Oola was the new girl at Rainbow Mists Weyr, and she knew it. She was in her room, unpacking her clothes. Under all of her clothes was a medium-sized box. She picked up the box and opened it. It was her rock collection, the one thing that reminded her that life always finds a way. She opened the lid and gazed at her unusual collection.
There were lots of rocks, with some fake gems she received from her mother here and there. She sat on her bed and dug out the first stone she ever found. It was almost in the shape of a heart, and it had flecks of brown on it. She smiled and put it back in the box. Then, she pulled out the first fake gem she ever got. It was a ruby, carved into a perfect sphere. She put it up to the light coming from the window and watched it sparkle and twinkle.
Suddenly, she heard a knock on the door. She gasped in surprise and dropped her ruby. She watched in horror as it rolled under the gap between the floor and the door. She approached the door and peeked under it. The ruby was gone, but in its place was a pair of feet. She rose to her feet and opened it. There stood a person and in the person's hand was her ruby. She smiled and asked: "Can I have my ruby back? It is very near and dear to my heart and it is my property."
Kelsira, having finished her chores early, was wondering the candidate barracks in search of something to do. True, she could go assist one of the journeymen miners, but Kel wasn't quite in the right frame of mind. She felt restless with the upcoming hatching on the horizon. In fact, it was her fear of being left standing once again that fueled her restlessness. Fear was an emotion the miner wasn't used to feeling, and so she hoped to find something to take her mind off of it.
Her aimless wandering led her past several rooms before she came across a room with a new occupant. Curious, she knocked on the door, intending to see if the newcomer needed any help. To her surprise, a ruby rolled out from under the door, stopping at her feet. Instinctively, she turned it over in her hands, evaluating it.
"Of course" she replied, handing the ruby back to its owner. "I'm Kelsira, I noticed that someone new had moved in, and wanted to say hello."
