(Born: 58.09.14)
Appearance: Tall (six feet), broad of shoulder and narrow of hip as one might expect a man who claims Smithing as his occupation to be, Barrek’s form is fit and toned from turns as first the Weyrsmith’s apprentice, then later his helper of equal rank. His skin is mildly tan from spending time both in the elements and in front of the heat of a forge. Like any Smith worth his salt, Barrek sports a number of minor scars from his trade and few that are written off as job-related injuries but are truly of an entirely different nature.
Possessing oftimes unruly light brown hair—but for his nose and mind, the only bit of his father he has in him—Barrek prefers to keep his hair cropped relatively short though just long enough to run fingers through when frustrated. His face is ovular with a strong brow and a pointed chin very much like his mother’s. His eyes are a clear blue in color that only becomes cloudy and dark when the man is in his most foul of moods. His nose—as previously stated; a trait from his father—is long and pointed though suits his face structure rather well and his lips are often set in a straight line or a crooked smirk, the upper lip thin and bowed and the lower full.
(Play By: Charlie Hunnam)
Personality: It is rather hard to read Barrek as he possesses a duality that isn’t often expressed around those he must “pretend”. To those who know him truly, Barrek is a determined, competitive, and some might say heartless individual. Though it’s not so much that he’s heartless as he has very little concern for those who are not a part of his plan for the future—this includes his blood family strangely enough, though he does seem to tolerate his sisters more than his parents. Aside from the collective views of the little band of outlaws of which he is a part, unless a person conforms to his ideas and plans, they are insignificant or worse…in the way. It is never a good position to be if one values their health and wellbeing.
A highly competitive individual, Barrek isn’t particularly tolerant of those that get in his way and because of this tends to form little rivalries amongst the ranks of the Northern Outlaws though for the most part, aside from a few intentional near misses, things have never escalated beyond the control of his superiors. Despite his tendencies to jostle for rank in the group, he is worth the time that was spent to train him as a child and later the money spent to get him Apprenticed.
Of course, if you recall there is a flipside to this oftentimes callous man. When in the Weyr and forced to pretend to at least tolerate those around him—though he could never be accused of pretending to be nice or even cheerful—Barrek comes across as a somewhat eccentric, grumpy and abrupt individual. He will engage in conversation, though never seems to reavel much about himself aside from what others know—he is the “son” of one of the Weyr’s Healers and has two younger sisters who are considered to be reasonably beautiful and skilled in their chosen professions just as he himself is skilled at Smithing. Aside from that he really isn’t too friendly though he does tend to rein in his snide remarks when at the Weyr. The one thing that could possibly get him in trouble, however, is his tendency to burn through willing women in the Lower Caverns and it is undeniable that there is at least one or two unknown bastards running about the weyr with his nose or eyes.
History: The ways things happen in Weyrs has not changed in quite a long time. There are always flights and it’s not just dragons that come together in the heat of the moment. There are always those who don’t win the chase and their riders are left to find company amongst the Weyr’s inhabitants. It was just such a situation that Rekalia Malvois found herself in at the age of eighteen; a Holder girl who had been Searched as a Candidate then left standing only to find that she rather enjoyed life at the Weyr. It was probably ill-advised to engage in such activities, especially with a clutch on the Sands, however everyone makes choices they later regret.
Several months later, as the Clutch hardened on the Sands, Rekalia discovered just how big of a mistake she’d made by allowing B’nor to seduce her. She was pregnant and as a result, ineligible to stand at the upcoming clutch. Things only got worse from there as, because she was Holdborn, her ideas about pregnancies and responsibility were vastly different from the Weyr mindset. She approached the dragonrider and was quite stunned to find him indifferent of her condition, even denying that the child she carried was his though it could be no other man’s. The later was likely in an attempt to keep from being scolded for spoiling a Candidate so close to hatching while the former was a combination of the man’s own indifference as well as the mindset that a child was not his responsibility as he had better things to worry about, being a dragonrider and all.
Nine months later, approximately two months after the Clutch hatched, a clutch that the young woman was forced to watch from the stands, a boy child was born and given the name Barrek in the fashion that Weyrfolk often hand—Bar, from B’nor who was previously Barlenor, and Rek from Rekalia—a passive aggressive hint from the young woman that she was absolutely certain who the father was. Still, even after the child was born, B’nor refused to acknowledge his part in Barrek’s creation and when Rekalia persisted, became rather nasty about it. Because she’d been unable to be a Candidate, Rekalia had gone to work in the Lower Caverns, unable to return home as she had not Impressed and had ruined herself for a decent man.
Things continued on this way—with Rekalia attempting to force B’nor to actively participate in his son’s life while the dragonrider just as actively refused—for nearly four full turns. On his Turnday, Barrek’s mother would track down B’nor and shove the boy at the man before fleeing, as though this would force the dragonrider to take at least some interest in the child, who looked more than enough like the man to be his spawn. This only made things worse than they needed to be, as B’nor would ignore the child or worse, trash-talk his mother to him. As young as he was, he still remembers B’nor with little fondness. Just before Barrek’s fifth turn, B’nor applied for a transfer from Ice Stone Weyr to Rainbow Mists Weyr and disappeared without so much as a backwards glance.
Depressed and a bit defeated, Rekalia gathered her son and moved back to the Hold where she was subjected to her mother’s scolding and lectures. Though she would later regret it, Rekalia did irreparable damage to her young son by taking out her frustrations at her life situation on him, constantly ranting about his worthless dragonrider father, who the boy reminded her more and more of as time passed until finally he spent as much of his time away from the home as possible, running about in the streets and being exposed to new and radical ideas.
At the age of eight turns, his mother finally found a healthy relationship with a Healer by the name of Korven Castor and the two were married. Initially Korven agreed to adopt Barrek as his own, but the streets had all but claimed the child and though his parents changed his surname to Castor, he kept Malvois if he bothered with a surname at all. A turn later, Barrek’s first sibling was born and his competitive nature began to surface. It was difficult to get the attention of his mother unless he got into trouble, so into trouble he would get, refusing to let Korven near enough to him to even attempt to act as a father figure.
It was at the age of twelve, after the birth of his second sister, that Barrek would finally find what would be the closest he’d had to a father figure in a long time when he met a young man—older perhaps by a handful of years—by the name of Tiberax Noixay who found his disdain and vehemence of the weyr and dragonriders in general to be quite to his liking. So it was that Barrek was let in on a rather elaborate and dastardly plot at the very beginning and when Korven gained a post at the Weyr a turn later, it was only Tiberax’s urging that made the boy follow his family back to Ice Stone Weyr where rather than become a Candidate as his mother wished of him, he apprenticed to the Weyr’s Mastersmith, specializing in weapon making and repair though originally he’d learned to make and repair things like pots and pans.
After several months, and once he was settled and established as an apprentice Smith, Barrek used his time off, roping one of the dragonriders into taking him to the Hold so that he could visit friends. During said visit he was given a firelizard egg by Tiberax who didn’t elaborate about how he’d gotten the thing—not that Barrek bothered to ask—and was informed that he was to train the firelizard inside to deliver messages and given verbal instructions on how to do so. Though he wasn’t too keen on having a firelizard, Barrek accepted it and found himself saddled with a rather flirtatious and overly affectionate Black female firelizard which he aptly named Twitterpest, for both her aptitude to vocalize and the fact that she was a constant bother to him.
Upon returning to Weyr at the end of his days off, there were several questions about his new pet, but he gave a simple half-truth that he hadn’t intended for it to happen. And so, as Twit grew, Barrek trained her until she could not only deliver messages via a small tube on her leg but remain relatively quite while doing so. As the Turns passed, Barrek continued to visit the Hold regularly on his days off until his family was certain that he had a girl back at the Hold that he was wooing though in truth he was really just helping Tiberax with his plots and schemes.
It was during one such visit when he was approximately sixteen that he met the Jindarex family, two boys and a little girl, the eldest of an age with himself. He pulled them into the fold of the growing band of rebels and was mildly amused to find the little girl; Dalonia, following him about like a puppy. Of course, when Tiberax took a liking to her and sent her to be a hidden spy at the Lord Holder’s residence, much as he had sent Barrek to the Weyr, the young man’s competitiveness flared once more.
Eventually he walked the tables to become a Journeyman Smith and stayed on in the weyr and gaining a reputation among the lower cavern women for being…well, rather like his father. Using the women for his own pleasure then ignoring them. This resulted in a few weyrbrats; Barrelia, now eight turns old, and little Valenrek, now three turns old. Of course he has no active contact with the children and likely doesn’t even know they exist if he does happen to know they are his. In all, he has grudgingly found his niche in the weyr and does his best to sew seeds of mistrust and speculation, hoping that with careful cultivation, he will be able to harvest instability and chaos within the weyr, all without being suspected. It helps that he’s known to be particularly cantankerous so that people take his comments with a grain of salt even as the intended affect takes place.
Name: Upsenth
Hue: Flame (800080, 3333FF, 993300, FFCC33, CC6600, 990000)
Personality: Upsenth doesn't care about you, or what you want to say, or who you are with, or what your favorite color is. In fact, uncaring seems to be the best word to describe him. He is cold, cruel, and underhanded, the "bully" of the bunch. He likes overly mean pranks and causing chaos, but most of all, he likes fire. In fact, he's a bit of a pyromaniac, and often times will stare at unshielded fire for minutes at a time. He will chew firestone as though it was a food source, almost like he was addicted to the stuff, later in his life. There is a part of him that holds loyalty high, however, and his cause will always be the most just to himself. He feels as though anybody who disagrees with him should be chastised and corrected rather than taught a different opinion.
Description: As a Flame, multiple hues grace his hide, although for a flame, oddly enough, blue and purple are the two most prevalent. His entire lower half is completely covered by mixed, flame-like patterns of the two hottest colors, and they run into a thin band of greenish before yellow, red, and orange take over in his upper half, yellow being the third most abundant color on his hide. He is the hottest flame, by far, in appearance, with a stare and teeth to match. He is slightly large for his color.
Adult Size: 28 feet
Adoption?: Nope; NPC for plot purposes only
