Hedara's Office
Early Afternoon
There were three papers on Hedara’s desk. The blond woman regarded them each in turn, taking great care with each of them. In her own way she had penned them with care, though in different reasons in each case. Ivy rested on the desk, well out of the way. Though Hedara didn’t know it, Ivy was not fond of at least one of the letters, if only because of how it made Hedara feel when writing it. She was too kind a firelizard to attempt anything but chirp in a friendly way to cheer Hedara. It seemed harder to do these days. Ivy didn’t like it at all. She could tell her larger cousin felt the same. Still, she inched forward, earning a pet from Hedara, cheering the Green flitter.
Hedara picked up the first paper. It was the most official document of the three. A letter to the Hold, explaining exactly what had cause Ice Stone Weyr to cut ties with them. No longer could Icy Caverns Hold be considered under Ice Stone’s protection. No longer would they search for candidates there, and no watch rider would go to protect it. It was all very official. It pained Hedara that Sanshe had requested to add a personal statement at the end, regardless of length. Both because that it had to be done at all and that it would no doubt cause the Ice rider more pain. She had already discussed with the Aerieleaders as well. They would send medical aid, but would not admit candidates from the major Hold. It was about what Hedara could have asked for. She knew that this meant a lot of letters to minor holders to keep things working in the Weyr. It would be difficult, but there was nothing else that Hedara would agree to do when eggs were murdered in a Senior Queen’s clutch. They could not be otherwise. She would not be kind anymore.
This had resulted in the second letter. Though the first had been written and rewritten to ensure proper wording, this one what ben rewritten because nothing had sounded right. What could she say? What could she say? She was cutting ties with the place that had been called her home once upon a time. Of her friends? There were none of note. She had never been quick to attachments. Now even less so. There had been one thing she had to take care of, that was her parents. Hedara had no idea what may occur with them. She didn’t know if they would be safe, or even if they would remain there. Her father likely would. He had worked the mines ever since he was old enough to do so. She had never seen him without dust on him. Her mother could go anywhere, but she would remain with her father. What could she say to them if they stayed? She would not apologize. She could not say a single thing to them in person, and putting to paper feelings was impossible. So she had crumpled up every other paper and was left with a plain paper with one sentence written on it.
I shall not be able to pick up the sword I ordered.
Hedara glossed over the words, looking even more hard and icy then before. She knew they would understand. The last paper made Hedara smile slightly, a dark and cold smile. A smile that was like the feel of cold metal running along one’s back. This paper was a plan, that she was putting together. Something she would deny she was thinking and keep from every soul that she could. She would have to find everyone that was required and not a person more. It would not do to have such a thing be discovered before it was time. The outline was done but there was more to do. She had thought long and hard about who to go to first, but the answer was clear, even from the beginning. If there was one person she had to talk to first, it could only be him. Regardless of his role in this whole event, he had to be willing to help her on at least some level. Without it, it all crumbled. So, finally, and carefully Hedara picked up her quill and wrote a single name on it, presumably to become the header of a longer list.
T’vax.
