Name: Avril (Desepere) Hillborn
Pronunciation: Ah-vril (Deh-she-per-eh)
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Turnday: 7049.03.09
Weyr: Rainbow Mists Weyr
Rank: Rider
Family:
Great-Grandfather: Lord Raidon of Rolling Hills Hold
Grandfather: Lord Orai
Mother: Loraisa
Father T’or of Crimson Birath
Weyrmate: N/A
Friends: Mairon of Black (m) Sauth
Pets:
Firelizards: Aurora (f) Alaminya (3), black-haze Crimson Mindicartos (3), Black-Grey (m) Mordicant (5), Neon Abyss Uluara (8), Queen Amentyava (8), Rare Goldarkos (7), Uncommon Calaviya (6), Common Qalasm (6).
Other: cream Canine (f) Werna (4), tabby Feline (m) Ferum (7), chestnut Runnerbeast (m) Tavaknorhtus (11), Trained bird Emularitch (2)
Appearance: Avril is rather short for a guy, standing only about 5’7” including the extra half-inch or so from his loosely curled midnight black hair. His skin is naturally tan, even when he’s been inside a lot, which is exceptionally rare. He habitually wears black clothing, but if he’s dressing up for some reason, he prefers very dark blue, because it calls out the bluish highlight in his hair and likewise calls attention to his exceptionally dark blue eyes. He typically wears gloves to cover the x-shaped tattoos on the web between thumb and forefinger, one on each hand, which were put there after he got caught stealing, and he always wears long-sleeved tunics to hide the scars on his back, remnants of old beatings. He can’t do anything about the scar that runs diagonally across his face, from just above his right eye to the left corner of his mouth, however, nor about the crescent-moon shaped one on his left cheek.
Personality: Upon first meeting Avril, most people notice how quiet and controlled he is; never saying more than the bare minimum, never moving unless it is needful, and only moving the exact amount necessary to accomplish the goal. However, there is nothing calm or serene about this behavior. Rather, it is as though one is watching a guard-canine or WatchWher resting on duty, a calm veneer over an ability, or even sometimes a desire, to cause harm. That is to say, he isn’t one of those people who never get angry, but one of those who can withhold from the acting on anger, at least until the right moment. He refuses to admit it, even to himself, when he is afraid, masking it as anger or, in rare cases, respect.
Avril has a serious problem with those in authority, seeing most of them as selfish, self-serving twits who never bother to enforce the rules and laws fairly. He does have enough of a sense of proper behavior that he will obey at least the letter of commands he is given, but he will frequently attempt to twist them as far as possible within that frame, and sees performing an act which is forbidden (but that he has not directly been told not to do) without bothering to mention the fact to be the epitome of cleverness and intelligence. He will likewise deliver snide and sarcastic comments about his superiors both within and outside their hearing.
On the other hand, those superiors that he decides to trust would have to work hard to find a more loyal proponent. Not that he stops mocking them (although it does take on a much more friendly tone), but that he will actively attempt to seek out ways to further their goals, even at considerable risk/expense to himself and his own goals. Also, while he may keep mocking, he will stop anyone else from doing so, unless it is clearly friendly banter.
Avril has a soft spot for animals, frequently getting himself in trouble for trying to protect them.
History: Avril was conceived when his mother, the daughter of a minor lord holder, who was himself the son of Lord Raidon of Rolling Hills Hold, chanced to encounter an old friend, now T’or of Crimson Birath, who had been Searched to Sky Mountain Weyr. She spent quite a lot of time with him, much to her parents’ dismay and anger, and she was hoping to convince him to help her persuade her parents to let them marry when he bid her farewell, told her that “it had been nice”, and returned to the Weyr, just in time to become Weyrleader.
Not even four months after T’or left, Avril entered the world. His mother called him Desepere Hillborn, and spent as little time around him as possible. She sent him to go live with a distant cousin at High Reaches when he wasn’t more than two Turns old, who then sent him to live with yet another cousin, who repeated the process. None of them were even remotely kind to the unwanted child, who quickly learned to both hate and avoid them. At five Turns old, Avril (as he’d come to be called at some point during all those transfers) stayed with a couple that he called “Aunt Glaviyara and Uncle Belarno” but in truth, they were the only mother and father that he even really had, and their death a Turn later was devastating to the boy, who not long thereafter was living on his own, wherever he could find shelter. Since no one was willing to pay to provide for “that useless kid”, he learned a lot about stealing as he grew older, becoming very good at picking pockets, though this meant that he had some very painful brushes with guards over the Turns, from which he came away with several scars.
By the time he was sixteen, Avril had the x’s tattooed on both hands, and was in such constant trouble with the guards that he decided to skip town. He roamed around for awhile, stealing as needed to support himself, working on those rare occasions where he could get fair pay. He stayed away from Weyrs, having frequently heard voices in his head whenever he was near them, but he found he was very good at handling flitts, so he often posed as a flitt trainer, and as a consequence, wound up with eight firelizards over the course of as many turns. So it happened that he ended up at Fort Weyr just in time for a Hatching. Midway through that Hatching, he found himself staring out onto the Sands, into the eyes of a wondrous Midnight dragon, one Taqaglaurunth.
Weyrling training was a nightmare for the two, for no matter how Taqaglaurunth tried to rein Avril in, the young Rider insisted on thwarting any and all attempts of the WeyrlingMaster to assert dominance. It was during this time that he acquired his other pets, confiscating them from classmates who weren’t caring for them properly. Oddly enough, it was one of his classmates that he found easiest to obey, Mairon of Black Sauth, so when Mairon, who had family at Cliffside, asked to be transferred to RMW upon graduating from Weyrling training, Avril managed to come along.
Adoption?: Yes
Dragon's Name: Taqaglaurunth (Tah-kah-glar-runth)
Dragon’s Gender: Male
Dragon's Age: 2
Dragon's Color: Midnight
Dragon's Appearance: Taqaglaurunth is, like his rider, on the small side (at only 26 feet in length).
Dragon's Personality: Taqaglaurunth is exceptionally secretive and even less talkative than his Rider. He disagrees with his Avril about the fundamental nature of authority, but has decided to leave his Rider’s re-training in such matters to Mairon. Despite a respect for authority that his rider doesn’t understand, Taqaglaurunth truly enjoys being sneaky, and so long as they aren’t actually disobeying authority…
Dragon's History: Taqaglaurunth was hatched from a small clutch at Fort. He was in the upper third of his class as far as skill goes, but was in the bottom third overall, due to the black marks heaped on his rider.
