Mid morning
“Why am I doing this again?” Cr’wean was grumbling as he was dragged toward the beach. Cyanee was looking delighted, looking more pleased than ever. Dawn and Breaker trailed after her, while Zigbrieth and Kiyosh stayed where they were, watching their riders. The Vulture and the dragon were comfortable sitting together, though they were a little odd as far as relationship went. Today Zigbrieth had worked this into his schedule and Kiyosh had tricked Cr’wean into coming, thinking it was just a day out with his sister. Not quite the case.
“Because I haven’t had anyone to practice with in forever!” The Bluerider bounced as she moved, looking for the perfect spot. “And I want to sing with someone today.” Her brother grumbled, looking entirely displeased with the whole idea.
“What are we singing?” Cyanee finally let go, stopping on the sand. Dawn and Breaker landed as well, getting comfortable where they sat.
“Doom Song of course!” Cyan knew it was his favorite. He still looked displeased though. She knew him better than that.
“Fine.” Cr’wean took a deep breath, and Cyan did the same. The Weyrling brought up her hand and used a finger to tap it in the air, the beat being set. Kiyosh and Zigbrieth listened closely, the sound of the waves against the beach the only thing they heard so far. For Cyan and Cr’wean, it was the sound of the backdrop of their lives, something they had always had. Something they must always raise their voice over to be heard. Dawn scooted forward, Break being silent and watching, waiting for the finger to indicate the song began.
Cyanee started, a sudden high and pure song coming from her lips. For such a petite girl it was amazing to see that she could sing as she did. She was no harper, but she had sung by the sea while she learned the ways of the fisherfolk. It was high and sorrowful, not a single word went with it, and Cr’wean watched the finger tap out the beat before he began his own song. He had the first words to this song.
“Can you heard the lady singing, can you hear her summon song, like a lovely bell ‘a ringing, though something is very wrong.” Cr’wean’s voice was middle of the range, but it was rich and had weight to it.
“Come to me!”
“So she says.”
“Come to me!”
“Can you feel the dread?”
“So you came!”
“Now it’s too late.”
“You can’t escape.”
“It’s the song, sung in sorrow, inviting doom, trapping all.”
The song went back and forth, Cr’wean providing support to Cyan’s verses, and Cyan weaving melody over Cr’wean’s observations. The song went on, about a jealous lover calling in men and then causing ther demise. Sweet at first, but deadly in the end It was uncomfortable in melody at points, but Cyan looked way to happy through it all. Cr’wean, was focusing, so he looked the part of the warning narrator, knowing what trouble they had all gotten themselves into.
