Quote: There are some things you shouldn’t carry on the back of a runner. Top of the list: small dragons. Don’t ask how I know that. Just don’t.
Appearance: Kelradek is not particularly striking, having a rather well-formed face, with a beak of a nose, olive-tan skin, and dark brown hair, which he wears to the nape of his neck in back, and slightly shorter to the front. His hazel eyes are neither large nor small, though he does have amazingly thick lashes. He is not particularly tall, being rather lean and wiry. He stands at most 5’1”, and likely won’t grow much more. His right leg and lower right side are scarred, souvenirs of diving into the wildfire at Golden Flight Hold.
Personality: Kelradek is fairly quiet and cautious. He does not trust easily. He has a well-developed (some might say over-developed) sense of loyalty and responsibility, and is extremely protective of those whom he considers friends. He is not a child that owes easily; he dislikes being in another’s debt, and will work to even the tally in whatever way he must.
History: Kelradek was the illegitimate child of a drudge from Igen. He was adopted by another drudge family when he was around three Turns old. Not long after that, his mother left. Being too young to help with any of the work, Kelradek was left to wander around, provided he didn’t bother anyone important. Being an extremely active young boy, he spent a large amount of time tailing guardsmen about their duties. In fact, when he was about six Turns old (and thus considered old enough to help out with his adoptive family’s work) a couple of the guards missed him, and sought him out, accompanied by another small boy.
That other small boy, whose name was Nalkeldar, turned out to be a cousin (child of the lord’s youngest uncle) of the Lord Holder of Igen, who, being an only child whose possible contacts were older than him by several Turns — and whose behavior and interests made visitors quick to remove their children from his vicinity — was quick to adopt the slightly younger Kelradek as a companion and playmate.
Nalkeldar, being both older and infinitely more powerful, took the lead in all of his and Kelradek’s adventures. Some of these were as innocent as they seemed, but Nalkeldar was the kind of child who liked pulling body parts off of insects for fun, and we’d bust the rating on the site if we discussed what he did to small animals. Of course, this sort of entertainment required that they successfully evade the guard who was supposed to keep an eye on Nalkeldar. The response of that individual was, since Kelradek was always with Nalkeldar, to teach Kelradek how to fight (mostly focusing on unarmed and knife combat) and to instill in him the sense that he was Nalkeldar’s protector.
Then, when Nalkeldar was 14 and Kelradek 13, disaster struck. Nalkeldar’s cousin, Lord Vorkellis, finally had a son. This boy of course replaced Nalkeldar as Lord Vorkellis’s heir. Nalkeldar, angry at fate but not daring to attack his infant cousin, obtained a large sum of money — or rather, had Kelradek obtain it — and paid a crime ring for a dragon egg. Any dragon egg, for Nalkeldar was convinced that if he could not be a Lord Holder, he’d be a dragonrider.
The crime ring named a place and a time, and Nalkeldar was there. He brought Kelradek along, mostly to appease the guard. The two boys walked through the circle of men, Kelradek stopping at the edge of the enclosed sand, Nalkeldar walking up to the egg in the middle, highlighted by the twin lights of the moons. The egg hatched then, revealing a dragon dark as the night sky, with swirls like the clouds across the same. Kelradek hardly dared to breathe. The little creature was the most amazing, most perfect that he had ever seen.
Nalkeldar reached out to it, as imperiously as he did everything, only the dragonet swiped at him. A clumsy swipe, but it still threw the boy back. Startled, Kelradek lunged forward, intending to protect his friend, only to end up frozen, braced for an attack which never came, staring into the rainbow eyes of that most handsome of creatures.
The attack came from behind. Nalkeldar, realizing what had happened, threw himself at Kelradek’s back, knocking the smaller boy down and pummeling him. The dragonet, scared and afraid, lunged at Nalkeldar, savagely wounding him. The little Midnight ignored Kelradek’s shouts to let go, to release Nalkeldar. In the end, Kelradek had to grab the small dragon bodily and literally haul it away from the moaning wreck that was Nalkeldar.
It was Kelradek who heeded the little dragon’s cries for food, Kelradek who bandaged Nalkeldar’s wounds, Kelradek who loaded Nalkeldar into the small cart, which they’d brought to hide the dragon in, Kelradek who brought Nalkeldar back to the Hold, and Kelradek who hid the dragonet in the stables. It was also Kelradek who tried to convince the dragonet to bond to Nalkeldar, though it cut him to the quick to sit there in the stables, and try to do so. The attempt was utterly in vain. Belegurth had made a choice, and he would not change it.
That the attempt was made did Kelradek no good at all, any more than his care for Nalkeldar’s wounds, or even his loyalty in charging the attacking dragonet. He had made a serious mistake, he had, even if it was by accident, taken from Nalkeldar something that Nalkeldar thought was his. Within the next day, Kelradek’s entire adopted family had no work, nor any prospect of any. Even jobs that had been open for Turns were mysteriously closed. When Kelradek asked a guard why, he was hit in the face, hard enough to knock him out completely for several hours. When he awakened, his family was gone, and Belegurth was crouched next to him, blood staining the dragonet’s black nose.
Also there was one of the men from the crime ring, with an interesting offer. It boiled down to: “Come with us, and we’ll see to yet that you and the dragon get food, shelter, the works. We’ll even see to it that your family gets that too. You won’t be allowed to see them, of course, but they’ll be taken care of. In return, you do what we say, when we say, and how we say. Got that?”
Kelradek looked out towards the main street, then reached out and took the man’s hand. It was the best deal he’d ever had put his way, and the best he was likely to see for that matter. For 18 months, he trained under the direction of the syndicate’s people, learning about dragon care and enough about riders and being one that he could “get by”. He also performed some tasks for his trainers, particularly during the last few months. At the end of that time, he was presented with transfer papers claiming he was from Igen Weyr, and told to fly to RMW.
Adoption?: Maybe

Dragon's Name: Belegurth
Dragon’s Gender: Male
Dragon's Age: 4 Turns
Dragon's Color: Midnight (0b0b52|000000)
Dragon's Appearance: Belegurth’s body is mostly deepest midnight blue, with black swirling through it after the fashion of thin clouds obscuring the night sky. He also has highlights of a lighter, though still midnight, blue, particularly on his shoulders, sides, and wings. His nose, feet, and the bones of his wing are black, as are the ridges on his back and neck. Also swirled through his hide are shades of deep grey. He is small for a midnight, measuring a mere 26 feet from chest to rump. He has scaring on the right side of his head and neck, a souvenir of diving through flames to rescue a child.
Dragon's Personality: Unlike most Midnights, Belegurth has no problem expressing anger, though he does tend to brood and sulk when his feelings are hurt. He enjoys sneaking around, viewing it as a game, and he exists to win games. He likes to gather information, because this gives him knowledge and even power. He is determined to never be so helpless again as he was the night of his Hatching.
Dragon's History: Belegurth hatched in the Igen desert, in about the middle of Turn 3074. He bonded to Kelradek, despite that boy’s almost-reluctance. After fighting his way out of the stable where he had been hidden, he rejoined Kelradek and they trained together under the guidance of the syndicate, an old book, and Belegurth’s instincts. At the end of 15 months of training, Belegurth and Kelradek became scouts for their trainers, before journeying south to Rainbow Mists Weyr.
