Then change began.
Plague swept through the continent, killing many and sparing few. And while green dragons continued to pick from those offered to them, the trend began that would turn the tide against Red River and ultimately outcast them. Men did not want their daughters, sisters or betrotheds going off to fight a menace that seemed insatiable and left many riders and their mounts dead. While the rank of a Queenrider was still coveted by any holder, a female on a green became to be seen as a promiscuous, unstable woman, a pariah among pariahs.
Red River fought this trend, and welcomed those women greens who were shunned elsewhere. Relationships with other weyrs and with their own tithing holds grew cool, then resentful, and eventually all but one Major hold was lost to Red River, and the small weyr was forced to make due if it wanted to keep its views.
As a result, Red River withdrew from many attempts to strengthen relations and began to accept castaway riders, candidates, crafters and holders, working to sustain itself and uphold their promise to the people to protect them from Thread.
Nearly 50 Turns have passed since the first mutants made their way into Red River's ranks - a source of shame for the rest of Pern it would seem. But some have come around - some by the will of their own open minded tolerance, some through forced alliance. Igen, counted among allies, owes its life to Red River, who came to Igen's aid when a mad queen threatened to raze the Weyr completed. Telgar, bolstered by the mentorship of the largest queen on Pern, Chioneth of Red River, also became a steadfast ally.
But not everyone was pleased with the way tradition was changing.
Fort Weyr, powered by an unbreakable triumvirate of power, sought to expand their hold on Pern - usurp Benden's place as the foremost Weyr in the world. They moved like chess pieces, carefully arranged, until High Reaches, Igen, Telgar, and soon Red River fell under the control of Fortian Queens. Tactical moves, strategic Flights - it seemed like the world was on the verge of totally Fortian control. Until. . . Gold Veyth, Fortian born and bred, made a fatal error. Under her rule lady green riders, lady blue riders, pewters, and rose-golds began to disappear. Bronzes who spoke out against her vanished in a puff of cold arctic air - and it drew Chioneth home from her Telgarian perch but forced her to play Second to a tyrant queen.
A great upheaval followed - Fortian queens expelled from Telgar, from Igen, from Red River - Weyrs unified in the embraced RIGHT to be riders and live with DragonChoice at the forefront of their oaths. It would seem then, peace has settled across the lands. . .
