True to his decision a couple weeks prior, K’rad had nosed around, subtly investigating precisely how one went about acquiring a firelizard. He’d also had to re-start additional practices, owing to the good and simple fact that Belegurth — not possessing any great natural skill with flaming, and still having to learn the more advanced aerial maneuvers while dealing with the scarring damage from the fire — was something of a low-grade hazard to the rest of the Wing. He still occasionally had trouble controlling his flaming while flying, a situation that had been discovered when he nearly flamed another dragon in the face on accident. Wingleader T’kar had not been particularly amused, and the extra practices had restarted the very next day.
Strangely, Belegurth didn’t object. Then again, failure annoyed with Midnight. It wasn’t particularly enjoyable to Kel either; he was more than willing to work to master flying firestone drills, particularly because not managing to do so would definitely lead to suspicion being cast his way. At the same time though, he wished there might be a chance to demonstrate to these people that he did know something.
Sighing, K’rad kept rubbing oil into Belegurth’s hide. The chance wasn’t ever likely to come up and, if it did… Glancing over his shoulder, K’rad watched WeyrlingMaster L’ras depart. Did he want that man associating him with those skills? He was coming to suspect that the answer was actually “no”.
Stop this! He is just another powerful man, and we owe him nothing. Getting attached is a dimglow thing to do anyway. Remember what they said before sending us?
K’rad rolled his shoulders back. Yeah, I do. He couldn’t stop a quick glance over his shoulder though, telling himself that maybe L’ras would just play along with things, even as he knew it wasn’t likely.
