Name: Dirk Goldenborn
Pronunciation: Dehrk Goldenborn
Gender: Male
Age: 21 Turns
Turnday: 55.09.17
Weyr: Rainbow Mists Weyr
Rank: Wher Candidate
Family: No one is one hundred percent certain of who Dirk's father is, though he likes to believe it was a dragonrider. His mother, Leena, was a kitchen drudge who died giving birth to him at the age of thirty-five. He has no siblings.
Friends: When he lived at Golden Flight Hold, Dirk had a small gang of friends whom he was very close to. Their names were Gart (16), Ulren (14), and Burns (18). Gart and Ulren were brothers, the sons of a Holder family, and Burns was another orphan and a drudge who was somewhat of a leader of the group.
Pets: Dirk has a small, black and brown male feline named Scat. (will come in later)
Appearance: Dirk is short for his age, but has a strong, stocky build. His boyish face is tanned, and he has a rather long nose. His dark brown eyes are usually crinkled because he is almost always smiling. His dirty blond-brown hair is longish, going to the nape of his neck, and messy. Dirk's clothing is simple and normally a bit worn, but he doesn't care. He does own a very nice pair of leather work gloves (some wonder if he stole them, but he has never said), which are his prized possession.
Personality: For the most part, Dirk is a very easygoing, likable person. He gets along with virtually everyone and doesn't judge others. He isn't the most educated or brightest human being, but he makes up for it with surprising wit and cleverness. He is lacking in manners and can be rude and crass. He loves to be around large crowds, because they energize him and he enjoys making himself the center of attention. Dirk's philosophy is to look at the brighter side of life, and as a result he can hardly be serious and seemingly ignores his problems until they go away. He has an intense loathing for canines, because they always used to chase his many feline pets in the Hold.
History: Dirk was born in Golden Flight hold to a kitchen drudge named Leena. Leena died during the birth, and no one knew who the father was, so Dirk was placed with the other orphans of the hold to be raised by Alla, the woman who was in charge of them. Dirk never let his lack of parents bother him, because he had everything he ever wanted: his brothers among the other parentless boys. He and his adopted brothers caused quite a lot of trouble in their childhood, always bothering Alla and the other holders.
Though Dirk grew out of his trouble-making streak, he was still known to be carefree and a bit reckless, with a strong desire for attention that may stem from his lack of parents. The majority of the holders overlooked this, though, because Dirk was a hard worker in the fields, and his personality made him well-liked. Dirk spent most of his time with his three closest friends, Gart, Ulren, and Burns. The four of them spent as much time as they could oustide, playing sports and pestering their elders for stories. This love for stories was ironic, because none of them were literate and saw traditional learning as a waste of time. They preferred to learn practical, hands-on trades.
From early in his life, Dirk had only one goal in mind: to become a dragonrider. He had spent many a day staring longingly at the watchdragon of the hold, imagining what it would be like to fly. And so when he was Searched at the age of fifteen, he left the hold at once for Rainbow Mists Weyr. However, his dreams were crushed when he failed to Impress. For the first time in his life, Dirk was truly sad. Unwilling to go back to the hold and live with the shame of "defeat," Dirk stayed at the Weyr and made a small living working in the fields, his hopes dashed each time he walked away from a hatching dragonless. It wasn't the glory that he dreamed of, but at least he could be around the dragons in some way.
Dirk's hope rekindled when he experienced his first encounter with one of the Weyr's watchwhers. He was on a nighttime stroll (or so he says) and ran into the creature in a dimly lit tunnel. Believing him to be an intruder or thief, the wher attacked, but its handler arrived just in time to call it off before Dirk could be seriously hurt. Instead of being terrified, Dirk was awed by the wher. It was, to him, just as powerful and majestic as a dragon. And if he could not have a dragon, he could at least have a wher, right? At least, that was his thought process. And so he volunteered to become a candidate for the next wher hatching.

Preferred Colors | Tiger, Crimson, Purple | Tigers and Purples have similar personalities to Dirk. It would be funny to see him paired with a Crimson because their personalities would be so contrasting. |
