The end was in sight. A thirty worker looked up and wiped his brow. Soon the Master Mason would call for a break and he could get some water. Leaving sooner would make him look weak. So he continued laying down the carefully crafted stones into the soft earth. This project had kept his family and so many others fed and happy for the past four months. The Lord had decided on the orders all in a hurry and then a mass of men flooded into the area. He had never seen a project go together so fast. Yet he hoped that his hard work would stand out amongst the others and land him a better job in the building world.
"Break!" The word was a relief on his ears. But he would finish the task at hand first. He finished laying the stone carefully into the ground, placed so close to the other stones and with a bit of seal in between them to make the road smoother. This was the top in new craft technique he'd been told. Tested up in the north at other major port towns. Cliff Side had been booming and thriving lately from the good crop Turn and the Lord was putting the money into this road. Uniting the Riders and Crafters and all folk, he carried on about. As long as it puts food on the table, he can say whatever he wants.
The worker got up and found his water cup and went to wait in the line in front of the huge barrel that carried the drinking water.
He glanced toward the Weyr and saw a small crowd was gathering on the heights and the edges of the grand place where dragons dwelt. Maybe with this road finished he'd see more of them, or with better luck he'd have a new huge job to go do somewhere else. That would suit him better. Best...if someone from up there brought him a real drink. Maybe that evening, if he was lucky.
