Appearance:
The expression is always key with a person like Raevin. her expression can mean so much and those who can read it could end up being a lot safer than those who can't in their own way. Her eyes are nearly black and piercing and highly expressive. There could be a storm going on behind them. However, if someone were to notice, she thinks it'd be a bit of a miracle since, in her opinion, no one takes the time to notice how others feel or consider what they are going through. She will often have the slightest hint of a snarl on her face when she regards those who are considered to have power as they are the worst in her eyes at noticing the pains and needs of others. They have the power to do something and don't.
However, she wears a very different expression when amongst friends, family, those in pain or need, or those younger than her. Her mannerisms are gentler, kinder and far less stiff than otherwise noted.
Speaking of, her mannerisms are usually controlled, even, and show a hard exterior which she tends to dislike in others, though she will never admit that such a thing exists within herself. Her exterior can be a hard shell, but at a moment's notice it can transform into a beautiful smiling and cheerful person.
This girl with black hair and eyes that are such a dark brown as to be nearly black is not everything she appears to be. Her heart shaped face and rather wide blunt nose hide a mind that is worth getting to know. Her eyes are an exotic almond shape and her skin a lovely warm tan. She is relatively average in height, standing about 5'4".
She will most commonly wear simple tan pants and a shirt - some say that she often dresses like a boy in clothing which hides her rather shapely figure. And her short hair doesn't help any in identifying her... especially after she just cuts it as she is one who likes to cut it very short and then just let it grow out for a long while and repeat. It can be quite disconcerting fromm time to time to her mother.
Personality:
Complex is the first word that comes to mind when trying to describe Raevin. So much of her personality is set and yet, so much more of it contradicts itself. She can be a pessimist and she knows it, though she honestly calls it being a realist. After all, if you can't see the bad in life, what good is there in the good. Besides, expecting the best is just setting yourself up for disappointment in the end as life never hands you what you want it to. You have to be willing to stand up and take it with a grain of salt and move on. If you let it affect you, then you let it beat you. That is the simplistic way of looking at her philosophy on the world. Simple. And dismal as some might say. She doesn't act like the most depressing person in the world - especially not around younger children.
She has a strong character with stronger notions of grandeur and becoming the hero the world of Pern needs. Or she feels they need, rather. Her notions may be a bit off, but her motives are in the right place. She sees a need that she feels she knows the best way to fill and that the only way to do so is to fill it herself. This would mean becoming a leader - a leader who takes on the problems of those below them to help them for their own good, focused on the people that need her. But, of course, she has more failures in that respect already as a simple candidate than she would like to admit.
She is no queen seeker, but rather, wants to be one of the rare females to ride a king dragon. But whatever she Impresses, she is determined to be content and happy.
Raevin is highly intelligent and always plotting something or other. Whether if it is a way to lend some fun to her fellow Candidates - which she always claims is for selfish purposes - or if it is to get out of chores in some way. She never is just sitting idly. Her mind is always working.
Raevin is highly contemplative - attempting to take on the bigger ideas around her. These include the behaviors of people that she has observed as well as the current world politics. Though her take on these may often be bleak, there is something to be said for a girl who never stops learning and exploring ideas and bigger pictures. Don't let Raevin fool you. There is a lot going on in her head, no matter what she might say. She does not like to admit those deeper thoughts to anyone and tends towards being a quiet, steady presence in the lives of those around her.
She has the ability to be a capable leader, even if it doesn't show as she does not go out of her way to demonstrate it, but rather, it shows in another way - when she is thinking three steps ahead of every action using by what she has learned of cause and effect to direct that anticipation as well as what she has observed of human nature. Including the selfishness that she sees as inherit even in the kindest of people.
History:
Most people thought that R'vin's bloodline had died with him all those turns ago back at Dark Mists Weyr. But he had had a secret - even from Renika his beloved Weyrmate. When she had left him for the brown rider who's name he could not be bothered to remember and he had first discovered it, he had no qualms about taking another mate of his own. A woman named Elyin who was close by to where he was working and he was able to take with him most places... Other than the Weyr of course. She would have a child. A son she named Raeyin. This young man was a strong example of character. She saw him as being a leader like his father who had disappeared shortly before his birth. She kept hoping, even to her dying day, he would return. What she could not know was... he had passed on. They remaiend there, near Ice Stone Weyr in a small cothold where R'vin had conducted his business as the man Jalminar... though a few, including the woman he had made his lover knew him for who he was. And... it became relatively common knowledge as the woman aged and her son grew. Her son only to find out his father had died before he had even met him. There was an anger, a deep seated hatred there towards Dark Mists Weyr for many years. He blamed Dark Mists Weyr for his father's eventual demise. He harbored a deep seated anger for many years in his life, even after being searched at the age of 15 Turns to Ice Stone Weyr.
He stood for several turns without Impressing. However, he did Impress eventualy... to Bronze Balceth. Several turns after he had graduated his Weyrlinghood, at the age of 30 Turns, the woman he had counted his 'mate had became pregnant. His daughter was born and he named her after his father - a man who, according to those at the cothold had actually been a great man oriented towards elevating the man who was born into low status. But he named her after his father's pre-impression name... the one that few knew. He named her Raevin. Of course, though he already knew his father's ways were not good and he had, in fact, been the Weyrleader of Dark Mists Weyr... and had been a very forceful man. But evil, he didn't believe it. Evil was in the eye of the beholder. In his eyes, his father had not been evil, though Dark mists Weyr had been and it had been the death of R'vin. A lot had been done that he didn't know the specifics of and he did not care to know. He felt he persecution around him for his heritage and of his daughter. He never achieved any rank higher than wingrider and the honor of riding a very stable, regal bronze.
He hoped for more for his daughter and made frequent appearances in her life as she grew - especially when she was young. He wanted to make sure she knew that none of it was her fault. It was a secret that never should have been revealed. If it hadn't and had it not been for him speaking so openly of it as his mother's sanity faded and her own ramblings... then perhaps his child would be treated more fairly. Especially here at ISW.
There was something he was grateful for. She and he were not cast out. And they both had a chance to prove themselves. And he would teach her to do just that.
As Raevin grew, she was never lacking for the attention or love of her father, though she did have more time that she could spend with her mother as her father was more often or not busy as a bronze rider. Her mother was 10 years younger than her father, only having been twenty when she was born while her father was 30. And she knew this and was not bothered by it as her mother's holdborn parent's were. Her mother's father was only 57... As a child, she heard a lot of different things that her grandparents thought about her father - none of them positive. They were kind to her however, but the young girl disliked them for the things she heard. She was three when she first started to understand what they meant and said about her "Papa" and she was not happy about it.
In fact, it came to a point that when she was a child she hid when they came simply because she didn't want to listen to them. She would go, if her father was not on duty, hide with Balceth, who considered her a "hatchling" and watched over her as if she was his own child. Though he did know better. Balceth was a very kind and gentle bronze, at least in her eyes.
She grew up hearing tales of the past from her grandmother who would often go on about things that had long sense passed. Most people started to consider much of it the incoherent ramblings of a fading old woman. Her grandmother lived in the Weyr with them as she had no other family to care for them.
When Raevin was Ten Turns of age... Her grandmother passed away. She had been 93 Turns and had lived a very long life for most Pernese. She remembered coming in and seeing her grandmother gone... she didn't understand though, not when she was ten. Why was she so quiet... her eyes unmoving... her chest not rising or falling... Her mother saw her and scooped her up quickly, taking her out of that room and away from ehr grandmother's body... she didn't understand for about a Turn that her grandmother was actually dead and asked to see her often enough. She had liked the crazy old woman's stories about a dashing crimson rider who mysteriously disappeared... who did a lot of bad things. Someone that people didn't like and didn't like his little black sheep family for some reason. But good and evil were not clear in her grandmother's stories nor was her perception of her grandfather very clear at that time.
The stories would never fade from her memories, however, only mutate and grow more exagerated with time and she would share them with the younglings that she spent time with and her friends who were her own age. She started this when she was but thirteen. She didn't understand why some people didn't like her. But she would soon learn as she got older. The whispers followed her.
It was the way she grew up that would ultimately shape her into bieng who she was. Into standing up for those who were less fortunate and overlooked... She felt overlooked growing up - because most people didn't so easily let go of her heritage.
Some believed your family was an indicator of your fate. she wasn't sure what to believe in that respect. Her grandfather had been a king rider... her father was a king rider... but he wasn't a rider like her grandfather, though he was standing up for those of "lesser" rank quite regularly when he saw fit. She admired that and learned to imitate it by the time she was 13 Turns. Which was the same time she started standing for hatchings. It started to feel repetitive, annoyingly so. So she started to spend a lot of time thinking, pondering... and finding things that needed to be dealt with. Of course, her trying to deal with them, often she would get in trouble for trying.
And so... a life of contemplation and contradiction has become hers over the Turns. But those moments of contemplation are not ones that she would trade for the world, even when in her boredom, she seeks out trouble all over again. She believes she isn't going to be able to make a difference until she is a rider and, so, she eagerly awaits the next hatching. Impressed at ISW (full update to come)

Name: Yanth
Hue: Black/White (000000, CCCCCC)
Personality: Yanth does not take no for an answer. What he wants, he strives to obtain; his goals, once set, will never be removed until he reaches them. Passion in every bit of his life drives him to take what he deserves, for he certainly will deserve it. He is quick to temper however very controlling of it, and capable of using his anger in battle. He is balanced by his willingness to help others in need, yet cares not for rules imposed upon him by those seeking to hold him back. He is dedicated and sometimes can come off as abrasive, but he always means well in the end.
Description: Two colors grace his hide, but the most noticeable is the deep, dark black on his right-hand side. It envelopes him, consuming most of his hide including the last few feet of his tail, which are only flecked with white. It is as though somebody had drawn a line down the middle of him, then gotten angry and smeared the black over the white, it spirals in wisps coming over his spinal ridges, pouring onto his left shoulder and mixing with the contrasted color. His right wing is entirely black, his left entirely white, the stark opposite of his sister. A spot of bright white runs along the right side of his muzzle, contrasting his face into two distinct halves. He is of average size for a black.
