Name: Lesti Nalik
Pronunciation: (Lehs-Tee Nah-LEEk)
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Turnday: 3051.09.03
Weyr: Rainbow Mists Weyr
Rank: LifeWing Rider
Family:
Marith Nalik- Mother, Net mender
Karth Nalik- Father, Fisher.
Aaliyah Nalik- Sister (Year younger), Harper Apprentice
Weyrmate: N/A
Friends:
Pets: Spark Neon Black-Blue Flitter
Appearance:
Lesti is usually easy to spot with her flaming copper hair which she says is her healer beacon so if someone is in need of a LifeWing pair she is always easy to find. She has searching green eyes that in different light will darken or lighten much like Klesh's feathers. Her skin in not pale nor over tanned, a simple tone in between. Lesti's figure is petite, muscular but not without its feminine curves. She stands at around a shorter 5 feet, which misleads some from her incredible will and fiery temper. Only once.
She wears odd accessories on her person such as a feather ear cuff that she made from Klesh's feathers by cutting the enormous feathers down to size. She is hardly ever seen without wearing it the only time is if she was called from bed for an emergency and had no time to dress properly. She enjoys feeling the comfort of Klesh's feathers brushing against her neck and it can cool her mind or give her strength whenever Klesh isn't around to do so herself. Even though it would seem it could it doesn't get in the way at all when healing a patient. She has a sturdy leather pouch belt that holds all sorts of dried herbs, random vials of who knows what (she does of course, hopefully...), and a "to go" mortar and pestle. Even though she specializes in dragon healing with Klesh that doesn't mean she can't patch up some cuts and make a killer brew for aches and pains.
Personality:
Lesti is not the nicest healer in the infirmary. If your looking for a bandage for a scrape and a kind word to send you on your way with a gentle warning for more caution you need to find your mother. You don't want a speech about how you're wasting supplies. If you can get a word out of her in the first place. Its either all or nothing with her and most can't decide which is worse. In spite of this or because of it she has a level head and will always see something as it is and never exaggerate. She isn't vain in her appearance but can be flashy and eccentric with her odd accessories that she wears and her hair lends to the flashiness with its bright copper red shimmering in the sun. Her flashing green eyes are quick to pick up even the slightest of details and place them where they belong a necessary skill in diagnosing patients.
Apart from the annoyed healer is a sharp eyed woman who is opportunistic and an opportunity to a higher position is never lost on her. Deception is her game and hardly anyone knows her actual position on anything other than mewling patients, and if asked she dodges the question so neatly most don't even notice she dodged it in the first place. Backed with this is a very strong will that will get her far in whatever she sets her sights to achieving.
History:
Lesti was born and raised in Cliffside Sea Hold, blasted with the winds of the ocean. Her family was very close to the ocean her father a fisher and her mother a net mender. Aaliyah, her younger sister by a year, and Lesti would tromp all over the cliffs during their free time when not working helping with their mothers net mending. During these expeditions they found many cool hideouts hidden among the cliffs but a favorite of Lesti's was not to far from the Hold but well out of anyone's normal marching grounds. A steep slope led the way down to the water and flat smooth rocks that spread out into the sea for a ways before dropping deeper past the waves. Planks of wood attached together form a walkway out over the unusually calm water till they felt completely surrounded by the power sea and the winds. Whenever Lesti felt the need to get out, or a situation just got to stressful to deal with alone she would come to this place and just think, letting the waves calm her and bring things into better focus till she could see just what it was that needed to be done. When not exploring the sisters would help their mother mend nets, a job they did since they could hold the mending materials. This constant work has left Lesti's hands strong but dexterous. As she grew older Lesti showed a proficiency for healing around the family mending cuts made from filleting fish and sores from salt infused rope.
While out exploring the beach side one day a commotion caught their eyes and running over to see and found tunnel snakes destroying a nest, probably a greens since there was no adults around to try and protect the nest. They managed to save three of the eggs which they took home and convinced their parents of the usefulness that a flitter would be. Between mending nets, helping healers, and other chores the sisters hardly left the eggs by their hearth. The time came in the middle of a particularly scorching day when the family was enjoying the cool of the house and taking a light meal. The pot on the hearth was steady as ever but one of the eggs had started to move. The calm afternoon was over at this new development and after a few hurried moments of cutting fresh fish into morsels small enough for a flitt they gathered round anxiously watching along with a few of the local Flitters that appeared for the hatching. The second egg sensed its sibling and began to move. The first one hatched to awed gasps as it was a black flitt but blue as well, but such a bright color of blue it seemed impossible to call it just that and it was decided it must be one of the rare neon colors. He just sat there and peered intently at each of them with an inquisitive stare. At this time the second egg hatched and green flopped out onto the sands. Looking back at his sister the neon flitt took one last look at each of them and went over to Lesti chomping on the fish that she offered. The green incouraged by her brother wobbled strait to Aaliyah and did the same. The third egg sadly never hatched or showed any life.
Her sister had an insatiable love for books and apprenticed as a scribe to one of the local Harper's in Clifside. At 18 Lesti was searched for Lifewing candidacy and a few months later linked with Klesh, a Magpie Lifewing. Showing an interest for dragons in their basic training they pursued that as their area of expertise and trained further in dragon health. After a fatal incident with a weyrling pair Lesti and Klesh dove into their studies with enormous vigor accepting nothing but perfection in their lessons.
Adoption?: NPC only
LifeWing's Name: Klesh
LifeWing's Gender: Female
LifeWing's Age: 5 years
LifeWing's Species: Black-Billed Magpie
LifeWing's Appearance:
Klesh is a black and white lifewing on the smaller size, most of her body length is made up of her tail. Over half of it. Her head, chest, and back is a solid shiny black, along with her legs and upper tail. The rest is a pure white contrasting strongly with the black. Klesh's tail, secondaries and coverts are an iridescent shade of black that glimmers between blue and green. Her primaries are the stark white but outlined in the deep black. Klesh's eyes are bright and not much misses her sharp gaze.
LifeWing's Personality:
Klesh is the stronger of the pair fuller determined to become the best LifeWing healer of dragons in the Aerie. She pushes Lesti to her limits when they train and the pairs major weakness is knowing when to stop healing for their own good. After the death of the weyrling pair Lesti became as determined as Klesh and the pair works endlessly together learning everything they can and spend much of their time in the Weyr learning about the dragons and picking up all they can about their song. Klesh was the one when she was first introduced to Lesti's family that saw the potential in Aaliyah's profession as a Harper. As such she had access and time to go through countless documents and find anything of use for the LifeWing pair that would help them in any way. Aaliyah loves to delve into the scrolls for her elder sister and the bird. Klesh has been more of the leader but as Lesti grows and matures the leadership is evening out between the two making them that much stronger.
LifeWing's History:
When Klesh Linked to Lesti she was nothing but a ball of slate grey fuzz that after hatching and getting those horrid egg shells off of herself stalked up to Lesti and after peering into her with her sharp eyes finally spoke saying...
You will go far with your Klesh, but you must be willing to get there with our own blood and tears. Are you willing to shed those, and a lot of them with me?
After a steady eyed heart thumping agreement they worked to do just that. After some food and a good long rest of course.
A day 4 years ago...
She would never forget that day. It was one of those idyllic days where the oppressive humidity had receded and replaced with a crisp air that greatly contrasted with what had preceded it. Billowing thunderheads sulked on the skyline far away that there was no threat of rain for that day. Instead a sharp breeze chilled strait through to the bone. The cold season in the Southern Continent was nothing like in the North but to those that lived there it could get pretty chilly at times.
Lesti pulled her jacket closer to herself against the biting wind and hurried to her aerie. Klesh was waiting for her, perched on the ledge facing into the wind her feathers plastered to her sleek body. Wings half open and eyes half closed she was enjoying the feel of the cooler wind.
“I can't understand how you are not cold in this weather.” she mumbled was she walked past the LifeWing to the warmth inside. Klesh turned and followed behind ruffling her feathers out to rearrange the ones that the wind had misplaced.
The crisp breeze feels good through my feathers. Much better than the muggy air that was here yesterday. Oh, she added almost as an after thought. We are to work with the weyrlings, today they learn about health.
“When? After lunch?”
Klesh nodded once in agreement.
“I'll dress in something warmer and we'll go eat. Are you hungry?”
No, I am still full from yesterday.
“I'll grab something quick then.” she said pulling on a warmer shirt under her leather jacket.
They worked with the weyrlings, going over important parts of their dragons bodies, how to care for them and to spot if anything was wrong with them and how to avoid it from becoming worse. Though not particularly fond of kids Lesti enjoyed working with the energetic souls fueled by their new life partners. It was good for both her and Klesh to be around the dragons and learn their particular species song as that was what they had shown proficiency in. They were still a new LifeWing pair recently graduated and the extra exposure couldn't hurt.
The sun had not lessened throughout the lesson but the sun soaked its warmth in through her jacket and kept the worst of the chill away. Klesh yawned her downy feathers puffing around her beak to show her sleepiness.
The sun makes me tired.
“Me too.”
They relaxed, enjoying the rare weather and warm sun. Lesti leaned back against Klesh's wing closing her eyes and they stood there in one of their rare moments. Both were usually so busy they didn't have a chance to just take part in each others company. She sighed knowing they should head back to the Aerie.
A screech cut through the wind like an arrow and buried itself inside her. Its sound full of terror and fear. She spun around looking for the source.
In the sky! Up! Klesh called, sounds of dragons bugling in alarm wings beating in agitation and dragons leaping into the air.
She looked up, breath suddenly caught in her chest. A single purple streak fell, thrashing through the sky, plummeting to the ground. Dragons cried out and dove towards the helpless pair but they were spotted to low. Lesti didn't wait to watch and see if by some miracle one of them could catch them. She scrambled on Klesh's back and had hardly settled before she took off. They were hardly any distance into the air when the mournful cries from the now hovering dragons told her enough.
They landed beside the purple weyrling as it cried piteously, his rider half under his body still strapped securely to his neck. Green ichor stained the ground in a growing pool contrasting violently with the violet hide. She slid off of the LifeWing and ran over to the rider, Klesh moving to the small shivering crumpled body her song filling the air with its deep resonance. Lesti unharnessed the rider, carefully pulling him from under his dragon. Tears pricked the back of her eyes as she recognized the pair, always around, so energetic and eager for life.
Klesh's song changed and Lesti looked sharply at the dragon, his hide already faded to a dull matte shade that could hardly be recognized as purple. One wing was raised in the air the other wrenched sickeningly backwards half under his hindquarters in an impossible position. The Purple's body seemed painfully flat where the ribcage met the ground where there should have been curves. He cried continuously but even that sounded wrong, like wind screeching through a canyon. Klesh's song now contained a tone Lesti had never heard before and it seemed strained somehow.
The weyrlings eyes were whirling feriously, grey shot with thin streaks of red his cries weakening but no less painful.
I can't find which part to fix first! Worry and panic laced Klesh's words as she leaned closer as if the nearer her song the stronger the effect it would have.
Lesti turned back to the boy trying to see what was wrong and what she should address first, what she should do, how to help. She looked into his eyes and choked out a sob, the forced back tears finding their way out past her barriers, streaming down her cheeks. His eyes were full of pain, pleading.
“I'm trying, we are try-”. The eyes flickered and halted her mid speech as she realized what it was he was pleading for. Another sob forced itself out and she carefully drug him towards His. The Purple sensed His coming nearer and frantically tried to move, to shift, whatever it took to see His. The one good wing thrashed in the air, one hid leg scraped against the ground in a futile effort to move. Nothing would respond, work correctly and he cried out against his helplessness, the pain, and the longing to see His. She gently pulled him till they faced each other, heads almost touching. The dragon kreeled with joy, the boys mouth moving to silent words. He raised his one good arm and caressed his muzzle. From this angle Lesti could see the other side of the Purple's head, scratched and rubbed raw the hide scraped away, green ichor pouring down into his eye clouding into the grey.
They lay there, their breathing labored and ragged, blood mixing in a combined puddle. Klesh's song sang on eerily in the silence. Lesti dropped to a knee a wave of exhaustion crashing against her consciousness. She stared at the pair, unable to form words in her mind. With a start she looked at Klesh. Her beak was closed, the song faded into a crushing silence. A ragged breath later and she was defend by the oppressive sound as dozens of dragons mourned as the death of the young pair was confirmed as they disapeared. Lesti looked around with blurred eyes noticing just then the dragons that had gathered around them. She looked back where the pair had been still seeing their reflections in the slick pool of their life force. She drug her hand to her side to stand up and jerked it off the ground stumbling back up to her feet. She stood there and stared at it, coated in green and red, that last pain laced joyful keen ringing through her head. Her hand blurred.
She heard Klesh move closer soft sounds of sadness coming from her. Lesti turned into her chest grabbing the soft feathers and pushed her head into them breathing in the comforting sent of the lifewing in between sobs.
“W-we wern't good en-nough to save them. W-why couldn't we s-save them?”
Klesh folded her wing over her body and pressed her head into Lesti's back, mourning croons vibrating through their bodies.
We couldn't save these, but... She hesitated as if taking a deep breath. We will not fail again.
Lesti calmed her crying down until she could control her breathing. She clung to Klesh a second longer, gaining strength, then pulled back rubbing the back of her bloodied hand across her face to wipe away the tears. She looked into Klesh's eyes.
“No.” she said, words strong and unfaltering. “We will never fail again. Ever.”
