74.11.16 | Late-afternoon | the dining hall and kitchen area
Finally, lessons were over for the day. The Weyrlings were all headed to the Dining Hall, since the WeyrlingMaster insisted that they all eat this one meal together as a group. Of course, that also meant that T’vax couldn’t sit with Davquil for this meal, because, “boys on that side, and girls on this one”. Of course, he was so hungry by this time that it normally didn’t matter. However, they’d been given a massive collection of homework assignments from their dragon care class, and, since WeyrlingMaster Eraviya made them all stay put until the meal was officially over (which took far longer than it did for T’vax to bolt down food), he’d brought the homework, and a much used piece of paper, along for company.
It had been going rather well, until he got stuck on one of the problems. He stared at it for awhile, debating whether he should ask one of the older dragons what the answer might be, but then, the last time he’d done that, WeyrlingMaster Eraviya had really been mad, so…
“Hey L’ban,” he said, idly flipping his belt knife around like a toy and turning to the boy, slightly older than him, who was closest at the current moment. “Have you figured this problem out yet?”
Meal time, with a large group of people. Definitely not L'ban's favorite part of being a Weyrling. And with everyone sitting next to another Weyrling, there was bound to be someone wanting to have a discussion of sorts. He was eating in his favored silence for most of his meal. Next to him, a boy was working on the nights work. L'ban made note to do the work later, when he was back in his quarters. Right now, all he wanted to do was eat his meal and eat it in silence.
Though, that silence was quickly disrupted. Just then the boy turned to him. He asked a question, but it took a second for L'ban to register what the question was, and that it was directed at him and not someone behind him.
"Oh, uh, what problem are you on T'vax?" He asked, turning to look at his class mate.

“It’s the fourth one,” T’vax said, stabbing the knife point down into the table as a means to hold it still. He pulled the paper over slightly, so that it was in between him and L’ban. “I just can’t remember what exactly WeyrlingMaster Eraviya said to do in those circumstances, and, well, the whole problem is based on that.” Of course, it went without saying that the next two problems were based on the answer to the fourth one.
Yet more food came out, as the grown riders filtered in for early dinner. Naturally, since the Weyrlings technically weren’t done with their meal, and there was no way that WeyrlingMaster Eraviya would let them leave while that was the case, this meant that the Dining Hall felt even more crowded. “Well, this is going to make it easier to focus,” T’vax commented sarcastically, working his belt knife back and forth, lengthening the small hole it had made in the table. He glanced back at the fourth problem, as though hoping that the momentary diversion of his attention would result in it being easier. It didn’t. The question and description was still the same.
Who would be dumb enough to fly straight into the side of a mountain? T’vax wondered. and why are we assuming that the rider would be aware enough to do anything about the damage done to the dragon.
