Enetta sat on the ground in the Weyrbowl, watching the bustling that went on around her. It was interesting, sometimes, to see what all was happening. She was social, but she did appreciate her time alone quite a bit.
Her eyes were half-lidded as she daydreamed. She was something of a mystery to those around her because, although she did not hesitate to talk to her have a conversation with people, she did not often tell them about herself. It was just a fact of who she was.
She hummed softly, leaning back on her hands. She was out of the way enough that she could easily go unnoticed. She watched and took note of each person that walked by. She knew most everyone in the Weyr to some degree. She wouldn't be surprised if someone, anyone, who lived here approached her at any moment if they happened to see her, but most people were absorbed in other things about this time of day. She rather liked it. It gave her time to herself quite easily.
She hummed softly and considered going to find her grandmother or grandfather, Zara or F'dar. She loved talking to them. She knew her mother was busy at this point. She and her family still saw quite a bit of each other at this point. She wondered where N'rim was. She hoped that he and Lakrinth were getting along and doing well today. N'rim was withdrawn and seemed rather downcast... Unlike herself and her other siblings.
A couple of moments, Enetta stood and dusted herself off. Hmm... What was it she wished to do. She supposed... she could always do chores... That was something.
Makaleu hummed idly to herself as she walked toward the Weyrbowl. The sun was high in the sky and she was looking for potential friends. The sun was high in the sky so it meant it was time for her to be outside. What was more it was just after midday so her dad’s brown flitter was following her. Beat was wonderful company while she settled in, though it was a shame she did not have a letter ready for him yet. She had no shortage of letters to write and it was on her mind. For the moment, all she really cared about was enjoying the day at the Weyr with Beat.
She reached the edge of the Bowl and smiled crookedly down at it. There was always a bustle around here, and she was going to capitalize on it. She paused for a moment to watch the dragons flying around, admiring the colors. Mau never considered herself particularly knowledgeable on dragons, but she would do her best to learn. Honestly, she was better at making tools then learning facts. It was still a wonder to watch the different colors fly about. She pried her eyes from the sky and focused on those whose feet were on the ground. There were a few people just milling about or passing through, but who caught her eye was someone near the edges of the Bowl. Good enough place to start making friends. She started trotting over, Beat amiably cruising behind her.
“Hello there!” Mau’s voice was naturally a touch high, and audibly friendly. She waved to the fellow candidate she had spotted as she closed in, a spring in her step. She was still smiling as she stopped, her eyes bright. “Looks like you already found the best spot around here.” She noticed it was both in the Bowl proper and out of the way, a very nice spot. “Sorry if I’m bugging you, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m Makaleu, and my friends call me Mau.” She held her hand out for a handshake, not flinching as Beat found himself a nice spot on her shoulder to sit on. The brown could be lazy at times, but was friendly as well.
Enetta looked up at the girls approached and smiled, standing and dusting herself off. "Good afternoon." Her voice was calm but friendly with a very smooth tone to it. Enetta gave her a somewhat crooked grin. "I'm not sure its the best spot... but It is a pretty good one. I really can't take credit for finding it, though. Well met, Mau. My name is Enetta."
Enetta blinked as Beat took up a perch on Mau's shoulder. He reminded her of her grandmother's flitter, Myrrion. He was a lazy and somewhat cranky Brown now. But, according to Zara, he had been for a quite some time now. Both her grandparents had flitters. Zara had Myrrion and a Dream named Vividian and her grandfather, F'dar, had three Greens, Pip, Pep, and Pop. They could be a handful at times. Even now. Enetta wasn't sure what else to say. She supposed she would let Mau ask the next question.
Enetta didn't correct Mau about the fact that she had been here since she was a baby or anything of the sort. It wasn't as if it were anything critical. Enetta smiled in a friendly way.
Mau was glad when her introduction went over well. She had hoped that she had not been a bother to the other candidate. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance Anetta.” She spotted Anetta’s glance at Beat and gestured to the brown flitter. “Oh, sorry, this is Beat. He is my father’s firelizard, but he is hanging around with me today.” Beat looked at Anetta and chirped once greeting and settled back against Mau. Beat had long since been used to being around new people, as his owner was always moving. It was harder to get him to move once he had settled down though.
“So, are you very familiar with the Weyr? Oh! And you said that someone had told you about this spot, who was it?” Mau paused for a moment, realizing she had just asked two presumably unrelated questions. “Oh, sorry about that, I can ramble sometimes.” She smiled quietly, looking at the ground. Beat bumped a head against the girl’s cheek as punishment then settled back. Mau chuckled at the brown and gave him a pat. She returned her gaze to Anetta.
Enetta smiled at the flitter. "Well, it is good to meet you too, Beat," she said amiably, giving the little flitter an inclination of her head, mostly for the humor factor of it. Or, at least what she saw as something humorous.
Enetta chuckled. "Don't worry about it. Well, for your first question, you could say that I am extremely familiar with the Weyr. My grandmother showed me this spot. She used to sit here with her Illyrmiath and sometimes grandpa and his Cilerth. Hey. Don't worry about it. I don't mind, if you're being too fast or rambling too much, I'll let you know." She smiled again. "So how long have you been at RMW?"
Mau grinned at Enetta’s first response. “How cool. Are your parents riders too or just your grandparents?” She did not recognize the names of the dragons but then again she had lived in holds all her life. If they had not been watchriders she would have no way of knowing who they were.
“Me? Just two days. It has been fun though. I always love settling into a new place.” She loved settling in, but she hated leaving people behind. It was part of the reason she sent so many people letters. It reminded her that she could still be friends with people who were not standing right next to her. Not that she could stand not having some friends right next to her.
Enetta smiled. "My parents are Riders. My mom is a Purple Rider and my dad is a Black Rider." She scratched the back of her head awkwardly. Most people just found that out by experience, she wasn't one to just tell people things most of the time.
She smiled. "Well that's good. Makes moving easier. But, I bet you miss the people you left behind. I bet you keep in touch with them, though." She was just inferring that from some of the facts she had picked up, including Beat being here and the fact that he actually belonged to Mau's dad.
“That’s cool! Are you hoping to be a purple or black rider like them? Or are you hoping for something else?” Mau could visualize black and purple dragons easily, but was fairly vague on the personalities of those dragons. She kinda thought that black dragons might be withdrawn, but that was based on her preconceptions, and for all she knew they could be hyper or something. Since she did not know much outside of the fact that golds were queens and that browns and blues were good fighters, it meant she put all dragons into the category of ‘cool but mysterious’.
“Right on both counts. Beat here is a great messenger and he always seems to get snacks for his deliveries. Which is good for him since I got a lot of people to sent letters to.” Mau stroked the little brown’s head for good measure, making the flitter croon softly. “It’s really fun, and it is interesting to hear about what is going on in all the holds.” The girl’s face seemed to light up when she talked about her hold friends, and her crooked smile came out again.
Enetta chuckled a little at Mau's enthusiasm. "I don't know, really. All colors have their merits and each dragon is generally an individual. Every pair is unique to another, even if it is a pair of the same color." She had learned a lot over her time in the Holds, but there were always some things that could not be fully explained even by the most experienced and knowledgeable Riders had all the answers.
Enetta grinned. " Well, for a flitter, snacks are good payment for a job." Enetta thought for a moment. "You really love your friends and family. It must be difficult to be away from them, even when you enjoy experiencing knew places. But... Keeping in touch with them is a very good thing." Enetta gave her a friendly and caring smile. She, herself, had never been away from the Weyr. This had been her home since the day she had been born... But her older sister... She had left almost a Turn ago after not Impressing every time she stood. Enetta would hear from her every now and then... Usually from one of her sister's flitters... but... It was becoming more and mroe infrequent that she would send a message at all...
Mau listened carefully to this new insight on dragons and their riders and took it very seriously. It seemed to indicate that if she befriended riders that she would have a lot of different sorts of friends. That idea was perfect to her. “Sounds like you are just hoping for a dragon that fits. Which seems brilliant to me.” Mau figured she would learn about the different colors eventually, but it would take time. Of course, all of the best things did.
Mau chuckled a little and said, “Oh they are but one too many deliveries and a lazy brown gets too lazy.” Beat chirped in opposition to this idea, starting to sulk a little. “Oh come on Beat, you get plenty of snacks.” She rubbed under his chin, one of his favorite places for scritches. He quickly melted into a little puddle of brown draped over her shoulder. “Yeah, it is pretty much like you said. I’m fairly used to it though. My parents always seemed to move every two turns or something. Who knows, I might end up staying here longer then anywhere else I’ve been before.” Mau did not think she inherited her parents’ desire to roam, but she had not really had a choice in the matter. She had kinda wondered how she would feel when she could decide that sort of thing for herself.
Enetta smiled. "It is often much better just to hope for your best fit than to hope for a particular color. Although, I think it is incredibly rare for anyone to be disappointed when they Impress." Enetta scratched the back of her head thinking for a moment. "Riders are great people to make friends with. Gotta be kinda careful about some, though... Others are fine. Depends on the person. You can learn a lot from them."
"It seems he disagrees," Enetta giggled a little bit as the little brown protested. "Do you think you'd like it? To stay in one place for a longer amount of time?" Enetta was quiet for a moment. "Moving around so much must not be easy for you to do all the time... Becoming friends with people and leaving them..."
Enetta was quiet for a moment, her thoughts again wandering to Netta. She wondered if she would send a letter soon... Or visit. And if she did, if she would bring flitter eggs with her. She was sure, though, that she wouldn't come until there was a celebration. She would never coem for a hatching. Enetta knew that. Her sister couldn't stand to be around a dragon Hatching anymore... Enetta didn't fully understand, but she did know her sister was deeply bitter over never Impressing.
“Makes sense. I mean, the people who stand are excited to impress. I kinda imagine that getting a dragon to pick you as their best friend is amazing enough. I mean, I don’t think anyone would wish for something different once they got it. Maybe people have an idea of what they think they want though. Who knows?” Mau grinned a little wider and added, “This is getting me excited.” A couple more days and she would mellow out a bit, but for now everything was still new and exciting here, and this talk was just getting her pumped up.
Mau looked a little quizzical when Enetta mentioned to be careful of some riders. Maybe she just meant to make sure she didn’t bother some of the more anti-social riders? That or she had a particular person in mind? She did not quite know, but just nodded to the entire statement. She would be careful and she certainly agreed with the part about learning a lot from them.
The lop-sided smile was a little quieter as she responded to the next question. “Who knows? I figure I’ll just find out for myself. Might take a while though.” Her eyes wandered to the dragons flying about, in and out of the bowl. She tilted her head and spotted a lifewing on the edge of the bowl, but it was soon out of sight. “I think even if I get an itchy foot it will be a long while before I get my fill of being in a Weyr.” She turned back to Enetta, giving her full attention again.
“Is something up?” The other girl seemed to be thinking hard about something, and it had Mau curious. “Not that it’s any of my business; I mean you don’t have to answer.” She rubbed the back of her head, a touch embarrassed. “But if you wanna talk about it, I can listen.” Some people didn’t like letting her know what they were thinking about, so she didn’t get offended about that. Besides, she had just met Enetta, so she understood if she was not comfortable talking, especially if it was a big thing.
"A lot of people do. But, generally speaking, the worst are queen and king seekers. They are the most common ones you get who think they know what they want and what they need. They don't normally Impress kings or queens, though... I have heard of maybe one Queen seeker being bitter about Impressing a non-Queen before... but it's uncommon." Enetta shrugged. She couldn't help but smile, though, at Mau's excitement. "It most definitely will be."
Enetta didn't really explain what she meant by being careful of some Riders. But, she was sure that if Mau wanted to be her friend and they were around each other enough, Enetta could teach her what she meant as they went.
"I really can't speak for the merits of a Hold, but I think you will come to love being at the Weyr. There are a lot of people coming and going all the time and there is always some kind of excitement or interest. There is rarely a dull day."
Enetta was brought back from her thoughts by Mau's question. "It's alright. I was just thinking about my sister is all. I haven't heard from her or seen her in about a half Turn now..." She sighed. She rather missed Netta.
From Enetta’s words it seemed that Mau just didn’t know enough about candidates. Other candidates then her anyway. “Well, I suppose I can see why that would be. Not that I think they should be mad after it is all said and done. But hey, what do I know? I’m better at making a hammer then dealing with the complex motivations around a hatching, apparently.” She got a sheepish grin, glancing at the various dragons going in and out of the bowl again. She spotted a large dragon that was completely red. It seemed a little agitated about something, considering how fast its tail was whipping about. She wondered about that for half a second then returned her glance to the other candidate.
“Well that’s good. As long as there is plenty to do, it should stay interesting. What do you like doing around the Weyr? When you aren’t doing chores or actually work I mean.” Mau was still giving the brown a scratch under his chin, and he was still a puddle of firelizard on her shoulder. He started to croon softly, very pleased indeed.
“Oh, I see.” Mau’s smile changed into a flat line while she thought about it seriously. She herself did not have a sibling, but she understood the sentiment. She could not think of any relevant advice so she just put a hand on Enetta’s shoulder and gave a reassuring smile.
Enetta grinned. "I wouldn't say that. Everyone's different. I've just stood in a few Hatchings and seen such things firsthand is all..." Enetta shrugged. She followed Mau's gaze. "That's a Crimson King. They are extremely hotheaded and, often times, so is their Rider. Wanna be careful around 'em."
"Well... I, personally, spend a lot of time with my parents and grandparents. Often learning... Or learning from anyone else I can. And, just as often, with friends. I usually manage, somehow, to bring them along without meaning to." She couldn't help but think that the little Brown was adorable, though she didn't say so.
"Thanks..." Enetta said with a small smile. "Hey... Do you want to meet my grandmother? She usually isn't busy this time of day..."
