Location:
Located 75 klicks north of Drake's Lake. The Weyr is surrounded by dense jungle except for the wide road that leads to the Weyr's only ground entrance.
History:
One hundrend and fifty Turns in the past, there was a terrible catastrophy. An earthquake shook the mountains of High Reaches Weyr. An evacuation was called immediately and nearly everyone made it out alive. The Senior Weyrwoman, with her golden Queen and her clutch of 21 eggs, were killed during a cave in of the Hatching Grounds. The Weyrwoman and her Queen suffocated and the eggs where smashed by falling rocks. A rescue was attempted but it came too late. The deaths were honored by tradition. They were taken between by the Weyrleader of High Reaches. Though he and his bronze never came back out of between.
The site of High Reaches Weyr had been demolished by the quake. The other Weyrs took in as many as they could. There was talk of finding another location to house the Riders and folk of High Reaches. But nothing was done for a few turns.
Twenty turns passed to be precise. A lone Greenrider from Fort Weyr made the discovery of an abandoned volcano. She quickly scouted around and took notes of things that would be good about the location and things that would be bad about the location. She took her observations back to Fort and made her discovery known to her Weyrleaders. Conclave was called and every Weyrleader from the other Weyrs attended. It was decided to open a new Weyr in the South. Then they argued about who to send of their Goldriders to see to the new Weyr.
Fort wanted that gold pair to go. Igen wanted this gold pair to go. But in the end, the Goldrider selected to go was the one remaining High Reaches Goldrider and Queen. It was Naroa and her gold Ashrilth. And it was made known that anyone could go with her to the new Weyr. But out of all of the Queens, only Naroa was going. Once her gold had her first mating flight there to establish the Weyr's Leadership, more golds would be sent to help. Naroa refused the last bit. Only she would be Weyrwoman. She would only have any goldriders of her gold as her seconds. Her Queen was the last pure blood High Reaches Queen. And she wanted to keep it that way to honor her lost home and their lost Weyrwoman and Weyrleader. So, the Conclave agreed and told her only until she had at least two more golds from her beloved Queen. But if her gold didn't lay two gold eggs within the next ten turns, they would send their own. Finally, Naroa agreed to the terms. When she arrived, Naroa named the new Weyr after herself.
Over the next ten turns, though. Ashrilth did not clutch any gold eggs. Not a one. And then a few days after one of Ashrilth's semi-large clutches had hatched, a new goldrider and her Queen arrived. Naroa was not happy, but what could they do? They accepted the goldrider with open arms. And for five turns, everything seemed to be as it should. The Weyr was growing and prospering. Though Ashrilth had yet to lay a gold egg. Rumors were spreading that Ashrilth would never lay a gold egg. Though, the new gold, Lepanath, hadn't clutched one either.
A turn later, Ashrilth rose and was caught by a bronze. No shock there! While Ashrilth was with eggs, something happened. No one knew that the bronze had been carrying a virus. A virus that altered DNA in a dragon's genetic code that seems to only affect the dragon's color. One nice cool day, Ashrilth's clutch hatched and there was a shock to everyone. There were the normal colors, and some new colors of hatchlings! Rumors began to spread, but no one could figure out what happened. The truth remained elusive for six Turns. Until a recrod was found at the original landing sight where human's had first colonized Pern. The record explained that some time shortly after the first dragons had hatched and the first Queen had been flown and clutched, the dragons that had hatched from those eggs had different colors.
The new colors were readily accepted, though a small band of miscreants did not want the new colors and wanted them gone. Ever since then, there has been struggles between everyone all over Pern about the new dragon colors. But only Naroa Weyr has the new colors and accepts the colors readily.
One hundred and nine turns later, Naroa Weyr is still going strong with a large Hold. With also a Vintner's Hall and their own Healer Hall. There is a rumor that another Hold is lurking about in the Weyr's territory, but no one can seem to find it. The Weyrleadership changed four times before arriving at the present. And a new Goldrider pair awaits the ultimate change in their lives. The Weyr waits for the young Medilath's first mating flight to determine the next Weyrleader. Medilath's rider, Xoslyn, has mixed emotions about the flight. Though she is saddened by the death of her mentor, Parify and her gold Bireth.
