After Dark
Velion Residence
Cr’wean slammed the door on his way in. Probably very rude, but his mother was merely looking up from her book with a mild smile. She looked him up and down, noting his red face and refusal to do anything but march off to the kitchen.
“I’m going to borrow your ingredients.” The Lifewing rider’s gruff words got his mother up and moving toward the kitchen, book still in hand.
“That bad?” She marked her place, watching as her son started to get together everything he needed to make cookies.
“I am not going into it.”
“Mm. Was she at least pretty?”
“Mom!” Cr’wean could actually turn redder. Imagine that. The woman laughed heartily and got out a tray to help out with.
“I’m just trying to figure out where I went wrong. She seemed nice enough to me. And watch the counter, you are getting egg all over it.” Cr’wean grumbled while doing so, mixing up batter. If there was one person you couldn’t mess with, it was your mother. Even if he had a fairly embarrassing time on this most recent blind date. “I’ll figure out someone one of these days. Fairly easy to advertise you at least. My accomplished son.” She reached up to ruffle his hair, which didn’t really improve the man’s mood.
“I really wish you could just do this with Cyanee instead. Stupid dragons. She might actually enjoy it you know.” Not that he knew. The last thing he wanted to do was talk love with his sister. A revolting thought indeed.
“Oh hush. I want grandchildren. Get on that. Not that I don’t want a grand-niece or nephew, but I think she’s got bigger things on her mind.” She started to hunt for something to dish batter with as Cr’wean eyed her suspiciously.
“What did she say?”
“Something about a friend of hers.” Cr’wean growled and she returned with a large spoon that she used to rap his forehead with. “Hush boy, your father is sleeping. I don’t need to have to explain why I am taking in stray canines. Besides, I thought you wanted to actually eat cookies?” Cr’wean simmered down to merely actively annoyed.
“That friend of hers has killed someone you know.”
“So I hear. So many people getting killed now-a-days. You should be careful when you run around healing folk. Oh but I forget, you have Kiyosh. Darling creature won’t let you get hurt.” Cr’wean watched his mom hum as she dished out the batter he’d prepared onto the tray. “Anyway, she was wondering what to do about him, so I recommended something. You both need lessons about being sensible sometimes.” She paused and looked at her son critically. “You didn’t growl on your date did you?”
“No.” Cr’wean answered automatically. It was true, while also being the right answer. Never answer that you had, that would be bad. She watched him for a moment before returning to the cookies.
“Hmm. Well I’ll tell you what I told her. At least a little. You shouldn’t forget that everyone changes. For better or for worse. You can’t just let one bad or good experience define your relationship. Got it?” She finished the tray and put it aside, starting on another. Cr’wean raised an eyebrow.
“Is this your way of saying you are setting me up with Isla?”
“Well, yes, but also you should try going on a second date sometime. I will never get anywhere with you if I don’t.” Cr’wean sighed. His mother eyed him and he tried, he really did, to be calm and rational.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Good. Now, so long as we are baking, grab the mother dough off the top shelf. I need bread for tomorrow.” Cr’wean grabbed it and the pair started to make a fresh batch of bread. The Lifewing rider continued to think about everything that had been happening recently, even as he kneaded, sat around, and eventually, ate some cookies.
Things sure were weird around Rainbow Mists. He was beginning to wonder how there could be an attempt on a pregnant woman, two killings and a stolen egg all after the new turn started. He kept wondering.
