In quick succession a plethora of colors burst onto the canvas of the Sands. Blue and purple, grey and a beautiful blend of yellow, orange and red, among still other dragonets. Maelinne had never seen the likes of it. She hadn't seen much of birth in general, to be honest. She was captivated by the speed and curiosity that filled the younglings. They were different from what she knew of humans. Perhaps their excitement and wonder, their ability to interact with each other and with humans was what drew people do them, even from a young age.
In her pondering she was abruptly interrupted by a thump on her leg. She saw a blur of reddish blue streak by. Her leg smarted from the high speed slap and she rubbed at it as the reddish mark appeared. She noticed one girl looking at her with terror. "I'm okay," she affirmed and topped it off with a wink. The other girl didn't know what to do with that and so perplexed (but no longer worried, which was good) she looked away.
In that moment another boy had had the misfortune to collide with a dragon, but given the worried faces of some (that, fortunately, dissolved into laughter or disinterest) he wasn't any worse for the ware. A bubbling laugh sprung from her lips, peeling into the air about her. It earned her a glare, but her eyes squinted closed did not see. There was always something to be worried over in life. One never really knew what would happen next. Guesses were just guesses. So she was happy amongst the varied peoples. She enjoyed everything she could; because Maelinne chose to.
What in Faranth's name is that Grey doing? Fedri glanced behind the line of candidates to observe the dragonet, before shifting his attention back to the unhatched eggs. Huh, the largest and the smallest, there should be a rhyme to go with that. He trailed his eyes to where the Blue was still beside the queen, tilting his head slightly, before straightening it and moving on to observe the rest of the sands. The little Blue can do as he pleases and-oh dear, they're at it again, I do hope no one gets hurt. Fedri's eyes stopped on where the Black and Flame has started their squabble again, causing the Aurora to turn her attention to the boys.
Fedri wrinkled his nose, feeling a headache coming on from attempting to focus on so many things at once. He spared a look in an attempt to see the Purple and Darkblue, but found his vision blocked by the taller candidates around him. He puffed out a brief sigh, shaking his head before looking back towards the unhatched eggs, observing the web pattern of cracks with a slight smile. It wouldn't be long now.

Andromedae's eyes kept flickering back and forth between the Sunset and Aurora, not a Queen but both were beautiful. They would suit if they had to do. She wasn't below a Queen, power was always nice however. She felt the hot Sand burning her feet through the thin sandals, making her lean from one foot to the other, occasionally shifting her standing spot ever so slightly. She did not care to pay attention to anyone else, they didn't matter. Only herself and the dragon she hoped to Impress mattered to her. It was becoming disheartening every moment that passed when off the Sands, wondering if she was even strong or good enough to become a hero of Pern.
Hunter saw Ch'ara's wave, attempting to return it before he looked away to his dragonet, but was too late. She sighed and turned to look at the array of colors running about the Sands below. She began to wonder, "What if I had never become deaf? What if I could be standing there?" She felt a little pain in her heart, knowing she'd never get the opportunity. However, her medical research saved lives of others and that was her great contribution to the people. She didn't need to be a Rider to save lives and be recognized or respected. She felt maybe the bond with another being may have been nice, especially if she could actually hear that being. Whether mind-speak or actually hearing it's great roar.
It was nothing but silence as she watched the baby dragons open and shut their mouths, no doubt in Hunter's mind warbles and squeals could be heard. Now, whether these noises were pleasant or not she wasn't sure of...but the crowd around her seemed to be excited. Children leaning over the railings. Adults making bets on the last two eggs. Riders looking at the legacy that will be coming up to fight with them in a few years time. Yes, all of this Hunter had observed, when most others had no idea what was going on around them in the heat of excitement. Pro to being deaf? Observation and it was rare to be caught completely off guard.
R'niaan had ordered buckets of meat be chopped and filled to the brim as soon as the humming had began. He stood at the exit of the Sands where new Weyrlings take their first steps together to begin their bonding stages. He looked back at his dragon lovingly, thinking of all the times they spent together...even back to their Impression day. He watched as dragonets spilled to the Sands, making their way and sniffing out what they would call their mine. Chiara Impressed! He Impressed a Brown at that! A good, level minded dragon!
Shards, if that isn't a good match, I don't know what is!
Well, I would say us?
You have a valid point.
I always have a valid point, R'niaan.
R'niaan laughed at his dragon's tone, such a sassy one today. Well, when wasn't he sassy?
R'niaan looked at Ch'ara and greeted him with a huge grin, "Your sister will be extremely proud, BrownRider!" putting emphasis on the boy's new title.
Hey, Ch'ara, what are those? Velageth asked, looking at the sky.
"Those are stars, Velageth" the boy said to the dragon. "Sometimes, they make pictures, and the pictures represent certain stories. I don't know the stories myself, but I do know the pictures." He laughed, but it quickly turned into a yawn. "I'm surprised no one else has Impressed yet." Velageth's attention was stolen again. "Come on silly, you need to eat."
But Mine, who are they? Ch'ara heard the voice and looked up, smiling.
"Indeed she will Weyrlingmaster!" he agreed happily. "Especially after the disaster that was last time." Even talking about this mauling, he couldn't keep the smile off his face. Velageth yawned widely, and Ch'ara flinched away. "Ug, Velageth, your breath stinks!"
Sorry... he replied sheepishly. Ch'ara laughed again.
"Just finish eating, and slowly. It'll be bad for both of us if you got a bellyache from eating too fast. Neither of us will be able to get the sleep we need."
Velageth nodded and took a few more pieces of meat from Ch'ara's hand. He was eating slower, and Ch'ara could tell that he was getting full.
"Oh, R'niaan, it's Ch'ara now," he said quickly. He'd forgotten to tell the Weyrlingmaster his new name. He looked around for the oil. "Now that he's done eating, I'm supposed to oil his hide, right?"

R'niaan nodded to the young Rider, "Of course, Ch'ara...well chosen name." He watched the young pair, casually glancing over at the archway expecting a new pair to come in at any moment from the Sands.
"Yes, oiling his hide is more important now than ever; this is due to his growth being so rapid." It was an obvious fact, R'niaan knew this, but not every Candidate was aware of how fast these dragons grew.
R'niaan felt hot breath on his neck and turned to see Bamath's nose inches from his face.
Can I help you?
I just wanted a better look at the little one.
Never hurts to ask when you're breathing down my neck, sir.
Well, I if I didn't breath down your neck, who would?
The smallest egg broke first, but slowly. The mottled egg fell away in pieces, revealing a tail, a wing, until finally the rest of the egg just couldn’t hold together, and the White fell onto the sands. She observed the world around her for a moment, looking at the humans on the sands and in the stands. Having done that she very deliberately moved directly to her Blue brother and gave him a gentle tap with her snout. He turned to her, tearing his eyes away from the goings on. They looked at each other for a moment and the White headed toward the female candidates, and the Blue followed, looking pleased.
The Purple and Darkblue continued along the line, passing the Aurora on her trip. Niether of them looked as though they were interested in anything here, so they moved together toward the female candidates to take a look at them. However they both kept an eye on their quarreling brother, who were somewhat migrating to the female candidates. The Darkblue kept his head down and pressed on, while the Purple slowed down a bit and observed each female candidate with more intensity. They were near the other end of the line, so she would just spend more time over here.
The Aurora continued down the line until she stopped suddenly, facing one of the male candidates. She dug her claws into the hot sands, as though she was nervous, though it was hard to say why. It became obvious to at least one person though. She was looking for the exact perfect thing to say.
[smear:4c9693]Greeting F’ri, my rider. I am Esheth, and I am[/smear:33d790][smear:33d790] most pleased to make your acquaintance.[/smear:219462] She bowed her head slightly before continuing. [smear:4c9693]Would you be opposed to getting me[/smear:33d790][smear:33d790] some food? I am quite hungry.[/smear:219462]
The last egg was nearly there, not a single part of its surface was free from cracks. It was still for the moment, as though whatever inside needed a break for the time being. Then the entire egg shattered, and the last dragon stood on the sands, in all her glory. She was a lovely aqua dragonet with purple and pink all melting together, marking her as an Aurora. However, over her hide, concealing her brighter colors was a Black Haze. She dusted herself off, and strutted forward, walking with uncommon grace. The other dragonets didn’t note it, but the White and Blue changed their path and halfway to the candidates they conversed, all sitting down and an apparent conversation began to take place.

She hates strife of any sort, and will often keep her opinions to herself rather than get into an argument. Esheth can be somewhat clumsy, not being the most dexterous lady. However, she is an incredibly sturdy creature, and has an impressive endurance. Join this with her lack of desire to complain means that she can continue far after others are worn out. Andri was curiously watching the dragonets converse amongst themselves and continue on their path to finding their mines. It was then, the Aurora made her way to a male Candidate, obvious Impression being made.
Then, it happened. The last two eggs burst into being. A little White, so precious, and then there was a Aurora....with a black haze?
Hunter kept observing the crowd as the dragonets rambled about. It was when someone's face lit up in excitement, followed by the rest, she turned to see the little White romping about with the rest of it's siblings. She then felt her heart telling her to look at the larger egg in time to see an Aurora with a swirling black thing around her. Was that a haze? She had never seen a Hazed dragon before and it struck her curiosity. That would be something she would have to look into, that's for sure. They must have some kind of odd history. She turned to see the little White and Blue walking together towards the female Candidates. She loved the White dragonet, such a small and precious little girl. Then one of the Auroras Impressed! There was enjoyment that filled her, seeing happiness being spread around amongst Riders, Weyrfolk and Candidates alike.
Saphierah made it. She was finally at Ice Stone and not a moment too late. She snuck into the Sands with a help from the Rider who brought her from Rainbow Mists. Yes, she was late but it was better late than never! She saw her old friend Andromedae standing a few feet from her, who gave her a death stare for arriving at the Hatching so late. However, news did not always travel as fast as others would like for it to. Saphierah felt the rush of adrenaline flooding her veins, her body tingling from excitement.

As soon as the white dragonet was out of it's shell, Luna's eyes widened. He had never seen such a fascinating creature, and he adjusted his glasses slightly to get a better look. It was so much smaller than the others, but yet just as regal as any dragon, and he smiled gently to himself for his thoughts. Never had he expected such an event to be taking place during his arrival, let alone have a front row seat to it. And what a fascinating view that was.
As the dragonets continued to interact with the Candidates, he found himself fearing for certain ones, wondering if he would be witness to a mauling here today. Perhaps he wouldn't, but he didn't quite like the sight of blood and the thought perturbed him. However, an Impression was made, the second of the day, and his thoughts changed instead back to the hopefulness that usually came with Hatchings. The hum of the dragons was starting to become deafening, and he had a feeling that more than simply the Aurora and the Brown would be Impressing soon. His heart felt... Off, though, like there was something messing with the natural order of things. There had to be a catch...
Wasn't there always to happy events like this? He felt like any minute now, the dragons would reveal something unexpected.
Tiger Cirryyth of Weyrharper V'ridian Black Sunristh of Weyrling A'kai Blood Zojiroth of Candidate Master Moraiya Lavender and her fading Starlight Fayzeth Elraishsa of the Wild Rowensae and Pscittasch Lylore the Strange Oldbies: R'nos, Felora, K'cin, S'nire(deceased)
Travis had gotten back up to stand after the dragonet ran him over. To the audience, and to the other Candidates, he seemed no worse for wear; there was blood scored across his chest from scrapes, but he seemed fine.
But his eyes were glazing over; and every few minutes, he would shake his head to keep himself awake. Breathing was slowly becoming an issue.
But he stared at the eggs, and counted rhythmically in his head, and forced himself to stay standing, and to stay breathing, and to stay and stay and stay and stay and stay and stay...
Oh that boy, the one who had fallen, he Impressed! She didn't know his name but their shared plight in draconic collision had left her with a peripheral interest in what happened to him. She clapped thrice and let out a whoop before she considered that might not be proper Candidate behavior. Oops. Good! she enthused as she admired his lovely green Aurora.
Looking at her own surroundings, Purple, Blue and White, and Darkblue all came past. She sucked in her breath and held it, watching them in return. What must it be like to be them? Exciting? Terrifying? They both faced prospects of bliss and life or loneliness and death, did they not? Though surely the humans hoped more to avoid being mauled. Though was that fair to prioritize their needs first? Well, Maelinne knew her own safety and continued life was top priority. At least that was certain. O, pick or don't so I know how to move onward on my path in life, she thought at the dragonets. Her feet were getting too hot in the sandals. Ick.
Soon enough the conversation appeared to end and the White stood up and gave the Black-Haze Aurora a bow. The Black-Haze seemed pleased with this and started to move, the Blue and White following in her graceful wake. She went to the Purple and Darkblue first, who paused and then followed her as she moved off. She arrived at the Gray, looking primly at him before she motioned and then headed toward the Sunset. The Gray looked somewhat amused then fell in with the rest. The Sunset was still somewhat spooked, but calmed as the Black-Haze Aurora approached. After a brief conversation (or so it seemed) the Sunset followed the Aurora back toward the female candidates. She eyed the two males, still fighting but proceeded to the area behind the line of candidates. The other dragonets assembled themselves in a circle, barring the White and looked back toward the Black-Haze dragonet. Presently, a ripple of emotion went through the circle, some amusement, confusion, worry. It was hard to say what was going to occur here.
However, one by one, their gazes shifted to the White dragonet, and then tensed up. A moment later and the White backed up and then suddenly ran forward toward the circle. At the last moment the dragonets all ducked, the White landing on them, and then they all pushed upward, the White jumping. With a tumble she found herself in the stands, having upset a few of the observers of the hatching. She took a moment to right herself, before trotting directly to Hunter and placing her head on the woman’s lap.
I am Tinidrith. Those were the only words she needed now. Anything else would ruin the moment. Hopefully those words would be enough for hers as well.
The dragonets below observed that their sibling made it out okay, although she might be a bit bruised. That was enough for the Aurora, who trotted off to the female candidates, her work being done. The rest observed the stands, curious as to the whole affair they found themselves a part of. How odd.
The Black and Flame finally broke apart and with a growl, both went and looked at the female candidates. As they looked, it appeared that their annoyance with each other could not be contained, they pushed against each other and began to try to shove each other out of the way and have this stretch of candidates to themselves. The Flame seemed to win more here, but the Black was not about to be outdone. Soon they were trying to shove each other out of the way as they raced down the line of girls. The Black-Haze dragonet looked even more displeased at this, and walked directly up to them, and stared. They looked at her angrily, but slowly they seemed to be listening, and then they looked behind her in different directions. She slid to the side and the Flame walked directly toward the male dragonets, while the Black, went toward the glistening ice around the sands.
When the Black arrived, he observed his reflection on the melting ice. His sister was correct. She had seen what he saw, a desire to just be himself. Yes. He was Gentrith, and he did not need a rider to be who he was. Being himself was enough.

Hunter felt excitement rising in her chest as the dragonets arranged themselves in a circle; then curiosity took over. The White began running towards the stands. She leaped. What was this little being doing? So agile to be so tiny.
Then it happened. She felt a tingling sensation in her body, a certain warmth. Over powering hunger over came her body, a thirst that was not being quenched fast enough.
I am Tinidrith.
Hunter almost fell out of her seat in shock in surprise. Had she just heard the little White? What was this madness? She let a gasp of unbelief escape her lips. She could hear dragons. Well, what she considered hearing.
My little Tinidrith. Hunter mindspoke back to her dragon, her breathing became shallow. She felt the little claws from the dragonet pull at her breeches as she climbed into her Mine's lap like a feline, rubbing her head along the bottom of Hunter's chin. I hunger.
Hunter gathered up the small White in her arms and began to walk from the stands. She still couldn't believe this had happened. She couldn't believe that she actually Impressed a dragonet. She wasn't even a Candidate?
I chose you. You just made it harder for me to get to you. Tinidrith said to Hunter; this caused Hunter to realize her little one could hear her every thought. She was no longer alone. She had someone that was a part of her and Hunter could never ask for more.
When Hunter set the little White to the ground by the feeding tables, R'niaan came around to greet her. "Hello, I am the Weyrli-"
R'niaan, she is deaf and can not hear you. Bamath said, cutting him off. Allow me.
Bamath craned his neck around and down to look eye level with the new pair, examining them. Can you translate for me, little Tinidrith?
I can.
Bamath began to give instructions to the little White, who in turn repeated them to Hunter.
Hunter was absorbing the melodic voice her dragonet had, the only voice she had heard since she was a toddler. She felt light in her heart as she nodded her thanks to the Rider and his dragon, turning to begin slowly feeding pieces to Tinidrith. The White at first began to try to eat as fast as her body would allow; Hunter put a stop to this by refusing to feed her if she did not chew.
Hunter could never imagine a more perfect being, much less a more perfect start at a new life.

Ch'ara took the bucket of oil from R'niaan's hands, then saw Hunter. He smiled and waved.
"Hey, can you see if you can talk to her?" he asked Velageth.
I can certainly try, Velageth said before looking over at Hunter and Tinidrith. Your name is Hunter, yes? My name is Velageth, and Ch'ara has told me much about you. His eyes whirled green and he almost appeared to smile. And with that, Ch'ara stuck his hands in the oil, then began to massage it into Velageth's hide. Velageth arched his back, looking strangely like a feline at that moment. Then the Brown yawned widely.
"Hey, stay awake until I finish oiling you," Ch'ara scolded with a laugh. Velageth opened his wings and Ch'ara gently worked the oil into the wings, then underneath them. He fought a yawn of his own, already feeling the exhaustion and only three of them had Impressed! Would he be able to make it through the rest of the Hatching without falling asleep?

Hunter if Hunter had turned her head any faster, she was quite sure it would have spun off. Her eyes landed on the Brown when she heard another little voice in her head that was very different from Tinidrith's.
You can speak to me too? I can hear both of you?
We can mind-speak to anyone we choose to speak to. Most of the time we do not. Tinidrith chimed in, nudging her Brown brother lovingly on the side of his neck. He was larger than she, that was a very noticeable trait.
Hunter looked at Ch'ara and felt tears forming in her eyes. She finally had a voice. She could finally be heard. Her little being whom had chosen her, was now her completed half. She flung her arms around her dragon's body, pulling her close and began to cry uncontrollably.
Mine, what is wrong? She squeaked, concern filling her body and her eyes whirling green with mixtures of orange and red.
Nothing my love, everything is the way it should be.
Tinidrith's eyes changed back to normal blue-green whirls and she turned to Velageth, We are both happy now.
The Aurora Haze observed her brothers moving off and nodded to herself. Finally she could look over the candidates in peace. Her other siblings were still not quite back to looking over the candidates, and she would have the run of things. However, it didn’t seem like she needed that long at all. She found exactly what she was looking for the moment there were no distractions in her way. So she strode across the female line to the only girl that would be hers.
[smear:17999b]Oh, there you are Andromedae. This is[/smear:363341][smear:363341] good. I have become hungry, you will[/smear:ca99ce][smear:ca99ce] feed me. I am, of course, Ziaveth. Come.[/smear:363341][smear:363341] We need not waste a moment longer here.[/smear:6654b5] Ziaveth looked proudly at her rider, completely certain of her choice.
Behind them the dragonets were dispersing, The Blue heading with the Sunset back toward the boys, and the Darkblue and Gray headed toward the females. Like before, the Gray went behind the line, looking to spook the candidates. However, the Purple had different plans. She was done looking the same places as her Darkblue brother. She looked back toward the male candidates, and decided to just spend her time looking at the stands. It was interesting, and the moment her Darkblue brother left she could look over the female candidates. So she took a stroll next to the stands, enjoying the human enthusiasm the people displayed.
Suddenly she stopped, a look of wonder flickering across the dragonets face. Oh, L’na! L’namine can I get up there? Or you down here? I… I am Rinneth! Please, I do want get to you soon. The purple looked completely enraptured as she impressed.
There was applause as the Flame found his rider, leaving the last four on the field, two on each side of the candidates. The hatching was hurrying to a close.

In the same way, if she ever is wronged, she can hold onto it for far too long and it colors her opinion of a person beyond what has been done to her. Still she is generally very sweet and isn’t one to stomp around, just in case there is something tiny and wonderful that she hasn’t spotted yet.
