Sunny for well over three quarters of the Turn, a place of open grassland with gentle hills (which anywhere else would be called small earth mounds), Rolling Hills is a beautiful place. It is home to some of the very best weavers on Pern, an industry which provides it with practically its only trade goods. The main hold is the site of an extensive Weaver Hall, as well as a much smaller BeastCraft Hall. Ironically, once one travels out some way from the main Hold, BeastCraft becomes far more common knowledge than does the fine tricks of weaving, although almost every household can boast at least one weaver of journeyman ability. This is likely because weaving and beast craft are the cornerstones of existence for most of these folk. There is a small industry associated with producing a drink from white-root tubers, which is like wine but with more strength.
The weather in Rolling Hills ranges from hot and dry in the summer, to very cold and dry during the winter. There is a beauty to the land here, which inspires weavers to new heights, but it is a stark beauty, almost harsh. There is very little rainfall here, which is why farming is not really an option. Most people here eat meat and dairy, typically from ovines and runners. The climate encourages people to wear clothing styles good for both extremes. In the winter, leather trousers are frequently worn (fur-lined sometimes), with thick shirts and a mid-calf-length overcoat that overlaps across the chest (buttons are along one side of the body). Belts or sashes are worn at the waist over these coats, to help hold them closed. These garments are often vibrantly dyed, and frequently embroidered with abstract patterns involving lots of loops.
The primary mode of transportation here is by runnerback, using the local small, sturdy runners. Away from the main Hold, most people live in round yurt-like tents. A necessity, since people tend to follow their herds.
The current Lord Holder is Lord Munokhoi, an extremely quick-witted man who is known for his skill in trading. His Lady, Edetta, is well known as one of the best Weavers in the Hold. Lord Munokhoi is very proud of his wife’s skill, and openly hopes that his two daughters will likewise acquire it.
