Appearance: Barlow is a compact man, coming in at a height of 5’4”. He is fairly skinny, and is more built for speed then strength. He has very dark, brown eyes that are always examining his surroundings, and in general is aware of what’s going on. His hair is very dark, occasionally when lit correctly seems to have a blue sheen to it. He likes to call it midnight hair, and thinks it might be part of the reason for his stealthy nature. His hair is cut short enough that it won’t get in the way but still long enough that it falls flat on his head rather than not. Additionally, his hands are remarkable slender.
When he is wearing clothes for the every day, he likes to wear things that are comfortable. A part of that is wearing well-worn breeches and leather boots are good for exploring, which he will generally do. He almost always has a pouch on his belt, which usually doesn’t contain more than a pair of gloves he likes using when he needs to climb something. Generally by the end of the day he will have a pouch full of interesting things he has found, if he had gone exploring. Often he will wear long sleeves if it’s a little cold, since he responds to cold weather more than others. He isn’t especially particular about staying clean, so he usually has a layer of dust and dirt on him during the day. He does prefer to keep his clothes clean, which is reflected in the neatness which is in his dwelling.
Personality: It isn’t a shy nature that allows Barlow to be comfortable in silence. If he doesn’t have something to contribute, he won’t talk. He will participate in idle chatter when pressed, but prefers more meaningful conversation. He is always willing to help others out and had a bad habit of not asking people if he can help, just helping out where he sees a need. He is friendly enough, introducing himself if he sees someone who might be interesting to talk to. However it’s relatively arbitrary who he’ll find interesting, so he doesn’t have a huge circle of friends.
One of Barlow’s most complicated personality traits is his desire to sneak about. He’s not a fan of being contained, especially if it is late and he isn’t tired. Strictly speaking, he doesn’t like to break rules, but when he is up late at night and isn’t tired one bit, there are times he can’t resist sneaking out to enjoy the night air. Especially as a young child, this got him into trouble, though he doesn’t consider what he did particularly troublesome. In theory he has the ability to steal things, but he finds the idea repulsive. If given a good reason to, he might sneak for others or if he really is convinced the reason is good. Balancing his ideals with his abilities is hard, especially when others attempt to convince him otherwise. He will try to keep everything in order, but if he should stray off the path, he might have a hard time living with himself.
He’s dedicated when he studies, and dragons are his forte. He has the talent to help heal dragons, but his specialty is more in deeper questions. He might seem reserved, but he has grand designs on becoming a weyrhealer for Rainbow Mists.
Barlow isn’t afraid to speak up for what’s right in his eyes, but gets frustrated when others aren’t being logical in their arguments. He doesn’t like the words ‘because I say so’, and can easily become frustrated when they are used. When he needs time to himself sneaking away to someplace with a great view is how he deals with things, and sorts things quickly.
History: Barlow was born to a rider pair, both of whom were Weyrborn as well. None of his direct family members had particularly large dragons, but none the less he grew up with his Mother’s Blue and his Father’s White as constant sources of wonder. He could see from the time he was very young the impact that having a dragon had on a person, being surrounded by his parents and their friends who were riders. So he began to think that was how things should be. He should go and impress a dragon too. He would be just like his parents who each have a life partner of their own. However, he was introduced to his grandmother, who, he came to realize, had lived her whole life at a Weyr and had no dragon select her. Like him, she had parent who were riders, but she had been left standing. Understanding this was one of the most defining moments for him. It gave him a dose of reality, but at the same time it was neither naiveté nor delusion that had him decide he would give his all to impressing a dragon. It was something he would only realize after he turned thirteen. He didn’t know how else he could belong.
As he grew and befriended some of the other children in the Weyr, he realized he stayed rather short compared to his compatriots. He was better at hide and seek, and was quick with his hands. This lead to several child escapades, which eventually lead to him getting caught and a long talk with his parents. They stressed the importance of not stealing (which he had been caught doing on a dare) and in general the impact his actions on others. Understanding the implications, Barlow worked to fix his habits, though it took time. As a replacement he came up with a fun game with his friends that they latched onto immediately. One of his friends would write a note, and challenge Barlow to either put the note in an odd location or into another friend’s pocket. It became something of a fad for a bit, but out of his friend Barlow remained the best at it.
When he turned twelve, his parent presented him with the idea of training to be a dragonhealer. They felt that he would enjoy having something to do that would keep his mind and hands busy, since they saw his more sneaky abilities to be signs of boredom. He accepted, pleased to be learning about dragons even if he couldn’t be considered a candidate yet. The turn of classes were interesting, but didn’t scratch the particular itch of his desire to stand for a clutch. Eventually the time arrived.
When he turned thirteen, he became eligible to stand, which he was happy to do. However, he was not to impress at his first hatching. Nor the second, nor the third and so on. As he was passed over for other candidates, he didn’t really resent the other candidates, or the dragons for passing him up. He found himself grateful for the trade he had been pushed into. He didn’t feel more useless then the other candidates, and could continue training and at least working toward something. During this time he started having restless nights, and slipping out to think things over and get some air. He began to find out that practicing sleight of hand and just ‘being sneaky’ was harder as he got older, but when he practiced it, was extremely good at giving himself something to do that didn’t involve a lot of reading. It was a lot of by rote exercise, and it took his mind off things. He’d always been good at it, but got devilishly clever with it as the turns went by. It has been three turns since he became a candidate, and he doesn’t show either resentment or impatience. Especially with the past hatching, he would rather let time show what he might become. He wouldn’t wish the fate of the momentary Weyrling upon himself. In the meantime, he can hone his various skills, and let himself become even more underestimated. After all, that will just mean the payoff will be all the sweeter.
Finally at Rainbow Orikeath's hatching he impressed to Neon Purple Hailreth and impressed, becoming B'ow. Having such a... bright dragon has thrown him for a loop, but he thought up a few plans to get around that. More importantly, an Azure has hatched and he has to learn all he can about it, and tangentially about its rider.
He settled on trying to unravel the so called 'Curse of the Azures'. Interviewing people who knew the former Azure rider was a start, but to further his research, he arranged to transfer to Waterfall Valley Weyr after his graduation. Only where the Azure first reappeared might he find the answers he sought. And going to walk the tables as a Journeyman Dragonhealer. B'ow was never one for slowing down, even for a moment.
Adoption?: Rather not.
Dragon's Name: Hailreth
Dragon’s Gender: Male
Dragon's Age: 3 turns (Born 75.09.02)
Dragon's Color: Neon Purple
Dragon's Appearance: A rather bright dragon, Hailreth is a Neon Purple and therefore not something that can be easily missed. He has tapped out at a nice 31 feet a good size for his color.
Dragon's Personality:Hailreth is definitely not a dragon who is ever down in the dumps. He is an intelligent, shrewd and generally happy dragon with a propensity for making conversation happen. He isn't going to be okay with sitting around, but neither is he going to be okay with completely goofing off. He has to look after everyone and he has to be certain that each one is getting the proper care. He is extremely driven and knows he can achieve great things with B'ow by his side. As long as his rider is with him, he will have no fear and he is always wanting to and willing to learn. This isn't to say that he can't lose focus - because he does regularly enough. He also just enjoys having fun and playing and making friends.
Dragon's History: Born to Rainbow Orikeath and Cloud Quiorith, Hailreth instantly took to B'ow's lessons. He still has a lot to learn but he learns quick and has no doubt that soon enough he will be on to much more tricky material. The pair are good at visualizing, so they trade specs B'ow getting down the creative dragon's ideas.
