Dramatic as it is dark, the Lament Ruin was once known as Riverway Hold, a great trading hub for the Southern continent. Right in the middle of everything and on a river, they sent goods from the plains and hills all around to Weyrs and Southern Hold, where larger ships were housed and launched to the northern continent.
When the volcanic eruption that relocated Waterfall Valley Weyr’s population to Rainbow Mists, the Hold declined in strength without the shipments south to Waterfall Valley, as the many producers would send their supplies straight to Southern Hold to get better prices.
In the Weyr War era, Riverway was attacked by vengeful Dark Mists Weyr Riders (in nameless prominence, S'nire and Darkblue Syceth and H'to and Chrome Chineteth). It was the final blow that destroyed the Hold. Burned to the ground, only the stone husks of some builds remain after the Turns unattended. It attracts some travelers who want to see the place for its historical value and legends.
In the Ruins is where the Wall stands, the names of the Weyr War heroes inscribed in the stones.
A several miles downriver from the Ruin is the present day town of Riverway, not big enough to be more than the smallest minor Hold, it houses these travelers and is at its surface lazy, river town. But there are stranger happenings here than what is merely on the surface.
The previous Lord passed away after a sharp decline of his health in 3064, leaving the small Hold to his considerably young wife Lady Dayenne Garuntaine who was still in her early 30s. At first young men tried to win her hand, locals and those who came from other small regions, but she declined them all. Her lack of remarriage has become something of a local joke for impossibilities (“This Turn will be the one I strike it rich!” / “Yeah, yeah. And you’ll marry Lady Garuntaine too.”).
