Appearance:
Andilan would be considered a very attractive young man with a well built form with broad shoulders, strong back, but there is a hardness in him that gives him a dangerous air. He is not warm and inviting but very resentful and hostile to all of those around him. His blue eyes are often described as steely and his features are set in a deep scowl. If circumstances had been different in his past then no doubt he would have a warm smile and a hearty laugh but as it stands right now, the ability to smile is not within him.
What scars are visible are upon his arms with some being shallower then others. However, the worst scars are upon his back where roping scars are laid on top of each other by a whips touch. They stand out sharply in contrast to his sun baked skin. Other scars decorate his ribs and upper torso and are souvenirs of past skirmishes. He takes time every day to stretch so that the scars do not stiffen.
Andilan is not considered short and stands slightly taller then average at about 5'11. A layer of stubble continuously covers his face save for a small scar on the end of his chin leaving him with a rugged edge. What hair he keeps is clipped close to his scalp though if he ever allowed it to grow long enough the people would see the dark honey blonde tone that his tresses are. He takes little time to improve his appearance and has a very 'do not care' appearance just short of appearing unkempt. His imposing figure is often situated as far away from people as possible, picking a corner to sit and stew in as opposed to being out in the open and attempting to widen his nonexistent social circle.
Personality:
Andilan appears emotionally closed off but it is not completely true. The young man is very emotional but many of those emotions are highly negative and destructive to both himself and those surrounding him. To survive, he had to create a facade, a series of impenetrable walls, in order to protect himself or what remained of his sanity during those hard Turns. He in turn became a closed off person, unable to express any other emotions besides those needed in order to survive. Anger and hate are, and remain to be, the easiest to come by while other simple things like knowing how to be happy fell to the waste side.
The young man keeps everyone, male and female alike, at a long arm's length. Its not a hard thing to do considering his hostile tendencies and abrasive personality. It leaves others with a poor opinion of him and he makes no effort to correct them. He is often mean and nasty to others to keep them away though he often appears more tolerant of children and animals and will make an effort to restrain his ire.
He is a hard worker when he wants to be. However, oppressive authority will now ensure that Dilan will not do anything that they say. All brakes will be employed and he will dig in his heels to the point of all out refusal which can be problematic. He sees a clear difference between being ordered to do something compared to being asked. Dilan will be more keen to doing something if a person he likes asks him, however, if the person comes off as abrasive then a switch is flipped and nothing will come of it. It stems from Turns of being forced to work with his captors and now that his life is not under threat if he does not do work then he takes what freedom he has and runs with it.
Skills / Weaknesses:
-Knows how to sail a ship but has no desire to set on one any more at this point
-Dilan is ambidextrous but is mostly right hand dominant
History:
Andilan was born to a young couple that had only been together for no more then a Turn after their marriage. His father was a tradesman and earned his living by moving from Hold to hold, bartering and selling the wares that he collected. It was a rough life and certainly not an easy existence. The young boy grew up in the back of their family's wagon as they moved from place to place. It was only when Aline grew heavy with their second child did they stop and finally settle down at a small Hold as life on the road became too hard an increasingly difficult pregnancy.
When Saline was born, she was very weak, and there were complications. Aline suffered severe bleeding and it was an incredibly slow recovery afterwards. It would be many weeks before she would be strong enough to walk the entire length of the courtyard. Saline, on the other hand, would be a true test. She was very small and the Healers feared for her. With winter approaching, infant mortality was high, especially for those who were not strong enough to handle the cold temperatures. Andilan was almost twelve Turns of age when Saline was birthed and he was probably one of the first to volunteer to watch Saline as Aline recovered.
Andilan did his best to appear irked concerning his sister's weak disposition but rarely would another tend to her before him. He was a young boy, not yet even beginning to fill the shoes of a man, and so he took his duties seriously. There would be days at a time where he would tend to Saline, both feeding and cradling her when she cried. His father was almost nonexistent at this point, choosing to travel and practice his trade while leaving his family to their own devices.
It was not widely known that Demaris gambled and so his mounting debt was easy to hide from his family in amongst his travels. However, it wasn't the debts that created so much of a problem, then it was who he borrowed the money from. Aline knew that something was wrong when Demaris came home from one trip with terrible bruises upon his face. The story was that the caravan had been ambushed by pirates but she could see that there was something off in his eyes. He would not meet her gaze and it was only after her pressing that he had admitted that his injuries resulted from a mugging in an attempted shake down....that the debt that he had accumulated was so large that he had little hope of making the payments.
Aline cursed him and his selfishness before throwing him out of their home. The people of the Hold was all too eager to chase him off for fear of his delinquency would bring hardship in to their walls. It wasn't until that next Spring that Andlian saw his father again outside of the Hold during a trip to the market. Age had weighed upon his face like Dilan had never seen before and he went to comfort his father with little to no hesitation. It was ultimately a mistake.
Dilan was unprepared for the hands that grabbed him as he embraced his father. He fought, kicking and screaming, but a blow to the soft of his stomach winded him and stilled his thrashings. Those strong hands dragged him from the market place and from his father who did not even raise his gaze as a small bag of money passed between hands. In a single act of desperation, Demaris sold his son in to slavery to pay off his debtors. The whirlwind of those next few days was dizzying to a point of where Dilan lost count of how many hands he passed between until he reached his final destination.
The feel of the ocean beneath the boards of his feet and the smell of the ocean was foreign to him as was the harsh hand of his overseers. As a young and able bodied boy, he was a prime candidate for climbing quickly through the rigging. His refusal earned him countless beatings and the kiss of a whip upon his shoulder when he didn't move fast enough for the captain's satisfaction. He was not alone in his plight and was one of several captives though they had not all be gathered by the same means.
It was nearly six years of slavery before Dilan would be free.
Several escape attempts had labeled Dilan as a flight risk early on. Any suspected escape attempt was met with severe beatings by both hand, foot, and whip alike. After one beating left him clinging to life did Dilan's attempts subsided for a time. The pirates never trusted him, however, and often kept him shackled on the rowing teams. It wasn't until a severe storm almost destroyed the ship did Dilan see an escape route and took it without a breath's hesitation.
A bad storm swept through and threw the ship on to a shallow reef and cracked the hull badly. With water rushing in Dilan managed to force his manacle free of its bolting and fought his way up to the top deck before jumping free of the ship and in to the rushing water. Swift currents carried him away easily in to deeper water and away from the ship but also the shoreline he so desperately fought towards. Ultimately the surf tired him until he could no longer keep his head above water. A passing piece of driftwood saved his life and he clung through it as the storm raged on, ultimately losing consciousness when the rest of his strength left him as the storm ebbed. A passing fishing ship pulled him half-drowned from the water. It would be several days more before Andilan awoke.

***I do not want to specify ranks. That's not how I roll because I do not want to appear a rank hunter. Andilan needs a strong lifepartner and so I'll leave the color and design up to you. The partner needs to be strong enough to withstand Andilan's initially abrasive attitude and point him in the right direction, to be the voice of reason within Andilan's head to counter all that he's been through and to break down the walls that he has built up.

Preferred Colors | ** See below note** | Why do you think these colors fit? N/a |
