More than 1000 Turns ago, Xanadu Weyr was created. It was the perfect setting for a weyr, the perfect place, with the perfect riders. The seventh weyr was the result of lnog Turns of hard work, but it was worth it. With Xanadu Weyr, Pern flourished for 600 Turns.
Then came the Dust. A meteor barely missed Pern, but it passed close enough for a chunk of it to break off and blaze a course towards Pern. It never made it past the inner atmosphere, but for Turns afterward, dust particles, simply called Dust, drifted down from space, the meteor's revenge for being burned away. They settled on everything. The Dust turned out to contain a virus. The virus took at least 100 turns to have any effect, not showing up until Telgar Weyr's queen, Tohenath, clutched.
The clutch contained 49 eggs, a shocking event in itself. It contained three gold eggs as well, another surprising factor.
But that turned out to be the least of the surprises this clutch would give Pern.
The three gold eggs hatched one golden queen. Out of the other two Queen shells came a purple colored dragon that became known as a Violet dragon, more of a reddish blend than of a purple, and a pretty Crimson dragonet. These dragons started a revolution, and the only thing that could explain the new colors was Dust.
From these oddly-colored queens hatched more strange colors. Onyx, Amethyst, and Copper dragons emerged, seeming to have the same qualities as bronzes. Another female dragon came to be: Brass. These did clutch. Teal and then the later arrivals in later clutches, Ash, emerged as merely female dragons. Teal and Ash were considered Queens, and Coppers equivalent to Browns.
These colors flourished, and soon the weyr was renamed Darwin's Weyr, after the man who named and recorded each new color. Over time, more colors appeared, Topaz, Opal, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Cream, and Pearl. Some of them clutched and others didn't, and a few were males or females, or strictly males or strictly females. In the next two Turns, Thread is going to return.
Will they survive? Will they herald a new chapter in Pern's uncertain future?
