the only issue in Rainbow Mists. It has come to light that there have been people lurking in the dense jungles outside RMW. When approached they gave a strange story about looking for RougeWing eggs, but vanished within hours. When the camp was looked over, almost nothing was left except one scout, who quickly fled, and a unmarked grave that held two dead bodies. Who were the people that did this and what are their motives? The fear is fading some with time, but the weyrfolk are still scared of going into the jungle and no one knows what these people's plans are for the future.
Despite the initial terror of what might be going on, the completion of the road from RMW and Cliffside was cause for a Gather of grandiose proportions as Holders, Crafters, Weyrfolk, and Riders all took the chance to forget the troubles. However, their reprieve was short lived. Several months after the discovery of the jungle grave, the Headwoman was found to be missing early one morning. Within moments of the discovery, the search was on, but it ended too soon; the Headwoman’s body was found, hidden under a desk in a storage room.
Three turns later, the subject of what happened hardly ever comes up, as people get on with their lives. Most of the Weyr has moved on, as nothing of like magnitude has happened since. The questions of “why the Headwoman?” and “What did she know or do that made her the target?” are now heard only rarely. Only a few people know about the diary received by Rilora almost a Turn and a half after the Headwoman’s unexpected demise. Nor is anyone certain if there are other eyes and ears at the Weyr.
Nor was that all that would be faced. Not half a Turn later, the Lord and Lady of Cliffside vanished, taken on dragonback and not seen again. Two months later, the fires began ay Golden Flight Hold, breadbasket of the South. The fires would rage for well over three months, as dragons and riders fought valiantly against the hungry blaze. Fortunately, many of the fields were saved, though it would by no means be a Turn of surplus crops. This lack of surplus has been felt more keenly, with the raid on a supply caravan by strange dragonriders, which followed losses of entire caravans earlier in the Turn. One such raid left two dragonriders dead, and two Weyrs looking for justice for their lost riders. An egg was stolen off the Sands. Targeted attacks and attempts on a Weyrwoman's life could no longer be overlooked. And so Pern returned to grim war. Fires burned on Rainbow Mists doorstep, set by combatants. Prisoners were stolen. And all to what end?
Ice Stone Weyr
Born from candidates from RMW and the riderless dragons that protected Pern from the DeathWings back in Turn 3011, Ice Stone Weyr remains one of the most unconventional Weyrs on Pern.
The Weyr’s uncommonly high cross Impression rate has long been known but when men are impressing Queens some of the riders in the Weyr are saying this should not be. Some are claiming that a man could not properly understand a Queen's needs, and Silverlights just continue Impressing men and women alike. Some say that these 'Queens' should be sterilized, prevented from clutching eggs. Some say that there is no problem. Still others would like to see no Silverlights in the Weyr at all. With such stubborn riders, tension in the Weyr is rising fast.
The Hold isn't silent on the matter either. The Lord Holder adamantly disapproves of Silverlights' current status and has barred the Weyr from Searching at Icy Caverns Hold.
In the wake of such heavy debates, stress runs high in everyone. The old Sr. Weyrwoman Sanshe, trying her best to hear every side of the argument and calm riders on both sides, fell ill. Though her life was not in danger, she was forced to retire to warmer climes, leaving the much less charismatic Hedara to fill her place. Of course it means that something could very easily go wrong with such a young rider leading the stubborn Weyr. Indeed, something did manage to go wrong, for it is not just the people of the Weyr who find Silverlights controversial. A group of people kidnapped a Silverlight weyrling and her rider, A'mir, the son of a minor Lord Holder. The pair was rescued, but not until a lot of time had passed, and the little Silverlight dragoness might never fully recover. Then, at Ice Temperanth’s first Hatching, another Silverlight entered the world — a male Silverlight. The Weyrlinghood of this dragon was marked by continuous increases in tension at Ice Stone, and young A’mir’s departure did nothing to help. Those arguing that Silverlights were Queens and deserved all the respect that entailed saw it as cowardice, while those agitating for the removal of Silverlights from their ranking position saw it as an admission that they were right
Of course, it doesn’t help that the group which kidnapped A’mir has friends on the inside, and that the only person who can identify one of them is the runaway son, and now rider of Chrome Slinesteth, of the man who commands the group. The boy still hasn’t come forward with what he knows; except to tell his best friend and ask her not to tell anyone. He isn’t sure if he’ll be believed, and doesn’t want to be evicted from the place he now calls home.
Now as the Weyr seethes at the horrible act (presumably perpetrated with the knowledge of Hold leadership), to break open the eggs upon the Hatching Sands themselves, and the Hold snarls its defiance of a Weyr to whom (they think, anyway) the loss of holders has no meaning, a handful of riders act on Hedara’s direct command to attempt to defeat those who would kidnap riders. Maybe, having done so, they will be able to return peace to the relationship between Hold and Weyr. But can even they, knowing as they must just a single side of the story, uncover the truth in time? For when anger has been held too long, it has a power all of its own.
