I was born a mere drudge to a dark and dreary Hold, mistreated constantly and harassed even moreso. I grew up fearful of Dragonkind, save for the sweet little FireLizards that occasionally fluttered around the Hold. They seemed to love me, and I was constantly in the presence of at least one.
Finally, even with their love and affection, I had had enough, and I ran away when I was about fifteen Turns of age. But I didn't wish to be found, by anyone, so I sought refuge in the one place that no one would dare look, the former home of Dark Mists Weyr. My home was that of what I assume was a Queen or Kingrider, large and spacious, if cold and drafty. That was no concern, though, and I learned to live off the land, on my own. It wasn't too difficult. I always avoided the Hatching Grounds though, for some reason I never really was able to decipher. Just a dark, shadowed feeling that always seemed to emanate from it and made me highly nervous.
There was no reason for me NOT to, however, and one day I got over my fear and slid inside. The heat immediately hit me, causing me to nearly faint, for I was unused to it, being from a slightly cooler climate and all. However, the sensation quickly passed, and I went further inside. Almost immediately, I saw traces of the last Hatching to be held in this place, more than sixty Turns before. Eggshells still littered the Sands, and the shards of one in particular, slightly away and higher than the others, quickly caught my eye. I was drawn to this shell fragment, and yet repulsed by it at the same time, unable to help touching it. As soon as I did though, I felt malice overwhelm me, sending me to my knees on the heated sand. The ghosts of the dragonets who had died there, and had lived, seemed to be there with me, their darkness sliding insidiously through my mind.
Gasping, I managed to release the fragment, and the sensation eased somewhat. The touch of malice was still very palpable, and a highly agitated shriek had me whirling around, still on the ground. Headed towards me at high speed, shrieking murder, was a black flitt, very large, and sliced with gold slashes. Without knowing how, I recognized her immediately as an Abyss Queen, and wasn't quick enough to dodge her assault. I screamed as I felt her teeth latch onto my shoulder, sinking in deep, and shifts of her head made it obvious she was seeking my jugular. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get her off, and I whirled and tried my hardest. But she still would not let go...
I thought I was done for, and by the very breed of creature I loved so much. But suddenly, another of those agitated shrieks echoed through the cavern, and I felt my skin torn(thankfully not so close to my neck as to be life-threatening) as a beautiful Silver dragged the Abyss off of me, sinking her teeth into her fellow Queen's throat and shaking violently. I was unused to seeing a Silver act with such darkness, but it didn't take me long to realize that what I was seeing was her defense of me, a human she had no reason to trust. She and the Abyss tangled, writhed and scrabbled, but she never lost her grip, and eventually the Abyss went limp. The Silver had been gravely injured, although she was saveable, but I was not, unfortunately, given the time. I heard the fluttering of DOZENS of pairs of wings, and turning my head, I saw a whole flock of fire-lizards, in all the darkest colors, heading straight for the two Queens.
The Silver shrieked at me, fluttering weakly, but unable to fly, and I moved as if to go to her, only to be outsped by a Crimson King, who slammed into my savior and tore her throat out. The flock then descended on the two dead Queens, tearing hungrily into their bodies, and I, sickened, fled. In my mind though, an image, the last thing given me by that stunning Silver Queen. A single egg, large, and faintly glowing, and a sense that she wanted me to find and protect it. I hunted high and low, but couldn't find it, and finally resolved it had to be in the Hatching Cavern, undefended against that bloodthirsty flock...
I couldn't leave it. I HAD to find and protect her child! Determined to do so, I snuck back into the Grounds, working my way past the Crimson seemingly guarding it from further intrusion and sliding into a side cavern. Halting behind a large rock, I looked around, seeing the egg alone and undisturbed. My ears caught the faint fluttering of wings, and I cringed unconsciously. However, I had to finish what I'd begun, and I slid forwards, taking the egg from its resting place, along with some of that heated sand, putting it gently into a sack I had with me. The wings grew closer, but I refused to be rushed, not wishing to harm the egg, and once I was satisfied, I turned and snuck back out, hearing an angry shriek from the grounds as they discovered my theft.
I left the Weyr that night, sneaking out into the forest and caves, and made a new home in one near the beach, where I could be a guardian for that precious egg I had worked so hard to find and transport safely. Very soon afterwards that egg Hatched, to reveal a Silver Queen, just as her mother. I was ready for her arrival, and fed her, and she remained with me, and went by the name of Silra. She is my loyal companion, with me day in and day out, and she goes with me all over the place.
