Day after the Hatching
Midday
Hedara's Room
Hedara sat, her eyes narrowed and staring outside. Her back was straight, and she stared. The gaze was full of steel, as she looked out toward the sky. Ivy was hiding behind Temperanth out on her ledge, afraid to go near. Hedara often looked like this, but Ivy and Temperanth could taste the hate in the air, the fury restrained. She was almost murderous right now. The Ice Queen was diverting every person she could to one of the other Weyrleaders or fielding the requests herself. Temperanth didn’t quite understand what might set Hedara off here, she had been getting more and more unstable as far her mood went. But she never showed it. That was Hedara, a cold gaze and a fury in her heart. Ice holding fire. Ivy huddled against the Ice, looking for something warm. Temperanth wished she could give Ivy more then she had right now. She loved the little cousin, but it was not a good day. She went and nosed the flitter, trying to give her strength. Everyone needed a little, after all that had happened.
The Ice suddenly snapped her head up and turned to Hedara, her eyes whirling rapidly. She didn’t like what Hedara was thinking.
No! You must not think such things.
“I shall do as I please.” Hate dripped from every word. The only solace Temperanth had was that it was not directed at her, unlike the words.
You can’t possibly live without relying on people.
“I will. Humans have proved themselves worthless time and time again. I will let them rely on each other and be disappointed every time. I care not for their emotional states. They may be to be protected but they can just forget about getting my sympathy ever again.”
You are being rash. Breathe. Calm down. If you just think about it-
“I’M DONE THINKING ABOUT THEM!” Hedara didn’t shout without reason, at least never that Temperanth had seen. Her voice was usually icy but now it had fire in it. She spat in front of her, then strode over to her desk. “We will have to take great care in this. Perhaps we can give everyone what they want. Not that they deserve it.” There was a kind of madness there, Temperanth was frightened of it. The Ice wanted to flee but this was Hedara. Tentatively she tried to feel out the woman’s mind as she started writing on a piece of parchment, looking like an arsonist watching their work. Was this still the same person she had looked at and said that they were now bound? She was unsure. With Hedara in this state it was hard to tell. The Ice stood where she was, looking lost. Hedara continued to scribble. How could she see how this decision had affected her? Ivy tried to get closer to Temperanth, even though the Green was already touching the Queen dragon. It momentarily caught Temperanth’s attention. Maybe, there was one thing she had to check. With a glance around she came closer to Hedara, slightly upsetting Ivy.
Hedara. The blond woman looked up, getting the tone from Temperanth of sadness and uncertainty. You said before that you would never do anything where everyone else could see it, but we are alone. Everyone is scared and I want just a little… Temperanth trailed off, but she saw Hedara step away from the desk and walk over to the dragon.
Hedara had said before, that she would never show affection to anyone in public, regardless of who they were. That included Temperanth and Ivy. Shards, she hardly touched either of them in any way in public. There were times though. After coming back, after all that with A’mir and Sayurith’s cruel images Hedara had returned to her room and buried her face in the blue hide of Temperanth as she cried the rest of the night. She hardly had made a sound though, and when she got up in the morning, she was all steel and straight face again. So there was still a pause, before she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around the dragon’s snout and touched foreheads with her. They were both hurting in their own way, what with a long series of vile acts. So Hedara could do this, but only while alone.
Temperanth took some hope in that. As Ivy came out flying, desperate to get into this bout of hugging, Hedara accepted the presence of both of her mindmates comfortably. There was something horrible about what had happened here though. Hedara might still love her dragon and her firelizard, very deeply, but something had changed. For the rest of the world, it didn’t look like there was any love to give. Temperanth’s sorrow was starting to get the better of her, but she only let her eyes show it. She didn’t know what to do. Hedara seemed to have an idea, but that wasn’t a good sign. However, she had to let this moment stand. Maybe, regardless of everything going on, she could draw strength from this. If they could all draw strength from each other, maybe they could all stand taller from now on, and bear the storm. However, Temperanth could not help but silently mourn for what change has come, only hoping that the future could wash it away.
