Late Morning
Lan was up late. That is, it was getting on to late morning and he wasn’t in bed. Arc stood with him in the weyrbowl, keeping herself all contained to his shoulder. Lan was glad that he knew a few people here, as it meant that he got to call in a favor now and again. Including getting someone to ferry in his brother. Soon enough, a Midnight appeared from nowhere and started circling down. He recognized the two people on its back, but had to wait until both were safely on the ground before moving toward them.
“Ten! How was the ride?” Ten looked sort of like a younger version of himself, but he was quicker to smile and seemed to be more at ease. When Ten got off the Midnight, it was clear that he matched him in height now.
“Crazy. I don’t know if I wanna go again or leave it to the avians from now on.” The brothers chuckled, and gave each other a punch on the arm. A typical greeting for them. Lan turned back to the Midnight rider before proceeding though.
“Thanks L’nol, I appreciate it.”
“Sure.” The midnight rider gave an amiable wave, before the brothers headed into the dining hall to talk over some food. Once they were settled, they began to talk in earnest.
“So, guard for the Weyr, huh? And I need to meet your Wher.” Ten took a bite out of a roll that was available, while Lan smiled.
“That is true. Hopefully Ethilask likes you, if not, give her a pet and she’ll come around.” He paused and reached up on his shoulder for the ever shy White flitter. “This is Arc though. She’s a cute one.” Ten reached out for the creature, who seem spooked for a minute before melting at the gentle strokes she got.
“You got all the luck. Although, I got a cute one now.” Ten laughed. “Don’t tell her I said that though. You remember Elinsa?”
“Sure. Wait, you and her are…?”
“Yep.”
“Shardit.” The brothers both laughed at that before Lan clapped his hand to his brother’s shoulder. “I kid. Congrats.”
“Let me guess, you aren’t anywhere near a relationship with a girl?”
“I might not stutter quite so much?” Ten snorted.
“No progress at all then. You need to practice. Find someone and talk to them a bunch.”
“I’m sure that conversation would go well.” Lan said somewhat sarcastically.
“Nonsense, we just have to find someone. Let’s see…” Ten sat back in his chair and looked around. Eventually he settled on a woman sitting at a table near the door, who was displaying Harper knots. “Perfect. Come on.”
Lan sighed, but followed Ten as he headed over. At worst, they would have a weird story at the end of this. Which, considering it was a day for the brothers to hang out, wouldn’t exactly be a bad thing. Ten took the lead though.
“Excuse me, Miss, could we perhaps bother you for a moment?” The Harper looked up, quirking up one of her eyebrows. “We are looking for someone to help us with a little problem.”
“Well, take a seat gentlemen.” The woman flourished her hand, indicating the seats unoccupied at the table. Ten took a seat immediately. Lan hesitantly followed. She sat up straighter and smiled. “Now how can I help?”
“My brother has got a problem with stuttering around women. We need someone he can talk to. I figure a Harper would work nice.” Lan tried not to look embarrassed with his brother’s straightforward description of his problem. The Harper looked at him critically before turning back to Ten.
“Okay, but I’m not actually living here.” Ten looked startled then checked her knots again. Sure enough, she had Hold knots, not Weyr. “Although I guess I could try and help while I’m here for now. What’s your name, anyhow?” The harper directed the last question to the silent Wherhandler.
“M-my n-name is Lan.” The sudden question surprised him, so he stuttered more than usual. Ten groaned. The Harper looked at him with interest.
“Well, I’m Kashpa. Have you ever been trained in Harper skills?” Lan shook his head. She considered this. “Then how about I teach you Harper voice? Might get your mind off it, since it requires more focus and training then just talking.” The brothers looked at each other, Ten breaking into a wide smile. Lan let out another sigh. Not at Kashpa, at his brother. But she quirked her eyebrow up anyway. He turned back to her after a second though.
“I w-would like that.”
“Wonderful. You’ll find my rates very affordable.”
“Huh?” The brothers stared at the mischievous grin of the Journeywoman, considering what they had just gotten into.
“Well I am going to be teaching you. Besides, I will probably have to make a fair number of trips from the Hold for ya, mister Wherhandler. I can work around your schedule though.” She took a bite from the bread that had, until then, been ignored.
“Well when you put it that way.” Ten got a frown from Lan, but he brushed it off. Lan just went along with it. As weird as this all was, he did think it would be a fair investment.
“Ok-kay. D-deal.” Lan put out his hand, and Kashpa took it with a smile.
“I look forward to teaching you.”
