Afternoon
Meeting Hall
Ice Stone Weyr gathered for an announcement. The riders filled the large room, but even if they had filled it wall to wall, the ceilings stretched high to create the impression the space was open. However, though the dragon riders were all present, they did not fill the room as much as they used to. This was what struck Hedara most as she entered the front of the room. She walled up the raised stage, and the room quieted. Ceir followed after her, both Weyrleaders dressed in what Hedara termed Ice Stone formal clothes. Neither of the women wore dresses or skirts, though the clothes were of fine make. Swords were at their sides, but it was the peace bound ornamental sort. They were a Weyr of warriors, more so then any other, and even now they reflected it. Hedara stepped forward, eyes sweeping the assembled briefly before beginning.
“We have gathered here to address a problem. Though we are a small Weyr, we must have ample leadership. We have done well in War, but we can do better. So we have agreed to promote another Weyrleader from among us.” Hedara naturally paused, and some whispering could be heard echoing through the hall. Her stance firm, she raised her voice again, not faltering in her words. “Many have distinguished themselves in our battles, but among those, none have been able to match the hard work and leadership of our choice. We ask you to welcome W’nal of Aurora Selnath.”
The room applauded as W’nal entered. He was a well-liked man, and according to Temperanth, Selnath was a charming dragoness as well. Hedara even approved of him, his actions during the war had made him a hero, and so it appeared no one in the room would complain on the choice to make him another Weyrleader. He walked to Hedara and Ceir and Hedara took a step to allow W’nal to speak. The room quieted.
“I thank you all for this opportunity to be here and swear to work hard for you all. Well, harder.” There were a few chuckles and W’nal let the brief statement speak for him.
As Ceir closed out the meeting Hedara watched the room. She hoped this would work well. The problem was, as always, the forces outside of the Weyr. As much as those inside this room understood the choice, and supported it, she could only imagine how others would see it. They would just see a man who rode neither Queen nor King.
Those sorts would also conveniently forget their Weyr was founded by such a person.
