Late in the night
Shri stifled a yawn. Working for the Aerie flipped between intense focus and utter boredom. Despite the yawn, she was not actually bored. She was keenly aware of the letter in her pocket, waiting to be addressed. Her fair sat before her, slightly on edge. Except Panero, who was trying not to be noticed as he crawled toward the half empty cup of klah. Shri was about to do something about it, but the door opened and she turned along with her firelizards at the noise.
“Evening Shri, I’ve come to save you.” The man chuckled, weirdly cheery for this time of night. He was flanked by two firelizards, an exuberant Purple and a quiet Midnight. This was her relief.
“Thanks. I wish for you a boring shift.” She got up and her firelizards followed, even as the man laughed at that. It was hard managing messages for the Aerie, so boring was honestly the best thing that could happen. Then it meant that no one was in danger.
“Thank you. See you tomorrow.” He waved as she left, he face her normal neutral expression. The moment the door closed behind her, she shifted directions and unconsciously touched the letter in her pocket. Its contents were both exactly what she wanted and a personal pain. She mentally reviewed it again.
Shri.
10 doses of numbweed
5 yards of bandages
1 healers kit
We look forward you paying off your debts swiftly.
Boa
She doubted for a moment the person’s real name was Boa, but she could be surprised. It was her first break. She had been racking up debt for long enough that they now had something over her. So she suspected the next step was to precede to using her. Good.
She stepped to the supply room and stared for a moment. Shri worked utterly alone. Her only companions were her firelizards, who made not a sound. She would be doing this without anyone else knowing the exact reasons why she was stealing from her own Aerie. That she dove in to this life to find the enemy at the end of it all. IT would change nothing if she was caught. So she wouldn’t get caught.
She opened up the door and grabbed the single item that her fair could not carry. She then motioned to her firelizards, who picked up the rest, and then quickly vanished to the agreed on location. She walked alone down the hall with the healer’s kit in hand.
It had begun.
