The first thing you need to know about Storm Nexus is that we are VERY NON-CANON and INFORMATION-HEAVY. We have comprehensive documentation covering just about every aspect of our particular Pern, and you will need to read through it to understand what's going on; if you're hoping to just skim through the site info and slap down a character, this isn't the game for you.
We are also primarily a sandbox Pern; our plots are mostly member-driven, and our Pern is set up so that there's significantly more room for local cultural variations than on canon Pern. We're not at the point of inventing major Holds wholesale, but roaming groups and smaller Holds are entirely possible.
OUR SYSTEM
-In addition to the usual post-writing, we use diogenessbeast's Multi-Format RP System. Essentially, you can create art, write stories/poetry/etc., and post livechat RP logs, and you'll be credited for your activity. You aren't limited to just RP threads.
-We have a large shop, containing a wide selection of bondables, pets, IC items, and OOC permission tokens. We also have the notoriously addictive Random Bags, where you get a set number of randomized items – items that can even be other Random Bags!
-Running Hatchings is NOT directly tied to having a clutching female character. If you want to run your character's Hatchings, then by all means, you can do so; if you don't, we can just as easily make other arrangements. Similarly, if you want to write for a Hatching and don't have a clutching female, just let the staff know and we'll find a way to include you.
-Our site rules are essentially "don’t be an asshole". Activity requirements are entirely tied to IC rank, and you can have as many characters as your whims and rank availability allow.
OUR WORLD
-Let's start with the dragons, because let's face it: this is Pern, so you'll want to see the dragons. We have six ranks: Queens, Kings, Officers, Knights, Soldiers, and Scouts. These follow the basic framework of the colors found in canon, but there is no correlation between hide color and rank; dragons can be as rainbow (or not) as the players please. In addition, Queens are capable of chewing firestone and flaming, and Kings take a more ceremonial role than Bronzes usually do, with Officers stepping in to fill the gaps. Our whers and fire-lizards use the same rank system.
-We don't do sexuality Impression, and Candidate sex is all but irrelevant; male Queenriders are limited, but exist, and female Kingriders are loosely limited. On Storm Nexus, Impression is all about personality and player/character preference.
-Our Pern has magic. It's best to read the documentation on this for full understanding, but the short version is:
1) Individuals of almost any intelligent species can have inborn magic abilities called Talents; these generally fall into a specific skillset – things such as changing the colors of objects, seeing possible futures, or creating mage-lights – rather than being general all-purpose magic.
2) With time and effort, any intelligent being can learn a Skill; this is essentially the same as a Talent, save that it was deliberately learned rather than being inborn.
3) In general, our magic isn't the flashy "it works because it's magic" Dungeons and Dragons sort; everything functions off of quantum probabilities and unexplained rules of the universe. You don't need to think about it too hard, or come up with scientific backing for any given ability, but keep it in mind when creating characters.
-In addition to humans, our Pern has two other intelligent toolmaker species. Ferali are essentially humanoid animals – including dragon, wher, fire-lizard, and tunnelsnake Ferali, who cannot bond to their equivalent species but are otherwise unrestricted, but not including Ferali of any other Pernese fauna. Therioi are an alien species that possesses an innate, species-wide talent for shapeshifting; their native form is enough of a mishmash to defy description, so here's an image link instead.
-It's not just the humanoids that have additions; we have enough bondable species that we made a spreadsheet to keep track of them all. They range from dragon-strength to flit-strength, and there are shop items that allow players to create their own species.
-Our Pern has a higher martial component than most; we have a Soldiercraft, and while most dragons prefer not to harm humanoids for no reason, they are under no genetic compulsion not to and can even become bandits if their temperament is right.
-Non-dragonrider characters are welcomed; both major Holds in our main Weyr's territory have PCs at them, including the ruling families, and we make an effort to have PC populations of non-dragon bondables.
WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW
Fortune has smiled upon Plateau for the first time in a long while. Indilth’s clutch hatched healthy and strong, though to the sorrow of many the Queen jumped between without finding her bonded. Despite their sadness, there was much feasting to celebrate the twenty-five new Weyrlings to join the ranks of Plateau, though they have many lessons to attend before graduating to join the fighting wings against Thread. Perseverance will serve them well as they learn all they need to know to defend hearth and home against Thread and any who would threaten their friends and families.
With one hatching concluded, another is on the horizon as Minervath takes to the skies in what promises to be a dazzling display. Dragons large and small have risen to chase and anyone could win this test of prowess.
Trouble brews all around, however, and the Weyr would do well to keep on their toes...
