Name: Eraviya Daskoven
Pronunciation: Er-ah-vee-ya Dahs-cove-en
Gender: Female
Age: 32
Turnday: 3042.01.23
Weyr: Ice Stone Weyr
Rank: WeyrlingMaster
Family:
Father: Eraveloz
Mother: Noraliya
Brothers: Eraliyoz (38), Noreloz (36), Raliveloz (29)
Sister: Noravela (33)
Weyrmate: None
Friends:
Pets: Brown Martinet (12)
Appearance: Eraviya is on the short side, standing probably a full two inches under five feet in height. Her skin is very pale, though her face is always ruddy from exposure to the harsh elements, and when the ruddiness is not due to the elements, it is due to her temper. She has strawberry blond hair, which someone once made the mistake of calling “beautiful” (let’s just not mention what happened to him), and eyes that are either grey-blue or pale-blue, depending on the light.
Eraviya’s typical facial expression is a slight scowl, and she goes almost everywhere in a massive coat that practically drags the ground behind her. The coat makes her appear even stouter than she really is, especially with its fur-lined collar and trim. The scowl has lined her face prematurely, and it is nearly impossible to correctly guess her age because of that. Indeed, guesstimates of her age range from the fairly accurate to the truly ridiculous, and very few people can tell which ones are accurate and which ones are ridiculous.
Personality: Eraviya is not someone who minces words. Nor does she approve of word-mincing. There are those who believe that a commander (or teacher, though it’s questionable how much she identifies with that word) should only correct in private when possible, and praise in public, so that a group learns to trust its strengths. Eraviya is not a member of that camp. She believes quite strongly that the best way to ensure that those she instructs manage to survive is to come down like an avalanche on anyone who even starts to put a toe out of line.
For all of her “break them to harness quickly” attitude, Eraviya is hardly arbitrary (though she can certainly be overbearing and more than a touch inconsiderate). She has a system of rules and related punishments for those who break the rules, and does not soften (or harden) them for anyone. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have a temper, rather that her temper is assuaged by the legitimate penalties and is due more to the fact that a rule was broken than to who exactly did the breaking.
Eraviya maintains that political issues have no importance to dragonriders other than Queenriders and those of Wingleader (or Weyrleader) rank. It is, according to her, the duty of all other dragonriders to simply behave as the Senior Weyrwoman and the Weyrleader decree. She does have her own opinions, and holds to them strongly, but if she were informed of a policy change that made one of her opinions different from “the official line” then she would follow the new procedures, even if she didn’t like or agree with them.
Continuing from her attitude towards politics, Eraviya despises insubordination. If a person is told to do a thing, than they are to do it, no questions, no comments, and certainly no complaints. This makes her “freak out” over some particular actions, such as whispering during (or even after or before) lessons or at any other time when whispering might be a way of expressing dissent. Nor does it matter what the whisperer was actually saying, either. Excuses? Don’t bother, Eraviya even has a punishment for those who attempt such justification.
History: Eraviya was the fourth born out of the five children of Eraveloz and Noraliya Daskoven, small cotholders in Icy Caverns Hold. Seemingly from the moment that she was born, she was expected to help keep things running smoothly. Her parents were very strict about appropriate behavior, as well as the duties that one owes to those in power. This attitude was passed down to all of the siblings, and is the source of Eraviya’s views on politics.
Eraviya lived an uneventful childhood, performing those duties she was assigned to the best of her abilities. Her little brother Raliveloz and her slightly older sister Noravela, on the other hand, tended to slack at their chores unless they were kept after. The position of chore reminder in chief fell, without intent, to Eraviya, who was quick to discover that it was easier to get mad the first time the chore was ignored, rather than at a later time (when the one being reminded would usually say something like “but you didn’t object last time”).
This continued throughout Eraviya’s pre-teen and early teen Turns, until a Search Rider showed up near the cothold (while Eraviya and Raliveloz were feeding the sled canines) and, much to the then 15 Turn old Eraviya’s surprise, requested that she come to the Weyr to stand as a Candidate. Naturally, she was excited and, after obtaining her parents’ permission, left for Ice Stone Weyr within the hour.
Eraviya became an unofficial assistant to the Candidate Master during the month and a half that she spent as a Candidate. Mostly, this involved the use of voice-projection to order noisy Candidates to “be silent”, though it also involved helping out those that asked for additional assistance with a lesson.
The Hatching, ironically enough, occurred on Eraviya’s 16th Turnday. For over three quarters of it, she remained unexamined by the passing dragonets, until a little Blue came bumbling over, having examined every male at least thrice. The Blue promptly came to a halt in front of Eraviya and informed her that he was “reporting for duty”.
Their Weyrling period was marked by no particular competence, except in acting as a teacher/assistant teacher. In fact, though they didn’t know it, they were tapped to become the primary Weyrling Master pair (upon attaining enough experience) by the time that they graduated to being full riders. After about 4 Turns as a Rider, Eraviya was assigned to the Weyrling Master’s duty; at the same time, her former Weyrling Master gave her a firelizard egg, saying that firelizards were invaluable assistants, it Hatched a Brown, whom Eraviya named Martinet. She has been training Weyrlings ever since.
When A’mir and Sayurith went missing, Eraviya felt as though she had somehow failed them. She immediately vowed that the next group of Weyrlings would know how to protect themselves, a goal that she set about achieving the first day after Ice Temperanth’s first Hatching.
Adoption?: NPC, so yes.
Dragon's Name: Phlegeth
Dragon’s Gender: Male
Dragon's Age: 16
Dragon's Color: Blue
Dragon's Appearance: Phlegeth is a uniform, medium Blue. If there is any shading on his hide, it is due to the lighting, not to actual color gradients. He is about 26 feet long, and is slightly on the more muscular side.
Dragon's Personality: Phlegeth is loyal. Period. He has a strong belief that those with legitimate authority should be obeyed, and considers it his job to ensure that that is done, both by himself and by others. He isn’t a tattle-tale, being far more likely to simply chew out someone for “dereliction of duty” than to report them, but he will report anything that he considers “beyond his authority to handle”.
Dragon's History: Phlegeth was Hatched towards the middle of the Hatching, and had to do a great deal of Searching before he found His. He views his position as teacher of the weyrlings as one of the most necessary, and is determined to instill respectfulness and duty into all of them. He’s doing pretty well that he’s aware of.
